A try from man-of-the-match Vereniki Goneva set Leicester on their way to a 21-9 victory over Exeter Chiefs at Sandy Park on Sunday.

The first half was controlled by the Tigers and they took a 15-0 lead at the interval through Ben Youngs and Goneva tries, while Toby Flood added five points from the boot.

Gareth Steenson's three penalties gave the Chiefs hope in the second period, but two further Flood three-pointers eased the visitors to victory.

Both teams went into the game with two wins from three but it was Leicester, who have yet to hit their stride, that started the brighter.

Niall Morris went close after four minutes, knocking on over the line, before the pressure eventually told and Youngs scampered across the whitewash.

Flood then extended the lead with a penalty, his first success of the afternoon after the previous two attempts had drifted wide.

It was proving to be all too comfortable for the visitors with the Chiefs proving to be unusually inaccurate in both the loose and the tight.

And another mistake allowed Goneva to intercept and run 50 metres for a simple score.

The Tigers' fly-half was on target with the conversion and they led 15-0 at the break.

However, Exeter responded well in the early part of the second period and a Steenson three-pointer reduced the deficit to 12 points.

Successive kicks from the tee then got the hosts to within losing bonus-point territory before Flood restored Leicester's control on proceedings with one of his own.

But, with seven minutes to go, the visiting stand-off secured the win with a third penalty.
