Have to agree with the majority of posters here.Exeter do have players worth a look and that are in form .Johnson -Scrysbrook-Thomas and ;perhaps they will tour espically as the U20s JRWC is also this year and i think most of the youngsters should go to that this year ,.There is alot of good young talant atm that i would like to see picked for the England set up ( inc Saxons)in the next few years like Vunipolo trhe Wasps 8-Walker the U20s SH -Hooper-Wade ect ect .Exciting times if your a England fan and im glad i havent got SLs decisions lol

I agree with you on the 12 trees front i really do believe he is the future of england inside centre play, i think that starting for england would have been to soon for him this season and barrit was the right choice. Billy was right to move to Glos as well.... at Leicester he may get more trophies but he would be swapped around every game and be on the bench putting his international chances at risk. At gloucester he will get game time week in and out at 12 and can become the new will greenwood with a better kicking boot !

I think Tom Johnson more than merits a call up, he's been the form back row in the premiership for a while. I'd like to see Hanks and Jess get a call up, because their workrate is outstanding. The only query I would have about Haydn Thomas going is that, as mentioned before, he isn't the biggest, and can't help but feel if you got a du Plessis, Spies or Bekker running at him he may end up a little bit broken.

I still don't see why 12trees isn't playing 12 for england? He's big enough, fast enough, plays alongside tuilagi and has the skills to set the england backline alight and yet he's still overlooked for the solid (but not brilliant) Barritt...anyway as far as Exeter goes it's easy for Baxter to overlook their slightly 'false' position (not to detract from their hard work but) as they didn't lose any england qualified players during the WC or 6 nations teams like Leicester, Saracens and Northampton have been held back drastically by their results during these periods...I know for a fact the saints wouldn't have lost a game at home all season had our players not been away or part of a growing injury list...

Its a twofold problem - a team going well reflects on all the players a team going badly reflects the same way, Lancaster has to see through that as much as possible and select on individual form.
The problem though is always how you can replace a player who is filling the jersey well with one who might. I think that we will see the whole available EPS backfilled with Saxons (isn't that what the systems for after all).
I presume that there will be a Churchill cup squad this summer, so expect to see a few new faces in that line-up.

If Exeter players are playing well, then yes they should be considered for the tour to SA of course, but that sentiment should be no different to any other club in the Premiership.
The tricky situation but also nice headache you have on selection is that you have a lot of inform players to choose from who have not had a chance or have not had enough time on the pitch. There have been calls from prior the WC to see 12Trees get a shot, Trinder should be in the starting mid week team, Jordan Turner Hall was almost there or there about's as was his Quins team mate Brown, would it be too bigger task for George Ford to tour given his age etc. Thats just the backs.
One thing is for sure, this will be a great tour for each player that gets selected, and the mid weak games will be just as beneficial as the tests against SA in blooding new players and seeing what combinations click.

Okay, being practical, we need more depth in the second row (traditional enforcer locks rather than the athletic types that we currently have coming out of our ears) , hooker obviously, and at the present at least the back row thanks to all the injuries! as far as the backs go, we are still looking for that real star inside centre. does exeter have any candiates that can contribute in those areas?

Regardless of if he should have said it, Baxter certainly has a point. Johnson's workrate has made him a form backrow since Exeter were promoted. I also think Haydon Thomas is a world class scrum half, as he consistently gets quick ball away even when his forwards are under pressure which is something very little scrum halves can do (even Dickson). He also scores tries and makes alot of breaks.

@ lawynd - no, it's not that different, I suppose (ouch!). But the difference is that he's asking his players to be picked on merit, rather than past form.
Maybe what this is highlighting is the lack of a suitable conduit for coaches, DoRs and managers to bring their stars to the attention of the EPS. The sort of system where they can say, "You really need to have a look at this chap, he's brilliant!".
SL and his "eyes" can't see every EQP in every match up and down the country, so perhaps there does need to be a better, more formal, system to attract the attention.
Was I over-critical before? Perhaps. But I still think the fundemental difference is that Baxter's asking them to consider his in-form players on form, rather than reputation and past glories. Where-as O'C was, I felt, demanding that his out of form players were in the squad and starting - getting England to play them back into form.
I also happen to agree that there are some great players down at Sandy Park and some should be on the plane. If not for the 3 Tests, then at least for the mid-week and touring experience.

This is completley different to the o'connor comments, this is a coach saying his players deserve recognition but he's doing it in a polite way, every year each coach promotes their best players for higher honours because players getting into the england team makes the club more attractive therefore players are more likely to stay and move to the club if they have a good chance of getting into the england squad...also the players salaries will be supplemented by the RFU meaning they can hold onto the star performers without shelling out as much. O'connor was calling lancaster an idiot and saying its an outrage that out of form youngs and unfit flood don't walk staright back into the starting team...these comments should have been kept to himself.

This reminded me of a bit of discussion we had APV1, regarding appropriate or not comments by coaches towards the England setup. Whilst I acknowledge that Baxter isn't being as negative as O'Connor was (re. Flood and Youngs), ultimately is this any different? I actually agree with Baxter and, given the paucity of options at 8 in particular and with Croft and Wood out, I certainly think Tom Johnson should be on the plane. But how does this sit with you in relation to comments which are possibly unhelpful towards the England setup?
