Ignacio Mieres Exeter Chiefs 2011

All the points: Ignacio Mieres

Exeter Chiefs jumped up to third in the Aviva Premiership on Saturday after claiming a hard-fought 15-9 win over Worcester at Sandy Park.

After a seven year wait, these two teams renewed their rivalry in the league, with Exeter eventually coming out on top, mainly thanks to Ignacio Mieres' boot.

It was very much a game of ping-pong early on, as both sides looked to find gaps in the opening few minutes.

Exeter took the lead after just four minutes though, when a penalty from Mieres gave them a three point advantage.

The lead didn't last long however, as Worcester responded in similar fashion a few minutes later, a Joe Carlisle placed kick drawing them level.

The game was then held up when Worcester's Matt Kvesic made way with a nasty-looking ankle injury midway through the half. When play resumed, Exeter came desperately close to scoring a try, only to be held up on the Worcester line.

Scoring was certainly at a premium, but the game was becoming more edgy by the minute, with some hefty hits going in from both sides.

Worcester created the first half's best chance of a try just before the half hour mark, when Marcel Garvey steamed through the Exeter defence, but he dropped the ball five metres out.

Both sides traded penalties approaching half time, but Exeter took a three point lead into the break, when Mieres added a third penalty, 9-6 at the interval.

The second half started as the first ended, with both sides playing the ball at pace, but both defences were coping admirably.

Exeter did stretch their lead to six points soon after the restart though, when Mieres added yet another penalty.

With fifteen minutes to play, Mieres landed his fifth penalty before being substituted, with Exeter now in the driving seat.

Andy Goode scored a late penalty for Worcester to give them a bonus losing point, but Exeter were comfortable enough winners in the end.
