@ Headhunter99 - I thought it might raise a wry smile. I'm not sure that the author was being "tongue-in-cheek", which is probably a little sophistcated for many of our American cousins...

I think Gatland will be highly thought of if his success with wales continues, another grandslam combined with another six nations championship or a world cup final or a successful lions tour will probably all be enough to get him the job. Good luck recovering Basson, you're the few trully exciting bulls players in recent years.

@APV1 - An interesting comparison of Rugby and HR...

I het the impression this was aimed in my direction.....most HR managers I come into contact with have the non de plume of sales prevention offices ....

In Rugby we have laws , HR have a common policy of non action.

In Rugby we embrace all shapes, sizes, gender and race...always have.. HR call that diversity

In Rugby we toil for victory but accept defeat and the decisions that go against you.

In HR they see that as grounds for an industrial tribunal.

Good tongue in cheek article..

Gatland - 2015? Maybe, but probably not. A Lions series win in OZ will keep his name in the hat when/if the ABs job is shopped in the near future. But, have to agree with @2eyedkiwi and @the_mai, too many quality coaches honing their professional skills in NZ at the moment.

The banter surrounding rugby is one of life's true pleasures and no-one wants to see that disappear. It's up there with sledging in cricket as one of the great forms of entertainment (please, my Saffa chums, don't mention Amla - it's all a bit raw today). But I agree that the "heckling" is now starting to get out of hand and the insults need to stop.

A couple of fond memories:

We were once playing a touring team from a NZ College, who were just brilliant. We knew we were in for a hiding, but that's just what you have to prepare for sometimes. In response to their rather ferocious Haka, we decided to line up on the half-way line and perform a resounding and energetic "Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes." Ferocious it wasn't, but it did cause great merriment amongst the players and supporters alike. And we lost. By a lot.

I also remembering going to Twickenham to see the Baa-Baas versus Australia many years ago. The chap in front of me, in response to a particularly good piece of Aussie play, shouted, "Bloody Australians! Decendants of criminals and rabbits, the lot of them!", much the the amusement of all those within earshot - including a very boisterous gaggle of Aussies.

Throwing things at players. Attacking refs. Players surrounding refs to complain about decisions. Booing opposition. Not standing for the opposition's national Anthem. Not acceptable.

Let's get the pride and respect back into the support and if any of your mates act like this, tell them to wind their damned necks in.

I hope Basson recovers fully and quickly and isn't it great that he's got the support from so many? This is the behaviour that exemplifies our great sport, so let's share the philosophies and be proud of them.

An interesting HR Blog on the subject:

Gatland 2015 - he'll face some good competition by then from the latest crop of Super coaches - Joseph, Hammett, Kirwan, Rennie will either have proven themselves, moved to UK/Euro (or burned out) by then.

Just my opinion and I don't speak for all NZ (!) I don't feel he has respect in the country, he's been targeted by media often enough for his after-match losing complaints while at Wales (and he's had a few) people tend to remember these.

None of the aforementioned 'half-backs who moonlight as fly-half's' quite reach the heights set by Jon Preston for the All Blacks in the second test against the Springboks in 1996. Parra's showing at the World Cup was average at best and Genia is no fly-half.

In terms of moving a 9 to 10... didn't Steven Larkham, one of the best 10s ever (and this coming from an Kiwi) start his career as a 9... kicking about in club rugby before moving to 10 and discovering that he was actually brilliant?

i.e. It's not just a recent thing...

Just out of interest how often is the ball at the back of a ruck for more than 5 seconds anyway? I imagine the ref will have to announce that the ball is available (in the same way he must tell the scrum half to "use it" in a maul) so I honestly can't see there being that much of an issue, unless as described the Scrum Half doesn't get there in time. I imagine we'll see a lot more pick ups from the base.

"Gatland is highly thought of by all in NZ"? Ahhhh, no. Firstly, note, I am Waikato man through and through and spent many years watching Gatland, Mitchell, Monkley, Foster, Purvis, Lowe, the Gordons, etc through their prime in the 90's. But Gatland has always had a rather large chip on his shoulder as a player, and as a coach. He never made it as an All Black, thanks to Fitzpatrick and Hewitt, and has already been snubbed as an AB coach of which he has already tried to line himself up for. "Thought of"? Yes. "Thought highly of by all"? Not really...
