Well justice for all, you didn't have me fooled although I was curious as to what kind of educated soul would use erudite and fat arse on the same sheet. As for Kaplan it's all water under the bridge, he's getting on and gone to pastures new. As for my complaints about French refereeing, they will continue. That gentle little man Mr Cudmore was up to his old tricks again last weekend, result nothing. I fear in any other rugby nation he would be on the permanently banned list by now but not in France, I've seen punches, shoulder charges, brawls, kicks to the head, yet there he is still sucking a lolly enjoying himself. Just study the appointments one day, they have guys refereeing top 14 you wouldn't let near the average county colts game. Have fun

@ Carpelone - fair enough and point taken. But there was a distict lack of humour and banter in the tone of her post. If her tongue was in her cheek, it wasn't apparent.
maria14 - if you were just trying a bit of banter, I'm sorry for over-reacting. If you're a troll spouting nonsense, then you deserve all you get.

Tee hee justice4all, didn't know you were racist as well. What only 59, so I can give you five years at least. Sad to say i only played for 50 yearsand refereed for 15 as the old body started falling apart, broken neck, broken arms snapped achiles you know what I mean, there comes a point when you just have to pack it in. Oh I did coach as well. But frankly my arse is quite slim, I prefer to watch a game live than sit on a chair watching in the warmth of my luxury abode. So this Saturday I expect to be standing on the touch line watching my son play. He's getting on a bit too, but I did have the pleasure of playing with him. Sorry mate I don't like Kaplan, like Joubert, don't like Rolland or Clancy for that matter, but I see no reason not to air my opinions. I think I've earned it. Now take one of those blood pressure pills and calm down old son, its only a game. Anyway who the hell said I was French !!!!!

I do not think she knows exactly how to use poms and pommies and so on. I agree that the way she used those terms sounded derogatory, but French use these without too much malice. I guess they do not get upset if you call them frogs.

@ maria14 - "tipical male [sic]"; "poms", "pommys" - any other prejudices you'd like to share? You start using these terms and you're going to get people's heckles up and deserve people to react. I also didn't suggest that your "nonsense is out of line", I said it was ill-informed. I say that because anyone who thinks that CS's knock-on was worse than WF's is, in my opinion, wrong. Have a look at the footage:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_RsNHauXrM&feature=related
Fofana (see 47:37 on the match clock) leaps into the air and knocks on. He is penalised for a deliberate knock-on and we get a 3 pointer. Sharples (see 52:38 on the match clock) tries to scoop the ball and knocks on. He is penalised for a deliberate knock-on and given 10 minutes in the bin and the French kick into touch for the attacking lineout. I don't think either were deliberate, but that's not my issue. My issue is the inconsistency. Sharples wasn't even in our half (or only just, as it was around the 1/2 way line), so why the yellow card for the same offense as WF?
Clearly, maria14, you don't know the Laws better than me. As well as? Perhaps. Better? Not a chance.
At least you concur that your post was nonsense - that we can agree about.
@ Carpelone - when people come on here, male or female, spouting nonsense, I react. You know that by now. When they add "poms" and "pommys" and follow that up with "tipical male [sic]", It annoys me. The fact that she's a 14 year old girl (I'm not convinced she's a lady in any sense, my friend!) is beside the point. She's rude and deserves everything she gets.
Just as I do when I'm out of line. Which is rare. ;-)
With regards to the refs - how about Chabal? He's just got his qualification, so should be abng up-to-date. And he's played at the very highest level recently.
Longue vie ŕ l'homme des cavernes!

To hear that Kaplan was one of the finest men to play the whistle is edging toward blasphemy. I can only assume you're either very young or have never travelled. Kaplan was good on his way up but like so many when they arrive they become arrogant, Rolland suffers from the same disease. Refereeing should never be about nationality, it shouldn't come into it. I'd have nominated Derek Bevan to reff any country against Wales and I doubt there would have been a complaint. Sadly I can't see that with the current lot although Joubert stands out because he's even handed and follows the laws. Mind you unless you've had a few years trotting round the park both playing and refereeing its doubtful you'd have any idea what I'm talking about. Armchair fans should keep out of these discussions, they've no idea whatsoever.

Dont get nasty with Maria, mate. She is a lady and we should welcome more of them in this forum. I suspect that she is only a bit upset since her prediction about France being Grand Slam winners did not materialise.
I have always dreamt to meet women knowledgeable in rugby (instead I am always inevitably reprimanded for watching two rugby games in a row).
Keep it going, Maria.

Steyn is not that bad as some posters suggest.
However, since I suppose that being # 1 is the objectives of the Boks, I guess that we have to have either the number 1, 2 or 3 in each role.
I can easily see more than three fly-halves better than him, So, it is time to focus on new prospects.

Morne Steyn is not just a kicking flyhalf.... he never was
I remember him being the under-study to Hougaard who was a 'kicking flyhalf' at the bulls back then... Morne Steyn's all round game was not used by Pieter De Villiers and we are seeing glimpses of his full potential this season...
Having said that I am excited by the prospect of Goosen as well as our other Fly Half talen, Jaintjies and Lambie. The future looks bright

@ maria14 - I think you need to re-read your post and have a long hard think about the Sharples : Fofana comparison. It was the most daft decision I'd seen for some time.
I'm no great fan of Brian Moore and detest Stuart Barnes, but your ill-informed nonsense is almost as daft as theirs!
And before you start to dictate to us "poms" about the learning the "rules", you'd be better served calling them "Laws", as that's what they are. How are we meant to take you seriously when you're obviously not?

@ rugga_mind: When you say Morné is the 10 with the most tries, the most points and the most accurate kicker at the World Cup... I assume you mean out of the South Africans? Otherwise Merthens, Larkham, Carter, Wilko, etc. might have something to say about that statement...
In which case - DUH! He was picked! And Perfect Percy was a 15... And we had more than one 10 in 2003... and in 1999... and Joel won us the World Cup - so who cares if he scored a try or not! Your little stat is lacking background.
If Lambie or Grant were picked in 2011, then they would've been the ones kicking for the posts and getting all the praise... Just because he kicked his goals and scored a try against whoever doesn't mean he's our best 10!
Goosen doesn't need time to "mature"... Patrick Lambie and Francois Steyn did perfectly well in the Springbok jersey at the age of 19. Goosen is already far better than Morné... and so is about 2 other fly-halves. So it would expose Meyer's bias if he still sticks with Captain Kick.
Actually, the fact that you say Jantjies is not good enough just shows your rugby ignorance... You must be a Bulls supporter. In which case this whole conversation is pointless...
@ cab647: You can't judge the quality of games by looking at try-scoring rates...
@ bokjunkie: Mornę Steyn should stay far away from Goosen - I don't want him to teach him ANYTHING... Goosen already knows more than he does! I don't want him to be lead astray! As for experience - you can't teach that... You can only "experience" it for yourself. So the sooner the better!
It's time for Morné Steyn to go... He's been good, but good is not enough anymore if we can be GREAT.
@ 7ton: EXACTLY! I've been asking that question myself... :P (Precisely - that's exactly the type of behaviour I was referring to. He was like that with his line judges on Sat too...)

Certainly the hiring of a scrum coach won't solve the problem overnight for Ireland but you really do wonder why these national boards don't take a good look at what they are developing for the future. Welsh Rugby despite the odd success has only really come back to the fore over the last three years. Up until then whilst they could always name a good starting 15 provided everybody was fit, they now find themselves with cover in all positions and cover that is quality rather than making up the numbers. Scotland sadly just don't have the players, apart from Ansbro and Hogg they have no quality centres to speak of, likewise they are short of quality in the front row and the position of 10 has not really been set in stone. Ireland are not bringing players through, people still talk of O'Connell and BOD but despite there acknowledged class these guys are not immortal. England with 120-140,000 registered players still can't find a true openside or fail to pick one, the back up front row is not proven (Stevens not really put his hand up this season) the centres despite all the chat about Manu still lack guile and flare. Perhaps the problems should be addressed by the RFU and other bodies should set limits on imported players. In the Aviva premiership a team made up of the best players in each position would find itself short of English representatives, Despite the lack of funding it will be interesting to see how the Welsh regions progress in 2012/13, my guess is that the regions individually will be less succesful overall, but Wales as a Nation will increase their pool of quality players as youth will be forced to step up to the plate. Just look how The Scarlets have continued to play attractive attacking rugby despite having to, in the main, rely on youth and locally coached players.

@lawynd
Fofana's attempted intercept was done so as to YES knock on the ball in the upward direction so that he can run on to it BEFORE the hits the ground and attempt to gain meters for his team. similar to Tommy Bowe for ireland in about the 30th minute of the first half. Sharples attempt to stop a pass was a clear slap the ball down and pervent France from gaining meters thus a clear 10 mins in the sin bin. there is no discession about this matter the rules state you can pass the ball forward to yourself, examples are Rubini CauCau for Agen v Leinster in the H Cup and Brian O'Driscoll for Leinster v Ulster in the old celtic League (where in fact he threw the ball forward over two players)
The reason i said the poms dont know the rules is that when a french played carried the ball into contact the tackling english player never released or in in most cases failed to roll away quickly, Rolland warned the poms to move and release the player when they failed to do so it resulted in a french penalty. it was fair the poms need to LEARN the RULES of world rugby not the rules from the AP.
The reason the Rolland was speaking longer to the french team was that Theiry was seeking advise and complaining about head to head at the scrum time. Chris Robshaw could have done that for the poms but he was listening. Most people knows Rolland is a communicator if you seek advise he will give it unlike Ownes, Parson, Patterson who get very "ratty" when a captain seeks advise from them.

lawynd says...
@maria14 - Yes, because it's only the English who've suggested that Rolland shouldn't be allowed to referee France, right?
"The fact that poms are having a go at Alain Roland is due to them not understanding the rules fully and just listening to brain moore on the BBC waffling about scrums and other english nonsense." That simply shows your bias, well done. Brian Moore is a lot of things but as a general rule, knows what he's talking about; this is the guy who went on an IRB refereeing course when he was called out about his opinions, after all. He and nobody else has a problem with Rolland communicating with French players in French, but those of us who can also speak the language know that he was far more sympathetic and gave more time to them than he ever did to the English players, engaging the former as equals and the latter with curt and abrasive language; that's not 50/50 and is terrible refereeing.
If you really think that Sharples' interdiction (where the ball was all but passed to him) was any worse than Fofana's (who had to jump to reach the ball with one hand), then I'm not sure what else to tell you.
Posted 09:23 27th March 2012
maria14 says...
I dont understand the complaints against Alain Roland, from watching his games with no vested interest in the teams playing, he calls it 50/50. Any rugby fan that does not agree with the red card he produced to Sam in the WC should take a long look at themselves in the mirror. He turned Vincent Clerc threw 90 degrees therefore RED CARD, The same happened to Frans Houggard a few weeks ago in Super Rugby and his tackle was not even through 90 degrees!!!
The fact that poms are having a go at Alain Roland is due to them not understanding the rules fully and just listening to brain moore on the BBC waffling about scrums and other english nonsense. In the 6N France v England Alain Roland called the game fair, the sin binning of sharples was justified by the fact he made no attempt to catch the ball only to bat it down, this cant be compared to the fofana knock on where he was attempting to intercept the pass and score a try, sharples only seeked to stop the play.
The fact that brian moore and other pommy journlists were having a go at Alain Roland for communicating with the french through french does not mean he is helping them!!

Gosh! why did the IRB take so long to take notice of such an expert like yourself?

Seriously though you may be right about Kaplan as I remember with the infamous lineout saga re Wales/Ireland he appeared very impatient with the line assistant and would not let him finish what he was trying to say.

Got to agree that Goosen has talant we will see if the boks use him if not ill br disappointed. Also very good to see referees being held responsible 1 or 2 iffy games in a year is understandable in some ways .After all they arnt gods and will have bad days like everyone else. But constantly having bad games and being off the pace of things deserves relegation imo.Alain Roland take note please .As to stats as the saying goes you can make them say black is white given the right lever. In rugby terms it just goes to show its what you do with the ball that counts in wining games.I also hope that the jobs market shows the game is growing worldwide

Here I was thinking the uncontested scrums, when the Cheaters ran out of front rowers, aided and abetted their fightback.
@ Rugbyphile - Incorrect, the holder of the worst refereeing performance of all time remains in the one hand of good old pistonwristed Wayne "no penalites against one side for 60 minutes" Barnes.
AB fans called for some IRB accountability and HRH Paddy's head back in 2007 but all the anti-AB gloaters carried on gloating.
Funny how karma has come calling where they've come to choke on their gloats.
