London Welsh's star signing Piri Weepu got off to an understated start with his new club, on waterboy duties against Pontypridd.

Welsh were comfortable 40-12 winners in Weepu's first involvement with the club since landing in London on Thursday.

The World Cup-winning scrum-half is viewed as an essential player for Welsh in their bid to avoid relegation.

However head coach Justin Burnell stated that while Weepu was obviously a key figure, his status in the squad is no different to anyone else, hence Saturday's minor role.

"He's a game-breaker," Burnell told BBC Sport.

"His attributes are just phenomenal but the biggest thing we require is leadership - he certainly brings those leadership qualities in abundance.

"Although he is an All Black World Cup winner he is still classed as no different to our younger players.

"He was the head waterboy so he was running around doing all the duties, which is good - he has to buy into what we're doing."
