Suspended: Sergio Parisse
Italy captain Sergio Parisse will miss the rest of the Six Nations after being suspended for 30 days for insulting a referee.
Parisse has been handed a 40-day suspension of which ten are suspended, making him elegible to play again on March 18th.
The suspension means Parisse will miss Italy's three remaining Six Nations clashes against Wales, England and Ireland in a huge blow to the Azzurri's chances in the tournament.
Parisse was shown a straight red card for insulting referee Laurent Cardona in the Top 14 fixture between his club Stade Français and Bordeaux-Begles. Punishments for insulting a referee can range from 40 days up to one year.

@ capelonesomewithnomates, seen it all before numbnut. My bad tho it wasn't a dirty elbow but a typical SA cheap shot from behind and got dumped on his arse deservedly. Did you notice the apology from thorn which was acknowledge by smith before his typical SA cry baby outburst after the match. Yes an apology hmmm there something you don't see from a bokke. Say you wouldn't have any footage of a bokke committing foul play would you? Silly me there's millions online.

jaycee_111,
No, I did not say that "refs are not performing well..."
I mentioned that players and fans are frustrated by lack of consistancy and decision making. Not for one moment do I believe that, overall, referees at the highest levels are not performing well.
With regards to interpretations, if the IRB is handing these down to referees but not telling the public what is the point of this? It serves no purpose other than to confuse.
Just as a point of interest , surely laws cannot really be open to interpretation in any scenario. Imagine - "I'm sorry officer, I know the light was red. But I believed that the interpretation was that it was still safe to proceed...". Whose interpretation?
Putting this into a rugby scenario, rule 20.6 (d) clearly states "The scrum half must throw in the ball straight along the middle line..."
The law contains the word "must" so how can this be open to interpretation?
If the IRB wants to allow crooked feeds then either change the law or go watch rugby league!
So, to reiterate my point, inconsistancy (PROBABLY caused by IRB interpretations) are making the referees job a lot more difficult. I was not having an free pop at officials.

you say refs are not performing well at the top it must be different games from the ones I watch but unless you actually know what the parameters they are working within you cannot judge them. The laws are all about interpretations and these are handed down by the IRB to referees, they don¿t tell the public, the scrum put in is not something they are particularly concerned with they are more interested in the player safety in the front row so the refs watch this more. I would also point out every scrum and penalty is a mistake by a player not to mention most tries scored, e.g. missed tackle, slow movement etc are all player error yet if a ref makes one error in a game people moan about it for months, years if you are from NZ or South Africa, seems to me there is double standards why not criticise the defender who missed the last tackle as much as the ref who missed the forward pass in the previous try? If rugby supporters want perfect refereeing decisions they should watch American Football if not realise that one man might make a mistake every so often but players make far more

You cannot parallel soccer and rugby. In a contact sport, total respect for the ref if required hence there being up to 52 weeks for this offence. Parisse has form, but there is little evidence.
@mlbp I agree- lets not forget too Ali Williams cowardly kicking of Lewsey, Mealamus head butting of Moody, and the Umaga/Mealamu spear tackle on BOD, most of which went totally unpunished

@jaycee_111
As I mentioned earlier, I am in full agreement with referees (and subsequently the disciplinary team) handing out harsh punishment for insulting and ungentlemanly behaiour.
However, some of the frustration borne by the players is due to the referees and assistants themselves. A lack of consistancy, failure to apply the rules and poor (or none) decision making a some of the major issues of modern rugby.
As an example, make the scrum halves put the ball into the scrum straight down the middle .- it's still the law isn't? The IRB hasn't changed it as far as I am aware. Some refs blow for it others don't. Sends the wrong message to players, coaches and fans...
Don't get me wrong. I am the biggest advocate of "without the ref there would be no game" but for everyones sake (especially their own) apply the rules correctly and consistantly.

Having retired from club rugby some 7 or 8 years ago, when I see guys in the street who have refereed games that I have played in I still can't help but call them sir!
Without a doubt allowing back-chat or remonstrating with a referee or assistant is the dangerous slope. My fear is that we are already on that slope. How many times nowadaysndom you see players appealing to the referee or touch-judge? Loads of arm waving and gesturing...
However, it is within the power of the referee to put a stop to it once and for all: -
Before the match address both captains and coaches. Tell them that anyone, other than the captain, talking AT the referee or assistants will be guilty of ungentlemanly conduct - result? a free-kick. Next infringement? Penalty. Third infringement? Yellow card. Then see who wants to remonstrate...
While they are at it, the referee should also penalise players who deny the opposition the ball (stopping a quick through, for example) with the same policy. STOP the cheats!!!

Spot on...
Just out of interest what sort of ban should Manu have received for his appalling battering of Ashton?
Mind you, I'm sure his ban was influenced by the need for him to be available for England.

Typical FFR reaction and revenge for Parisse leading the stuffing of France ...
No proof, and no evidence, yet an effective 40 day ban. FFR trying to manipulate the wooden spoon!!
Not condoning back chat to refs either.....

True they have to lay the law down these refs, but if there is one area where the French game needs to improve its refereeing. Much of it is woeful. I was a referee for 15 years and some of the stuff you see over here is very poor.

the point is not whether insulting a referee has to bring to ban or not, the answer is obviously yes. the question here is whether he did it or not. and there is no evidence of him saying such words and may hints say that it was another player swearing. i'm just guessing Italy is going to need some wins against home unions before deserving arbitral respect

I agree with all the posters that arguing with ref (not to mention insulting him) is a devious behavior which has to be eradicated.
In this case, it seems unlikely that he insulted the ref, there was no reason and apparently the ref took for himself some words addressed in English to another player.

He got cited for alleged eye gouging, he got a ban for having recklessly made contact in the eyes area. That's make a huge difference.
I saw the footage and while being involved in a rolling maul, his hand slipped and went inadvertently in the face of Boric. Nobody complained or said anything on the pitch, but you know when you touch an All Black you always have to get something.
Instead, Brad Thorn can speartackle John Smit (causing a serious injury in the process) without a yellow card, not to mention a citing.

So: a half-italian, half-argentinian playing in France insults a french referee in english??? Please... How many times do you see english speaking players using the f word when the're disappointed? In italian it would be a c word and in spanish and french an m word! Surely not an f... By the way, without a "you" on the end it is surely not insulting anybody... What's going on?
