Sean Maitland: 'Just the beginning'

Scotland wing Sean Maitland believes the 34-10 Six Nations victory over Italy can lead to bigger and better things for Scott Johnson's team.

Maitland, who was making his home debut on Saturday, set up one of Scotland's four tries as they bounced back in style from their opening defeat to England at Twickenham.

"For 80 minutes we showed what we can do as a team," said the New Zealand-born back.

"It's just the beginning for us, there is definitely a lot more potential to unleash.

"We had a lot of things to prove as a team to Scotland and thankfully the team was given another chance to put on the jersey again this week and we repaid the coaches.

"It was time for action. We had talked a lot but we delivered.

"We have got to take a lot of confidence out of that. We have got two more home games in a row and that will be massive for us. We will just keep building.

"The last week training-wise was really good, the boys were on fire and took that into the game. So hopefully we can continue that."

Melkdave...

Scotland snuffed out everything that Italy tried. So many times as a Scots fan have had the lions share of the ball only to be left in tatters because of mistakes or just plain bad luck.

If anything the score flattered Italy in my opinion. Ireland and Wales will be stern tests for this young team, but they will be going into the Irish test with confidence.

Think what is bothering the likes of you... is that this might actually not be a false dawn for Scotland and they could very well become quite a good team.

Getting a bit carried away i think.Yes it was a good defensive performance that made Italy make mistakes. But the scoreline was flattering to say the least.Hoggs try was well taken, but should never have been 99 out of a 100 times Italy would have scored there, and Lamonts try was just carelesses to the nighth degree. The match could easily have been 2 tries each, and who kicked better .on the day decideing the winners. That said though,Scotland do have potential, and can beat both Ireland and Wales,if they well.

@armchairgeneral... I totally agree. If Scotland play to the best of their ability, I think they'll definately knock those two off. The question is, can we defeat the French in Paris and snatch the title from England like in 99? It would be a dream come true.

I totally agree with Maitland. I think this match will be remembered as a turning point toward great things in Scottish rugby. With arguably the most lethal back three in the competition, the future is looking very bright indeed.

I don't agree: Scotland had a good defensive performance in the first half, putting lot of pressure on italian pack. Anyway they received two gifted tries by Italy in the 2nd. They need to be tested for confirmations in next matches.

Gobby Maitland. It's good to see some antipodean positivity infusing the Scottish ranks. Can they beat Wales and Ireland? I think so.
