Stung Foden backs dangerous Saints

Ben Foden Northampton Saints 2012

Dangerous: Ben Foden

Northampton Saints full-back Ben Foden has backed his side to produce a big performance against Ulster this weekend in the Heineken Cup.

Last week's result saw Ulster run four tries past Northampton at Franklins Gardens in a comprehensive victory, with the Saints receiving plenty of criticism for their poor performance.

With Ulster now at home for the rematch and still unbeaten so far this season, Foden believes that despite his side being written off, Northampton can travel to Belfast and cause an upset.

"I think that it [the defeat] stung so much because we were at home and conceded four tries," said Foden to ERC Rugby.

"The performance let us down, as individuals and as a team. There is no finger pointing, we sat down and took the blame as a team, and we know we have to make things better.

"It is a big ask to go to Ravenhill and beat an undefeated side but for us it is about pride, of getting back on track.

"A lot of people will write us off - which is probably a good thing - but we are probably at our most dangerous when teams take us for granted and we will be looking to put in a big performance at Ravenhill.

"We did not play as well as Ulster as a team and obviously we will bridge that gap if we perform to our potential."

Every team has it's thugs Liam. Show me an Irish side who are squeaky clean. We aren't at the races at the moment. I think the truth is that the loss against Leinster 2 seasons ago knocked us for 6 and we have never recovered. It looks like the French are coming and hoovering up a load of players too so it may be even tougher next season. It's an uneven playingfield at the moment.

Northampton's thugs do too much talking off the pitch and never on it.

Northampton need to by in some quality players next season. Sadly I'm getting a sinking feeling that London Irish are going to be relegated this season, and if they do then they're are a lot of quality players that will become available from them. Corbisiero is the most obvious one, but Yarde on the wing would be a massive boost for NH as well.

Last week's showing was well...pathetic really. The scrum went ok (especially when mujati came off) and the lineouts were excellent. Other than that we looked lost in attack, especially off kick chases and we tried to play rugby in the wrong places at times. I find myself more and more attracted to the idea of Myler taking and keeping the 10 shirt, he may be a little less creative on attack but his defence, kicking and accuracy are leagues ahead of Lamb's and boy did Lamb have a shocker last weekend...

I really hope so. But they need a massive improvement to turn around the dross they served up last week.
