Jones blasts "arrogant" England

Critical: Eddie Jones

Japan coach Eddie Jones has criticised Manu Tuilagi and England for the Leicester centre's celebration after scoring against New Zealand.

Tuilagi appeared to slow down as he neared the line after intercepting a pass from Kieran Read, with Jones regarding it as a mark of disrespect towards the world champions.

"England are still very young," Jones told The Daily Star.

"If they can keep it together and go on and pick up 600-odd caps then they could potentially have a very good team.

"But there were already signs of arrogance at the weekend with their centre [Tuilagi] walking over the line."

"That's disrespectful to the world champions - and if they don't control that kind of thing they will not go forward as a team."

"You don't want to see that sort of thing creep into the game because it's not good for rugby.

"It doesn't wind up other teams but the game of rugby is about respect - and that's one thing we simply must keep in the game."

"New Zealand have scored numerous points against numerous teams and you never see any of their players do that. They run hard and try to get under the posts to make the kick as easy as possible.

"So why didn't the England boy do that? That's what the game is about. It's very important to keep a tight lid on that kind of attitude.

"The only guy I really know in the England management is Andy Farrell and I know he certainly will not tolerate that sort of thing. He'll be disappointed by what Tuilagi did."

How come everytime an england player does something it gets branded as arrogant?

You see tries like that all the time, and there's nothing wrong with it.

As for Tuilangis celebration - he does it everytime.

He'd have to explain the meaning himself but I always assumed it was religious and he was pointing to god.

Funny how its never been mentioned before but then again he hasn't played that well before against the big 3. How arrogant of him.

Other teams do this sort of thing - I remember a certain Welsh player who used to dive over the line just like Ashton. But I don't recall Jones complaining about that. Other teams players also occasionally walk over the line and I haven't heard Jones complain about that either. So is Jones's point that no team must do this if they play the All Blacks but it's ok to do it against different opposition ?

I realise that England will come in for more criticism than other teams. It's something we have to live with. I wish to God that Ashton would stop his stupid dive and I thought he'd said he wasn't going to do it any more. I loathe any form of glorification or triumphalism at an opponent's defeat and unlike Jones, I wish that no-one would do it, regardless of their nationality.

So an Aussie having a go at England for what one of their players did against the All Blacks mmmmmmm, well I never thought I would see see the day. Although I did appreciate Mike Brown's "support line" he ran when Sam Whitelock came across the pitch as Tuilagi ran his try.

OH MY LORD. How the hell has this even come up?! Sounds like a case of sour grapes to me, let us not forget in less than 10 minutes Tuilagi had a hand in 3 tries against the world champions...A: that feat in itself deserves a celebration, B: Tuilagi clearly saw the Nz second row was going to cut off his path to the posts but other than that he was in the clear; why waste energy and shorten the try for the inevitable All Blacks comeback, it was sensible play, not disrespectful. If you're taking that stance why don't we all just get down on our knees and pray to forgiveness from the mighty all blacks while we let them run riot over all world teams hmmm?!

and another thing, why when Ashton dives theatrically over the line is it a problem but not when Shane Williams does it.

I cannot wait to see Ashton do his stupidly arrogant 'swan dive' and the ball falls out his big dumb hands, its happened before and I believe he was even once warned about it. Good on ya, Eddie, although maybe thats how they do it in Samoa, after all he is a Samoan thru and thru.

Also, that "L" he put on his forehead ? Whats that all about ? Is he suggesting the All Blacks are 'losers' ? lol

Cannot wait to see the 2 teams next lock horns.

Honestly didn't see it much in the way of disrespect, I think he was just excited to score and didn't bother going to the center, and I honestly think the fact that he walked should be on NZ, who made little effort to pressure him after the interception. It was good on England and a fine and UNEXPECTED victory that should be celebrated. Also if they are going to focus on any bad behavior, I think Ashton needs to be dragged into the street and beaten for his stupid dives however.

Ashton can swan dive all he wants (although it may backfire on him one day) but its the "I'm No 1" finger in the air before he scores that makes him look like a tool of the highest order.

Score the try and then do backflips if you want... but score the try first and show some respect to the opposition.

TVaddict - give us an example of the ABs walking a try in and not bothering to score a run away try under the posts... I've never seen it

If you honestly think walking a try in something that should be embraced in rugby then I weep for the game...

For which country did Carlos Spencer play?

You know the guy who against the Crusaders (in 2004?) walked to get to the corner post.

Can't have been New Zealand because "They run hard and try to get under the posts to make the kick as easy as possible. "

in addition in his case successfully kicking the conversion was the difference between a bonus point or not.

2 things - Tuilagi APPEARED to do the loser sign as he crossed the line although no-one anywhere else seems to have commented (maybe its a Leicester thing).

secondly, what is this Australian chip on shoulder about English arrogance. It seems that, the second anything like success is mooted then out come the "arrogant" quotes. Does Eddie Jones have no recollection of Campese at all?

TVaddict says...

What an idiot.

First, New Zealand walk over the line a lot, in fact we commented on the Tuilagi try "How often do you see a team able to walk a try in on the All Blacks! Usually you need a sacrifice of blood to score against them and then they stroll them in at their leisure!" .

Second, why run it in when you can walk? Reduces risk of injury, uses less energy, and lets you take in the moment more.

Third, in what world is it disrespectful? Plus, why is he even commentating on it? Maybe he just wanted to get his name in the media again like the cheap 2 doller *hore he's making himself out to be.

You can guarantee he won't do it again, i don't envisage a Bok or Kiwi centre letting it ride when they meet next time. He might be chewing on a little mud or grass at the bottom of a ruck or two instead.
