Wales bid to host England clash

Possibility: Millennium Stadium

The Welsh Rugby Union have suggested that Wales could host England at the Millennium Stadium in their 2015 World Cup showdown.

England and Wales were drawn together with Australia and two as yet unnamed teams in Pool A, already labelled the Group of Death.

The Millennium Stadium was included in England's original bid document and could be used for the tournament and the Welsh say they want to play host to the actual tournament hosts.

And tournament organisers England Rugby 2015 have refused to rule out the possibility that England will have to go to Cardiff to play the match.

"It is very important to remember that Wales was included in the England's bid for matches in the Millennium Stadium,"said WRU chief executive Roger Lewis.

"What was pencilled in (for the Millennium Stadium) was eight games and the Welsh government and Cardiff city council would provide financial support to the tune of £1.4m.

"The UK treasury supported the under-writing of the competition and of course Wales is still part of the United Kingdom.

"We would be very welcoming hosts. The discussions will now begin. I think they (England) would embrace the opportunity to play in the finest rugby stadium in the world.

"I think everything must be up for discussion because it is the finest rugby stadium in the world."

Organisers ER2015 will spend the next three months deciding which matches will be played at which stadia.

"Roger has invited us, which is very kind of him. I am not going to say one way or the other," said ER2015 chief executive Debbie Jevans.

"At this point I am not ruling anything out an I am not ruling anything in. I understand where Roger is coming from. He is pushing for as many games as possible to be in Cardiff. I don't hold that against him.

"Now we know what the draw is we can go away and look at the appropriate venues for the appropriate matches."

I agree with APV1 and I am amazed Roger Lewis has suggested this; I think his tongue was lodged firmly in his cheek.

I'm a Welsh fan and the first thought I had when I saw the draw was that England v Wales as the opener at Twickenham would be a sensational start to what promises to be another excellent tournament. I'd happily take Australia at the Millennium, but England should have home advantage in all their games (surely that privilege comes with being host) and the Millennium could take maybe one group game and one or two QF's.

NO!

England should get the home advantage and play all of their games at Twickenham. We are hosting, so let's stack the deck in our favour when we can. There are so few opportunities to get any advantage and the Twickenham crowd is just one. So let's use it.

Can you imagine the crowd at the MS for an England : Wales match? Yes, it would be fantastic and the MS is probably a better stadium. But so what?

England should play at Twickenham.

Is the guy deluded, or just arrogant? Of course England would rather play at Cardfiff than at Twickenham or other England stadium!

JayStarr says...

I am still fuming that the Millennium Stadium is hosting any World Cup games at all - and now they have the nerve to ask for the biggest game too !

Is there an unwritten rule that the Millennium Stadium gets World Cup games every 2nd World Cup? Because that is what has been happening! This is linked to the ridiculous nature of the United Kingdom that I have spoken about before - both one country and four countries at the same time! So when they compete at the Olympics they are "Team GB" (so they can get more medals?), but when they compete at rugby they are Scotland, Wales and England - miraculously four seperate countries again, even going as far as picking a Welsh person (with a UK passport) to ref an England game (whose players all have UK passports) against a mutual foe (South Africa) and then try and tell us this is fair !

Just like the Millennium Stadium hosting WC games every 2nd World Cup is seemingly fair... Because the excuse is that in 1991 it was in "England", in 1999 it was in "Wales", in 2007 it was accross the channel in France, and in 2015 it will again be in "England"...

No. What really happened was that in 1991 it was in the UK, in 1999 it was in the UK, in 2007 it was co-hosted by the UK and in 2015 it will again be in the UK!

So I hope that 2015 is the last time we see the World Cup anywhere close to the UK for at least 20 years. After Japan I would like to see South Africa, USA, Australia, Italy and Argentina all get a go before we see another World Cup game in the UK again.

Note to the JayStarr-haters: Don't get me wrong - I don't hate the UK. I am a dual-citizen of it. I'll definitely be there in 2015 enjoying what will be a brilliantly hosted World Cup. But I also see things from the outside perspective, because I grew up and currently live in South Africa. What I hate is unfairness - and that is what I'm talking about above.

Shows the draw was not fixed, this is a nightmare for the iRB financial gurus!

Cannot see English RU letting Wales host the English game.

Maybe play Wales v Aus at Twickers, and England v Aus at Millennium?

I can even now see the demise of the Australians. Australia will play England in England and then Wales at the Millennium Stadium. If Australia comes through, that will be a great feat.
