Interim coach for Scotland?

27th November 2012 05:40

Scott Johnson

Logan's pick: Scott Johnson

Former Scotland wing Kenny Logan believes Andy Robinson's initial successor as Scotland head coach should be an interim boss.

Robinson resigned on Sunday following the 21-15 defeat to Tonga in Aberdeen, a result which saw Scotland fall to 12th in the world rankings following 10 losses in 13 Tests.

Senior assistant coach Scott Johnson and former Glasgow Warriors coach Sean Lineen, who is now head of player acquisition at the SRU, are leading candidates for a caretaker position.

Stuart Lancaster performed a similar role for England after Martin Johnson's departure as manager before being handed the job on a full-time basis.

"It would be silly to try to get a coach for the start of the Six Nations. Do what England have done, see how the players react and what happens," said Logan.

"I wouldn't rush into getting somebody before Christmas. I'd let the team sweat and see how they perform under Scott Johnson.

"There's not loads of coaches going to jump for the job, it's a big job to take on.

"If Scott Johnson does well, give him the job. Every coach has got baggage."

Nick Mallett, Jake White, Todd Blackadder, Wayne Smith and Bryan Redpath have all been linked with the job on a permanent basis.

How on earth do we hear from Kenny Logan but not from the SRU? Not sure about Johnson, he was Robinson's pick and has just arrived. Good luck to him but if we're talking caretaker only why don't we just say hell with it and hire Campese to field some young guns in the backs who don't have their natural talent coached out of them yet. Could be fun for the 6 Nations, nothing to lose.

Wayne Smith would be a great option, but he would need to come with a quality forwards coach. Blackadder is not likely to come, because he has his eyes on the AB's job and the NZRFU will not consider anyone who has not been working NZ for at least three seasons.

Have to agree with you there, my memory of Logan was that he also coughed the ball up consistently with the try line beckoning. He probably harbours thoughts of centralising the SRU to Richmond and have London Scottish as the main feeder team.

I bet 5£ it will be Redpath, as DaveJ said, he should be totally up for the job.

Mallet could be ideal if Scotland wants to keep his "forward" mentality game plan. Jake White It's probably the best out of them all.

Good luck Scotland, you really need it!

Oh no! Another who thinks the failure lies solely with the coaching set up.

Scottish rugby is treading water. I don't honestly know if the SRU are making money or breaking even or even in the red but you can bet your life that the current rugby structure has more to do with finiancial turn over than rugby excellence on the pitch. I mean, two clubs with which to pick a national team? Really? What chance did Andy Robinson ever really have? I don't think Professionalism is the best thing for Scottish Rugby, they obviously can't afford to do it properly, so they have this little cottage industry thing going on that kinda puts veneer of professionalism on scottish rugby.

When since did Kenny Logan become an authority on rugby? He hasn't said anything productive since getting voted off Strictly come dancing years ago! :-)

Knowing the tight fisted SRU they'll welcome his opinion and give Johnson the job when in reality, it needs someone with pedigree such as Mallet and a complete clearout of the coaching staff which has been a collective failure..

Kenny has a good point, I think Scott Johnson would be a sound appointment in the iterim period. However I think long term we could look no further than Wayne Smith. He said himself he wouldn't rule out a return to test rugby and has Scottish connections.
