Deans rules out north-south divide

Wallabies: Survive scare

Australia coach Robbie Deans admitted rugby's north-south divide is shrinking after Italy took the Wallabies to within three points of a major upset in a 22-19 win for the visitors on Saturday.

Australia came to Florence, the scene of a 32-14 win over the Italians in 2010, on the back of an encouraging 20-14 win over England at Twickenham which made amends for a 33-6 thrashing to France a fortnight ago.

However, Deans and Australia are likely to come under fresh scrutiny after conceding 13 points in a barren second half which almost gave Italy their first victory over the former world champions.

After hearing South Africa had narrowly beaten England 16-15 at Twickenham on Saturday, Deans gave his opinion on the supposed gulf in class between the northern and southern hemispheres.

"It doesn't sound like a big divide to me. There's nothing between them, you saw that today," said the New Zealander.

Australia will now head to Cardiff, where captain Nathan Sharpe will pick up his 116th and final cap, looking to seal their tour with a third win on the trot against Wales.

Sharpe, meanwhile, put Australia's result in perspective.

"It's very hard to win over here against a fired-up Italian side. I think there was a great amount of character shown by our boys," he said.

"It sure would have been nice to kick on from that first half but in a lot of ways it's a great lesson for us to take forward, particularly into next year."

By then Sharpe will be enjoying retirement, but for Italy the quest to compete with the big boys playing expansive, open rugby continues.

Virtually absent in an error-strewn first half in which Nick Cummins scored Australia's only try in the 18th minute to cement a 22-6 half-time lead, Italy returned for the second period in defiant fashion.

Deans admitted they had expected a different Italy to reappear.

"That's why we put such an emphasis on the start because we knew, in this context - it's a great stadium, it's a great arena to play rugby in - that if we gave the Italian side a sniff they'd come charging at us," he said.

"And that's exactly what happened. Obviously the start of the second half, wasn't the start we were looking for."

Only a minute after the kick-off Robert Barbieri claimed the Azzurri's only try of the game when he ran into the in-goal area to touch down after the ball had been kicked through, with Orquera converting.

When Orquera kicked a penalty minutes later to take the scores to 16-22, the fightback was on.

Italy's only positive from the first half had been their domination at the scrums. At times, it was their only real weapon for garnering points, via intermittent penalties against Australia.

Although enjoying more space and playing more flowing rugby in the second half, Italy continued to dominate the set-pieces.

"One of our biggest issues in the second half was we didn't have the ball, we didn't have possession," said Deans.

Sharpe added: "Our maul defence was okay. Scrummaging, certainly, as Robbie alluded to, we didn't get the set-piece ball we hoped to get.... you would say that the Italians scrummaged very well."

Italy's confidence, boosted by captain Sergio Parisse narrowly missing a second try early in the second half, gave them the momentum and for a short period there was a real feeling they would make their 15th game against Australia a win.

The Wallabies, however, defended well and flirted with finishing on a high when Adam Ashley-Cooper broke through only to be hauled down 10 metres from the tryline.

While buoyed by their positive second half, Italy coach Jacques Brunel simply had to lament their poor first half display.

"I'm disappointed about our first half, we made too many errors and gave them too many chances to put points on the board," said the Frenchman.

@NHsaints if you think England have closed the gap it is you who is being delusional. You say the English have closed the gap on the South Africans this year. Hmmm well have a good look as to who was not in this Bok team on this tour and think again. Has England got as many top players not available for selection as the Boks had? You say England should have won against this Oz team, one that has been ravaged by injuries and one that has to be one of the poorest for many years. The fact is despite the inadequacies of the Boks and the Wallabies they both won and despite everything thrown at the Boks England couldnt score a try and seemed to lack any vision of how to do so. No whilst I applaud Lancaster's work he has much to do to change the inherent conservatism inbeded in the English game. It will be interesting to see how Deans can get his team back to full strength against the Lions and then it will be game on.

No NHsaints just suggest you look to your mettle come 6Nations time and be afraid be very afraid of Italy.

Well, all these comments are as predictable as night follows day. I actually do think Deans is making excuses though as Australia have been very inconsistant this autumn. Is the divide getting closer? I'm not so sure really. Was the gap ever that big anyway? I also don't think so. It's a fact that the SH teams are better than the NH teams on average. However, this does vary on a regular basis. I actually don't think that there is massive difference between the second and tenth ranked sides in the world. On a given day, it wouldn't be a shock for any of those teams to beat each other. However, the SH teams don't lose often and win on a more consistent basis. Even if it is by a couple of points here and there. Let's be honets here, SA have not had a great autumn series but have won (by hook or by crook) all their games. They could easily have lost a couple and even the coaches and players have said this. Australia have been the same and have only played well against England so far this series. However, they have all been close and especially SA, have managed the win. BUT, a win it was and as much as we can bleat on about how flukey it may have been, it was a WIN. The only stand out side are the All Blacks who IMHO are streets ahead of the rest. The Australia draw recently was the fluke in that series, not the norm. I can't see much changing either right now. Unless there is a major change the NH teams will continue to play 2nd fiddle to the SH teams on average with us all looking up to New Zealand. That has been the case for as long as I remember.

Isn't the gap supposedly shrinking every year, before the south widens it again? More a case of the Wallabies being complete rubbish this year.

He,s making excuses for the Wannabies and his own job prospects by trying to make the NH sides look better than they are, don,t forget the home advantage these teams enjoy.

The Springboks and Wobblies aren,t at their best, but overall the SH teams have dominated these Autumn Internationals, with the superb display by Tonga sounding the death knell for Andy Robinson.

The much hyped French struggled against Samoa with only the Irish win being convincing though neither team would have got anywhere near the All Blacks.

Whether the Dingo can do another job on Wales next weekend remains to be seen but I can,t see the Welsh lying down easily for this one either.

I back the All Blacks to win at Twickenham, one point will do, but lets be clear, the divide is as big as ever and will improve as the years go by.

Hmmm, no gap? Who are the top four ranked teams in the world....consistently and let's be honest France are an honarary Southern Hemisphere team, just look at the way they play. You are measured by your results and cummulatively the South overwhelms the North! Mind you to be fair, if you took the AB's results out of the equation it would be a little closer, ah well who cares, winners are grinners.

I think there will always be a gap between Northern and Southern Hemisphere. The Autumn internationals are at the back end of a long season for the southern hemisphere boys and they still the majority of the matches.

When the Northern Hemisphere boys go on the summer tours they get beaten and moan its been a long season and injuries and so on so forth. The gap between the AB's and world rugby is getting bigger. Aus and SA will be 2 and 3 in world. Hopefully the Argies will take no 4 by the next world cup.

Robbie Deans is just being a nice kiwi.

@scrumpoacher that's obviously rubbish, England have closed the gap on SA this year and should have beaten australia, Fiji have fallen in opposite to Tonga and Samoa rising, Wales have fallen a long way whilst Ireland and Italy have improved and France have not only moved into the top 4 but also battered all 3 teams that came to their turf. The gap is most definitely closing, both between north and south and between Small and big (nations) now we're just waiting for the results of the NZ v England and Wales v Oz to see how those teams match up.

The divide isn't closing, Australia are just crap under deans and the Saffas aren't on form at all either. Then again none are any of the NH teams either apart from France.

really? did beating England "make amends for a 33-6 thrashing to France'? what short memories these Qantas Wallabies must have.

Deans may speak for Australia as far as this fiction of 'divide' but is he not awar of recent wins by SA and NZ.

I love his game plan 'we knew they'd come at us'. So it was planned, some early points then bumble about for the last hour scoring nothing. It worked, but not the most cunning of plans.

Can they beat Wales? three close wins at home earlier this year, 7 or 8 wins in a row I think, maybe the QW aura too big an obstacle again next wekeend.

Please leave Robbie, your the reason the divide has shrunk so much-not between the SH and NH but Aus and the NH.
