Close tussle: SA edge the Irish

South Africa clawed their way back from nine points down to beat Ireland 16-12 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Saturday.

In a tale of two halves, Ireland looked on course for a famous win after leading their visitors 12-3 at half-time.

The pressure was on for South Africa, but when it mattered, they delivered.

The Boks clicked into a higher gear after the break, scoring thirteen unanswered points to deny the Irish and open their end-of-year tour with a hard-fought win.

The result doesn't make pretty reading for Ireland coach Declan Kidney and his troops - since the World Cup, they've played nine games and have won just two of them. It also condemned Ireland to a fifth successive Test defeat, which is their worst losing run for 14 years as they failed to claim redemption for a painful 60-0 drubbing by New Zealand in June.

This was a Test match for the taking though for the Irish, who simply fell off the pace in the second half. There were opportunities for the hosts to shut South Africa out in the first forty, but those were squandered... leaving Ireland fans thinking what could have been.

Ultimately, South Africa hung on for a well deserved win grinded out with a solid forwards display.

Missing a whole host of players through injury, the Irish were expected to struggle against the Boks. It was anything but the case as for large parts Ireland dominated, whilst South Africa paid for their frequent ill-discipline.

Ireland took advantage of every entry into South Africa's half as fly-half Jonathan Sexton punished the visitors from the tee - nailing three penalties in the opening quarter to give his side a handy lead.

Sexton's opposite number Pat Lambie managed to put the Boks on the board with a penalty of his own from bang in front but missed another attempt from further out - proving just how much South Africa are missing the injured Frans Steyn's boot.

And when Sexton wasn't raising the flags with his sucessful kicks at goal, Ireland were full of running and passing the ball as if it were a hot potato - giving their visitors plenty of tackle practice.

Sexton's fourth penalty on the half-hour mark opened up a nine-point (12-3) lead for the Irish, and the Boks looked rattled. It then went from bad to worse for South Africa from the restart after wing JP Pietersen was sin-binned for an early hit on flank Chris Henry - leaving the visitors down to 14 men.

It certainly wasn't what the Boks needed, but breathed a sigh of relief a few minutes later when Sexton pushed his fifth penalty shot wide. The visitors, who did well not to concede any points with a man short, had a rare chance to close the gap on the stroke of half-time only for Ruan Pienaar to fail from far out with his first attempt.

The visitors made a better start to the second half though and when number eight Jamie Heaslip was given his marching orders, South Africa hit back with a try to Pienaar when the scrum-half went over from close range.

Lambie added the extras, and all of a sudden the tourists were right back in it (12-10).

The Springboks then hit the front for the first time in the match when Lambie slotted over his second penalty that silenced the crowd yet again (12-13). South Africa's one-point lead then turned into four after that man Lambie once again found his target which proved to be the final nail in Ireland's coffin.

Man of the match: Ireland's back-row made their presence felt but lock Mike McCarthy was the pick of the forwards while in the backs, Jonathan Sexton was near-flawless from the tee. For South Africa, Pat Lambie had a mixed performance but one that certainly won't cost him his place and Ruan Pienaar proved to be a thorn in Ireland's side all night. But we've gone for hooker Adriaan Strauss, who bulldozed his way through one Irish defender after another and threw his darts well at line-out time.

Moment of the match: Whilst JP Pietersen was also sin-binned, Jamie Heaslip's yellow card certainly changed the course of the match as South Africa claimed seven points in the Ireland skipper's absence.

Villain of the match: Pietersen's brain implosion that saw the Bok speedster smash into Chris Henry without the ball sparked a massive brawl, with plenty of pushing and shoving to get the blood boiling. But the Boks ended second best, after JP was given his marching orders.

@PREEST

"The ABs scored tries, boks didn't" Actually Habana scored that gem of a try, the try of the tournament. But i do agree that SA need to attack more and stop kicking. They look good when they attack.

Coming up to half time I predicted SA to come back and win in the 2nd half .It was plain to see Ireland could not score a try with multiple phases where as SA just needed to hold the the ball and you could see them scoring. Not a great game but predictable.

@ Stoigen

I agree with you're comment about darcy i would much prefer to see cave/ mcshaary/ marshall or mcfadden there. But lets not put rose tinted glasses on. The players are the ones who influence the game once the cross the white wash and lets be fair some of the guys didnt front up Jamie Heaslip im looking at you.

Pretty (not to watch) crap game really, wished I hadn'y got up so early to watch it. Ireland cannot win close games nothing changes. Well done @ben7 turning a poor Ireland v SA game into a how hopeless the AB's are and they are only No1 thanks to the ref's, good lateral thinking old chum.

PREEST says...

@ben7 what? So the ref cost Ireland that game? You do remember the ABs put 40 odd points on the Irish in the first game and then gave them a 60 nil drubbing in the third? And Dunedin? You obviouly didn't watch that game, did you? The ABs scored tries, boks didn't, and they had poor discipline. I'm sorry that you took offense to me calling these too teams boring, but they were. It was a boring game of rugby. SA need to return to their attacking ways. The up and unders are not working anymore. Lambie must have been given the order to kick high too, because that's all he did.

Ireland were terrible. Boks were terrible. Ref was abismal. Linesman was abismal. Late tackle? Please.. Hougaard offside from Lambie kick, I thin not! Reffing is a joke these days I dont see what the point of touring is. Boks wake up to NH rules & refs. They wont let you play so adapt.

I think new_j4a was paying Ireland a compliment as they did play well in parts and could of almost sneaked it in the end. No need to begrudge Ireland that. The better team won though and just as well or else you would be blaming crap refereeing.

Why not just stick to this game instead of wandering of and blaming the ref for SA's loss in NZ. They lost because of their own bad discipline and tactics and the fact that NZ were good enough on the day

every time Murray decides to box kick, he should be shot. Poor play by both sides. The November internationals are always poor because the conditions are awful. Ireland failing to put points on the board when Pietersen was in the bin was the first nail in the coffin.

SA were there for the taking.

If we want better international rugby the calendar needs to be sorted out.

@PREEST - Argentina did not show us how it was done. Argentina were terrible but Wales were appalling. (Priestland is on the worst form of the past few years and it really cost them)

Stoigen says...

@Cookiemunste nonsensical comment? The only reason he brought in new players was because injuries forced him to.

Paul Marshall & Darren Cave should have been starters and why oh why is he still insisting with Gordon "I haven't played a good game since 2004" Darcy. I wouldn't be surprised that if Darcy got injured Kidney would try and convince Mike Gibson out of retirement.

I am so sorry for all the rugby fans out there would watched that game. Very poor from both teams. Leinster, Munster or Ulster clubs teams could of won that match. Kidney has to go as he is a reactive coach not proactive. New players on the team only to injuries, new caps should be gentley brought on to the international team, not all thrown on together in one match. What was the game plan? Anyone? At times Irish players were huddled around the ball like a camp fire?! Scrum failing early 2nd half, not till 70mins subs brought on. We need a game plan and a long term thinking coach, Kidney go please, think of the children...

What game were u watching? Ireland were superb? Both teams were bad

@PREEST

Isnt this the same "boring" ireland team that dominated all game vs nz in june but crap reffing cost them? and the same "boring" bok C team that dominated in dunedin but once again bad reffing cost them?

well played the BOKS .BUT I HAVE TO SAY (in caps) TEST RUGBY IS BECOMING SOOoooOOOO BORING. I would rather see the crusaders v harlequins for example.

Awful 1st half from the boks but great 2nd half. I thought both teams were pretty bad tbh but boks were better, especially considering theyre missing their first choice number 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 14 and HM insists with picking rubbish players at 5, 12, 13 and 15. I dont see why ireland keep complaining about their injury toll. From what i know theyre only missing their first choice 2, 5, 6, 7, 13 and 15

Ireland were superb....big wakeup call for the Boks. In the end, the right team won, but does anybody anywhere enjoy watching Wayne Barnes ref....pedantic tw@t from both side's point of view.

Ireland again spirited, one thing you can't fault them on is the tenacity of their Forwards and the quality of their halfbacks. They need some wins now though.

Heyneke Meyer game's play is not great, Boks should have at least won by 10 against this Irish side (no offence to Ireland but key players injured). also his selection of players is questionable!!! stop with the kicking, when the Boks kept the ball they actually scored a try, you think this would be obvious...
