Boks fight back to down Irish

Close tussle: SA edge the Irish

South Africa clawed their way back from nine points down to beat Ireland 16-12 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Saturday.

In a tale of two halves, Ireland looked on course for a famous win after leading their visitors 12-3 at half-time.

The pressure was on for South Africa, but when it mattered, they delivered.

The Boks clicked into a higher gear after the break, scoring thirteen unanswered points to deny the Irish and open their end-of-year tour with a hard-fought win.

The result doesn't make pretty reading for Ireland coach Declan Kidney and his troops - since the World Cup, they've played nine games and have won just two of them. It also condemned Ireland to a fifth successive Test defeat, which is their worst losing run for 14 years as they failed to claim redemption for a painful 60-0 drubbing by New Zealand in June.

This was a Test match for the taking though for the Irish, who simply fell off the pace in the second half. There were opportunities for the hosts to shut South Africa out in the first forty, but those were squandered... leaving Ireland fans thinking what could have been.

Ultimately, South Africa hung on for a well deserved win grinded out with a solid forwards display.

Missing a whole host of players through injury, the Irish were expected to struggle against the Boks. It was anything but the case as for large parts Ireland dominated, whilst South Africa paid for their frequent ill-discipline.

Ireland took advantage of every entry into South Africa's half as fly-half Jonathan Sexton punished the visitors from the tee - nailing three penalties in the opening quarter to give his side a handy lead.

Sexton's opposite number Pat Lambie managed to put the Boks on the board with a penalty of his own from bang in front but missed another attempt from further out - proving just how much South Africa are missing the injured Frans Steyn's boot.

And when Sexton wasn't raising the flags with his sucessful kicks at goal, Ireland were full of running and passing the ball as if it were a hot potato - giving their visitors plenty of tackle practice.

Sexton's fourth penalty on the half-hour mark opened up a nine-point (12-3) lead for the Irish, and the Boks looked rattled. It then went from bad to worse for South Africa from the restart after wing JP Pietersen was sin-binned for an early hit on flank Chris Henry - leaving the visitors down to 14 men.

It certainly wasn't what the Boks needed, but breathed a sigh of relief a few minutes later when Sexton pushed his fifth penalty shot wide. The visitors, who did well not to concede any points with a man short, had a rare chance to close the gap on the stroke of half-time only for Ruan Pienaar to fail from far out with his first attempt.

The visitors made a better start to the second half though and when number eight Jamie Heaslip was given his marching orders, South Africa hit back with a try to Pienaar when the scrum-half went over from close range.

Lambie added the extras, and all of a sudden the tourists were right back in it (12-10).

The Springboks then hit the front for the first time in the match when Lambie slotted over his second penalty that silenced the crowd yet again (12-13). South Africa's one-point lead then turned into four after that man Lambie once again found his target which proved to be the final nail in Ireland's coffin.

Man of the match: Ireland's back-row made their presence felt but lock Mike McCarthy was the pick of the forwards while in the backs, Jonathan Sexton was near-flawless from the tee. For South Africa, Pat Lambie had a mixed performance but one that certainly won't cost him his place and Ruan Pienaar proved to be a thorn in Ireland's side all night. But we've gone for hooker Adriaan Strauss, who bulldozed his way through one Irish defender after another and threw his darts well at line-out time.

Moment of the match: Whilst JP Pietersen was also sin-binned, Jamie Heaslip's yellow card certainly changed the course of the match as South Africa claimed seven points in the Ireland skipper's absence.

Villain of the match: Pietersen's brain implosion that saw the Bok speedster smash into Chris Henry without the ball sparked a massive brawl, with plenty of pushing and shoving to get the blood boiling. But the Boks ended second best, after JP was given his marching orders.

How could anyone say that this game was enjoyable. Only the Saffas really, because they won it. The Northern Press have bleated on about the injuries to the Irish team but completely ignored the injuries to the Boks.

Barnes actually ruined this game with his incessant whistle and helped make it a stop strat game. Worse still are his condescending comments to the players. These comments actually show him to be the first class prat he comes across as.. Barnes needs to show some respect for the players as the game is about them and not him. He needs to stop looking at one side and he would get less of the handbags at dawn. Barnes has never been the brightest referee on the circuit as he becomes fixated on one team and ignores the other. Thank goodness the All Blacks have not drawn him on this tour as he would certainly slow down the All Black game.

@bigb6969 Dublin is not in the UK.

As an Irishman I can say that Ireland were definitely crap and the ref cost us nothing -as if you go into games with the game plan that we used you should expect to be slaughtered. Well done SA, I know you are not happy with the performance but at least you got the W

I think Ireland played with passion and made alot of running. Against a weaker defence, they would have crossed the whitewash but the defence of the Boks was very aggressive to the point where Ireland never looked likely to break through. Sexton misseed a few tricks to change up the game and create different angles of running. The Boks hardly saw the ball in the first half and were penalised to a level that stopped the game being a spectacle. I thought the ref was very poor, though in fairness, he made blunders on both sides.

SA looked like a team with no direction and very little leadership. Strauss seemed to take on the Captains role and the improvement in the forward structure was noticable.

Im afraid that JdV is not the answer andd needs to make way soon. Fine player in his day, but not on current form. Kirchner needs to start a new career soon PLEASE!!! In fact, only Pienaar and Pietersen in the backline looked international standard. Of the forwards, JdP had an excellent game as did Strauss, Vermeulen and Alberts. Etzbeth made some carries, but was well marked.

I would say that the Boks are at about 30% of where they need to be to compete with the AB's and about 70% to compete with the rest

Isnt this the same "boring" ireland team that dominated all game vs nz in june but crap reffing cost them?

Eh?

Ireland were okay in the second test in Christchurch, but failed to put away New Zealand, just as they failed to put away SA yesterday. In the first and third tests in June Ireland were taken to the cleaners with them being humped 60-0 in the third test.

I thought the second half was absolutely brilliant, two teams desperate to win, both teams defending for all they are worth. Was good rugby.

Lambie had a mixed game, but why attack his kicking? In the first half south africa got very little quality ball or continuity, and he can't run every ball, south africa isn't fiji or japan, we have our own style, we play the percentages and it has worked for us... Lambies tactical kicking will improve, and it will be brilliant.

Can't agree more that adriaan strauss was phenomenal, but except for the yellow card jp pieterson might also have been motm he almost with every tackle, tackled the irish backward.

How many minutes did Juan De Jongh play? Zero a big fat '0'. Kirshner is there for up and under well he lost his first two. And what has Taute done so far to justify his selection at 13?

HM relies too much on size, I cant believe how some people rate Willem Alberts in this country. Other than limited ball carries he offers nothing else, its like he is becoming the new Pierre Spies.

What is it in the UK, they build a great stadium (Millenium before and Aviva now) but can't get the pitch right !!. They put all the money into facilities it seems yet have not money for a proper pitch. Did you see it cut up, certainly did not help the entertainment factor.

Overall a poor game, Ireland never looked like scoring a try, but a little better goal kicking they could have snuck it.

For all the criticism I thought Darcy was the best Irish back. Made a few half breaks.

COLENSO!!!! THE MOST SHOCKING REFFING I'VE SEEN IN A WHILE, SINCE LAWRENCE. IF PETERSON WAS A HUNDREDTH OF A SECOND SLOWER HE WOULD'VE BEEN A HERO!! IT AMAZING TO SEE HOW IRELAND SLOWED DOWN THE PLAYERS BY HOLDING THE PLAYERS BACK AND RUCKING THEN WHINGING ABOUT THE BOKS. AT LEAST THE SPECTATORS DID'T BOO WHEN EITHER TEAM KICKED WHICH SHOWS SUBERB SPORTMANSHIP.

All of you posters. The only interesting thing was when there were 'handbags at dawn' after JP P shoulder charged the Irish fullback. Otherwise the match was so dull that I went on the internet to look up other match reports. SA were pathetic!

The Boks seem to have an inability to commit enough men to the breakdown, possibly because they are a) unfit or b) the loose forwards carry too much ball. The loose-forwards stood off on numerous occasions and waited for the ball to be passed to them to do the running, rather than hitting the rucks hard. On the other hand Henry hit the rucks hard every single time he got the opportunity and won all of Ireland's points through donkey work. But that's a lesson SA packs have been taught over and over again and its still not sinking in.

Barnes was seriously lacking, there I've said it.

Just home from watching this game. I have to say the boks were very very poor. Any of the rugby championship teams would have beaten us by 10 or more points. HM really needs to get creative. This nonsense of kicking the ball away is not the way to play rugby. Very difficult to take positives out of this match.

With so many injuries, Ireland was not expected to finish close but full marks for they did. A full strength Irish outfit can topple any team. Great performance by some new players. Congrats to Boks for winning because that's what matters.

what do people think of the Ireland #2 jersey - I thought the black v SA's dark green were worse than if Ireland had played in their usual shade of green. Not different enough between the team colours.

new_j4a. never thought we would ever hear you speak negatively of a fellow ref. but, in a way, it makes it all the more special. of course, we all agree. welcome to our world!!

i really felt for the irish this afternoon. they seemed well set and half time. heaslip moment was significant.

but then again, i'm posting this after watching the france aus game. and suddenly, in the context of that game, both these sides looked well below what they can and should be.

wow, yet another team trying to cash in on a "black uniform". Does it really have to be black? Why not different variations of green and white?
