Frans Steyn: Won't play again this year

Springbok team doctor Craig Roberts has confirmed that centre Francois Steyn will not play again this year.

Steyn, who missed last weekend's victory over Australia due to an ankle injury, will undergo surgery on Wednesday and is set to be out for three months.

"We've been doing a number of scans and seeing specialists, there is quite few loose bodies in the joint, little pieces bone that in time has broken of ankle," said Roberts.

"Every now and then bones catches into the joint and gets excruciating pain, it can damage the joint.

"It was taken as long term decision, he will be done (operated) on Wednesday, unfortunately keep him out for three months, also for end of year tour."

Young fly-half Johan Goosen sat out of training on Monday because of a bruised heel while full-back Zane Kirchner also did not train due to a bruise on his hip-bone.

"He (Goosen) was comfortable running (on the field), just when he planted his foot for kicking," Robberts said.

"We always knew beforehand that he may be sore, which is why early on we decided to change kicker."

You did not. It was just an example of another 12 who is a strong ball carrier and powerful runner, even though not elusive.

I am a great fan of Roberts, he has also got a brain and I massively enjoyed what he wrote on this column.

makemehappy, I could have had that 100 games at inside centre if it was not for that oppresive regime... ;)

@Carpelone - where do I mention Roberts??? You can of course compare, but lets be fair, you'd pick Roberts everytime. I seem to remember he performed very well for the Lions against SA!!

@ makemehappy

Has Roberts any side step? He just runs straight lines and he is was of the best in business. 13 needs to be elusive, to run the outside gap.

Frans is good once he is fit again.

He was the best 12 last yeat in NZ.

He can run, offload, defend, carry what else do you need from a 12?

My opinion is that even though they have different characteristics only one among JdV and him should play (unless to bring Frans back at 15).

I also agree that his recent performances were not good.

@martinmarais78 - obviously not as much as you, you 100 capped inside centre. You are right, a great plodding centre is an asset to anyside wishing to fail to break down the AB's defence. You're entitled to your opinion, but don't tell others that they aren't entitled to an opinion. That attitude belongs to a very oppresive regime. Time to be enlightened and move on!

How much do most of you guys know about the role of an inside centre???? Your guys comment sound like some clueless Natal Surfers sitting on the beach discussing rugby!

Frans looked great when Goosen came onto the field and ALWAYS take the ball forward in play. With Goosen goose stepping all over the place and France POWER running, De Villiers will get through gaps with the wings and fb scoring more times than under static Morne.

A big powerful inside centre is an asset to any team! (Not even mentioning his canon foot and his versatility than can make him cover any backline position except 9)

@bokbevok - that was such a funny joke - you are obviously a guy that lots of people laugh at! So you agree that they looked better too. Of course Goosen did look good and of course the Aussies did look poor. I did also spot more pace in midfield! You seem to be missing my point with your comments. Try again - and keep on being laughed at!!

Agree with @makemehappy - Frans Steyn is quite a ways beyond his prime. Perfect example of a once good player who chose to go up North and came back less capable. Bigger, yes, but not necessarily in a good way.

OK in defence and has a big boot on him of course, but not much else. If someone else can fill his kicking role, SA would be better off without him.

Out of action for three months? No training because of an ankle injury? He's going to pile on the pounds.

At makemehappy or should I say fast asleep

Back line was good because goosen fed ball down line a lot more not because change in the centre. He also got over the gain line many times then fed ball out. None of this was due change in mid field.

Oz were rubbish and are rubbish that's why we looked so good. Last time out against

NZ was the perfect game plan to beat NZ but never took the opportunities to score when they came. More of the same for NZ as they will know they never won last game but Boks gifted it to them with poor kicking. Go boks

Agree with makemehappy - all that french food has done damage.

@Carpelone - I suppose you're saying that he's lighting fast, has a superb side-step? He's a big lump, and South Africa clearly need more pace in their back line, than he was able to offer. You certainly made me chuckle! They seemed to do pretty well on the weekend without the Steyn's. Much more fluid!

Anyway, Frans needs to lose weight and get Test Match fit again. I am sure that he will pick less injuries.

Just not an attacking threat. Great defense and good boot, but this team needs to play with greater pace. Anyone can see that, after the last few years worth of awful selections.

So we can expect an unchanged line up for saturday then...

Taute to have another shot at 13.... De Villiers at 12 which imo is his best position.

I feel bad for Steyn but this has made a difficult decision for Meyer much easier.

What a big blow for Springboks. F. Steyn is a legend. A great player. I hope he recovers soon.

Juan de Jong to centre and Jaco Taute to full back?
