Hat-trick: Bryan Habana

South Africa bounced back from consecutive defeats on the road with a comprehensive 31-8 Rugby Championship victory over Australia at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday.
The Springboks led 14-3 at the interval but the Wallabies were lucky not to be much further behind. Two tight calls from the TMO meant the home side did not have the four-try bonus point by half-time, but Heyneke Meyer's men secured a full house of points after the break as Bryan Habana bagged a hat-trick to add to earlier scores from Zane Kirchner and Francois Louw.
Mike Harris touched down in the last quarter for the Wallabies, but the horse had already bolted. Once Kirchner had scored the first try, the visitors never looked like getting back into the contest.
While Bok fans will certainly sleep better after their side showed the most attacking prowess of the Meyer era so far, their enthusiasm should be held in check by the fact that this was not Australia's strongest team by any stretch of the imagination (and Robbie Deans' squad looks to have been even further depleted by injuries as they head to Argentina after Adam Ashley-Cooper was taken from the field on a stretcher).
The first quarter ended scoreless after Berrick Barnes missed an early chance to open the scoring before his opposite number Johan Goosen also failed with his only two shots at goal.
But the Boks showed their positive intentions by turning down another penalty - won thanks to an impressive rolling maul - in the 21st minute, opting rather for an attacking line-out. The decision paid off as, after a few phases of pressure, Zirchner did well to twist and turn his way over for the first try.
Ruan Pienaar took over the kicking duties and provided the extra two points from the tee but Goosen showed why he was chosen at ten with a scintillating line-break that took him to within inches of the line. The TMO confirmed that he was short of his first Test try, but Bok fans would have nevertheless been chuffed to see their fly-half attacking with ball in hand.
A well-taken try from short range from Habana and another conversion from Pienaar doubled the lead as the Wallabies struggled to contain their hosts.
The Wallabies got on the scoreboard as the half drew to a close when Kurtley Beale split the uprights but the visitors where lucky not to go further behind when Kirchner bolted into the same corner as his earlier score. The full-back's heal clipped the touchline though thanks to a try-saving tackle from Ashley-Cooper which left the Wallaby centre out cold.
Australia's woes, especially at the breakdown, continued after the break and the visitors were reduced to fourteen men in the 53rd minute when James Slipper was sent to the bin for his transgressions on the deck.
His absence proved to be extremely costly for the tourists with the Boks adding two more tries while he watched from the sidelines.
Louw, who was excellent once again, was rewarded for his efforts as he scored from the back of a rolling maul.
Six minutes later Habana added his second after some quick thinking from the speedster, who took a quick throw-in to hooker Adriaan Strauss, who also had clarity of mind when he pulled in the defenders and offloaded to the flyer.
Harris scored in the right hand corner as the Wallabies refused to go down quietly but Habana had the last say when he raced home for his third touchdown after Louw took a gap and sent the winger on his way to his 46th Test try in the 79th minute.
Man of the Match: There were handful of candidates in green with the home loose trio doing very well, but you can't look further than the hat-trick hero Bryan Habana, who seems to have found his mojo again and had the fans at his former home ground out of their seats.
Moment of the match: It might not have come from a classic bolt down the touchline, but Habana's first try was the product of the Boks' willingness to keep the ball moving (and the veteran wings knack for finding gap). It put the hosts 14-0 up and the Wallabies looked beaten for all money.
Villian of the match: No nasty stuff to report

JdV a different prospect at 12, much as I like Frans I would prefer to keep today's centre combo considering the need for JdV as captain. Forwards building nicely. Decent game from Goosen that just hinted at the improvements to come. Hope Adam Ashley-Cooper is ok.

Time to come home Robbie, you obviously don't have the dressing room, and whether its your fault or that of someone gutless wonders with no ticker (eg QC and his petulant mates), you're better off coaching a NZ Heartland team who will actually play for their jersey.
On your way out, give the keys to Ewen, thank John O'Neill for the hospital pass, and pick up the "blame the Kiwi coach" excuse card that Trinats6 keeps playing. You can leave him the "all those injuries", "last years champs", and "Richie is a cheat" cards, otherwise he won't have much to say on this site.
Well played South Africa - great to see the ball wide and Habana scoring tries! Next weekend will be epic!

Good game, but I refuse to be carried away.
To be fair to Australia, they lacked too many players to compete with the Boks. Their first XV is to be feared. Hope AAC is well. Beale is a prospect at 10, I would drop QC.
MOM Francois Louw. Good debut by Goosen and Taute, but not excellent. Habana excellent (although the last try was in New Zealand's style, i.e. a for...ehm flat pass).
Lot's of room for improvements for the Boks.
Bring on New Zealand!

31-8 is great for the record books but it was far from a champagne performance. It's still a win against a Wallaby side depleted by injuries. Not that we don't have our own injury problems, but our depth is considerably deeper. But defiantly the best performance in this competition by any of the four teams this year. Flo was the stand-out performer, superstar in the making. Some guys have all the luck; Jan Pickards grandson and a 'ryk-mans-kid' to boot. SARU and Bath need to have a serious pow-wow over his contract.

Wow! It really must be party time for bok fans if all the previous articles on SA selections this championship are anything to go by. With the exception of the guy in the bok last line of defence. Hehe.
Just a question to all saffas, what do you think of the sharks Paul jordaan? Was without a doubt the sharks best player in the s15 final and it seems to me atleast, that he is very dangerous everytime he touches the ball in the currie cup. Very fast and lots of x-factor. Yet i've never heard his name mentioned for bokke selection. Am i missing something???

Gotta feel for the Wollabies. How can a team have so many injuries ? They will have a tough game again next week. Much better effort from the Boks albeit from a very deleted Aussie team. However do not often see the Boks score 5 tries. Hope HM keeps with this type of game plan because the players seemed to enjoy it as much as us fans. Next week will a much different game but hopefully the plan continues.

Great attacking play by the Bokke. I still have issues with Kirschner at full back. Once we replace him with Lambie for good we will be a far better team. The forwards were immense in this match. Goosen had a good first match. Him running from the gain line made the wobblies unsure who to take. We wtill butchered a few tries. Place kicking an issue also. But I have to say its a much nicer feeling winning than losing as a famous south african philospher once said. The ture test will be the Ab's next week. Hopefully the pumas can do us a favour tonight.

Well a disaterous day for the wallabies, even more injuries, and more headaches for R.Deans.Reinforcements definatly on their way ,i think. That having been said ,the bokke where outplaying Australia in every department ,before the loss of B.Barnes,AAC and Samo. Not that K.Beale had a patically bad game,he with R.McCabe where the only outstanding wallabies today, but their forwards where just nullified and non exsistent, giving them no go forward or quick or decent ball.I could go on and on ,but that would be just cruel .As to the bokke ,well HM take note ,wasnt J.Goosen good, gave the bokke what they where missing.A RUNNING game,,with expanded backplay. They looked dangerous everytime they got the ball..Im also very glad the officals have picked up on the wallabies ,taking off a propafter 30mins appartently for tactical reasons, then bringing hm back on in the 2nd half when his now well rested, for injuries yes i and others understand that, but Australia wherent doing it for that reason, and where in fact trying to cheat no dought ,and no excuses about it .They wanted a fresh prop on the feild in the last quarter ,and trying to con the officals ,and bend the laws.VERY BAD FORM imo on that.

South Africa were too strong at the breakdown and collision. Their locks and backrow really stood out. I feel somewhat for Australia because of the injuries they had going into and during the game. They really didn't deserve that last try to be scored, especially when it was a three-metre forward pass (regardless of the momentum rule).

You say this wasnt a full strength Australia team which is true. But SA have just as many injuries. SA just have the depth to replace them.
