Rugby Championships South Africa v Australia Bryan Habana

Hat-trick: Bryan Habana

South Africa bounced back from consecutive defeats on the road with a comprehensive 31-8 Rugby Championship victory over Australia at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday.

The Springboks led 14-3 at the interval but the Wallabies were lucky not to be much further behind. Two tight calls from the TMO meant the home side did not have the four-try bonus point by half-time, but Heyneke Meyer's men secured a full house of points after the break as Bryan Habana bagged a hat-trick to add to earlier scores from Zane Kirchner and Francois Louw.

Mike Harris touched down in the last quarter for the Wallabies, but the horse had already bolted. Once Kirchner had scored the first try, the visitors never looked like getting back into the contest.

While Bok fans will certainly sleep better after their side showed the most attacking prowess of the Meyer era so far, their enthusiasm should be held in check by the fact that this was not Australia's strongest team by any stretch of the imagination (and Robbie Deans' squad looks to have been even further depleted by injuries as they head to Argentina after Adam Ashley-Cooper was taken from the field on a stretcher).

The first quarter ended scoreless after Berrick Barnes missed an early chance to open the scoring before his opposite number Johan Goosen also failed with his only two shots at goal.

But the Boks showed their positive intentions by turning down another penalty - won thanks to an impressive rolling maul - in the 21st minute, opting rather for an attacking line-out. The decision paid off as, after a few phases of pressure, Zirchner did well to twist and turn his way over for the first try.

Ruan Pienaar took over the kicking duties and provided the extra two points from the tee but Goosen showed why he was chosen at ten with a scintillating line-break that took him to within inches of the line. The TMO confirmed that he was short of his first Test try, but Bok fans would have nevertheless been chuffed to see their fly-half attacking with ball in hand.

A well-taken try from short range from Habana and another conversion from Pienaar doubled the lead as the Wallabies struggled to contain their hosts.

The Wallabies got on the scoreboard as the half drew to a close when Kurtley Beale split the uprights but the visitors where lucky not to go further behind when Kirchner bolted into the same corner as his earlier score. The full-back's heal clipped the touchline though thanks to a try-saving tackle from Ashley-Cooper which left the Wallaby centre out cold.

Australia's woes, especially at the breakdown, continued after the break and the visitors were reduced to fourteen men in the 53rd minute when James Slipper was sent to the bin for his transgressions on the deck.

His absence proved to be extremely costly for the tourists with the Boks adding two more tries while he watched from the sidelines.

Louw, who was excellent once again, was rewarded for his efforts as he scored from the back of a rolling maul.

Six minutes later Habana added his second after some quick thinking from the speedster, who took a quick throw-in to hooker Adriaan Strauss, who also had clarity of mind when he pulled in the defenders and offloaded to the flyer.

Harris scored in the right hand corner as the Wallabies refused to go down quietly but Habana had the last say when he raced home for his third touchdown after Louw took a gap and sent the winger on his way to his 46th Test try in the 79th minute.

Man of the Match: There were handful of candidates in green with the home loose trio doing very well, but you can't look further than the hat-trick hero Bryan Habana, who seems to have found his mojo again and had the fans at his former home ground out of their seats.

Moment of the match: It might not have come from a classic bolt down the touchline, but Habana's first try was the product of the Boks' willingness to keep the ball moving (and the veteran wings knack for finding gap). It put the hosts 14-0 up and the Wallabies looked beaten for all money.

Villian of the match: No nasty stuff to report

OK I will confess here, I was laughing. Unsporting i know, but it did turn into a comedy-tragedy farce towards the end.

My pre-match prediction of uncontested scrums was right, I must say the Wallabies pack did well at those, winning each of their own put-ins.

"last year's champs" - how hollow that sounds.

Good play from SA though really is hard to rate against such opposition. Habana's quick-throw and subsequent try a highlight.

Another trophy, with a game in hand, hope next weekend's match NZ-SA is another example of running rugby after some disappointing earlier matches in this tournament. Meanwhile, Robbie searches Argentina for touring Oz backpackers to fill gaps in his squad.

Still no Foxtel* & couldn't stomach the thought of listening to Kearns at 1am but based on the highlights packages, match reviews & comments thereon it seems like the 'boks played some footy as opposed to that weird forceback/bullrush thing they've been doing of late... based also on the final 30 of AB v Pumas I just watched at the local RSL, next week should be a cracker, match of the comp for sure.

@ Martinmarais78 says... are you high? Never give a sucker an even break as they say in these parts...

Couldn't help but contrast AAC's knockout tackle with Quade's whiney tanty on Thursday night, ably assisted by the panel's patsy (scripted?) questions: there's a bloke who knows what colour his jumper is, obviously wears it with pride & doesn't think twice about putting his body on the line for it. Does anyone seriously believe that Quade would've even thought about attempting such a tackle?

* my mistake was probably ticking the BPay option in the Method of Payment section of the kosher-looking contract my ever-so-friendly door-to-door Foxtel agent gave me to sign, rather than handing over my BSB & account no. on the Direct Debit autho attached to it: I may be a kiwi, may have lived in Queenzland (sic) for nearly 3 years & still watched the Warriors every week but I ain't stoopid, fella!

Dear oh dear, not only were the Wallabies bashed by a younger more typical aggressive Springbok pack, they were then humiliated by their own staff, by running out of players and therefore having to play out the rest of the game minus players, scoreboard would have looked more embarrassing if the Boks had a accurate kicker, but well done Boks some good young players coming on.Have to say i have never seen a match played with such a hold up over Australia's stuff up with their reserves and medical staff,it was almost laughable.

@ Trinats

DONT BLAME THE COACH!

Australia has been mediocre for the last decade that's why there was a large push to get Dean's into the frame. You try winning away from home with second string players coming from the weakest super 15 conference.

AUSTRALIA SUCK BECAUSE THEY ACTUALLY SUCK!

Get rid of Deans wah wah wah.... Everytime the Wallabies lose a game, it's sack the coach..sack the coach! You haven't lost that many, so most of you need to get over that complex you have. You maybe right that it's Deans time to go, not sure about him being a bad coach though, did win a bunch of Super rugby titles. Let's face it, with all the competition that rugby has in Aussie to catch the attention of young athletes, there is not a lot of depth in the game. This combined with that absolute idiot Cooper as well as all sorts of injuries, means only one thing for Deans. "You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear", especially when some of your players act like spoilt petulant little whingers.

Trinats - play blame the foreigner all you like but it doesn't fool anyone on the Canaries multiple short comings.

And Copper behaving like the worst kind of self involved bogen was just embarrassing, Sooner that tedious little whiner fecks off to the NRL the better.

If this is not the final nail in the coffin of that absolute failure Dingo Deans then nothing is. Get rid of him now - hopefully before the Pumas humiliate the Wallabies in the next round.

2eyedkiwi - I agree with you. Let Robbie go, and let him come back and coach in NZ. Not heartland - the Crusaders need him. Toddy has had his chance. At least Robbie won a tri nations. No Bledisloe, which would annoy all Aussies.

Australian rugby is clearly toxic if the likes of Quade Cooper can publicly slam the coaches and management and get away with it.

Can't remember the All Blacks doing that, even when John Mitchell had the team. Maybe John Hart that's his style. I know Tana Umaga dealt with his differences with Graham Henry early on and didn't do this through the media.

Why couldn't the senior players group take more control and direction of the Wallabies? Robbie isn't a dictator. If they need an Aussie coach to get the best out of their team, then so be it.

Good win for the Boks against an unlucky Aus team with many injuries, one has to say. Louw and Habana were massive with Pienaar and Goosen firing the backline for a change... Could have been a 50+ score if kicks went over and for a couple of missed tries.

Cant wait for the AB's in Soweto!

Just thought we could have also took one player off at the end as an act of sportmanship when Aussies were down to 14 due to injuries. (The game was anyway in the bag then)

KiwiLad says...

I guess with the toxic vtiriol pouring from the mouth of Cooper, doing very little for team morale, this was always going to be a tough day at the office for the Wallabies.

They were well beaten, at the breakdown, missing how many key loosies???

But well done Bokke, the only team in this comp to win a four try bonus point.

Trinats, wasnt it a clever move, having the out of form 4th best fullback in the world, step into flyhalf, he defended well, kicked well, and generally showed what a find he could be in that position.

Bokrocker says...

Zane played one of the best matches of his life. He was solid under the high ball, broke tackles and one weakness he had in the past, isolating himself ,was not evident. He looked like a proper Springbok Fullback. I did not fancy him myself but must admit he played above himself not forgetting the great talent , Lambie, competeing fr this crucial postion in the team. One area where we really shone was in the back line. Its clear that Steyn being dropped was inspired and to see the fly half break the line sent shivers down my spine. Yes. Its clear that the backline was starved and tonight they showed how hungry they are to run with the ball, how our backline can match both the Ausies and I believe the Kiwis as well. Sprinkboks taught the world running Rugby, good to see us return to what made us great once upon a time. Habana, when he is in form I and have no doubt , is the greatest winger in the world and good to see him break lines and dodge defenders like he did at the start of his career. Great game, sad t hear the Aussies suffered, but about time the Boks mauled the Wallabies and good luck to them on their journey to Argentina.

This is the true reflection of Wallabies. Such an embarrassing scoreline is expected when you have a hopeless captain like N. Sharpe. PR... you guys should still include him in your dream team of the week. N.Sharpe and R. Deans both need kicks up their back.
