I'd rather not tackle any of them thanks, don't think my body particularly needs that...

In regards to stopping SBW and his offloads, well tackle him around the ankles and make sure the bloke he is giving the ball too is well marked too, not much else you can do really????

I though Trinuts (Walabies cougch coach) said this guy is not a good rugby player lol...

I'd rather not tackle any of them. in fact I doubt I could even get in position to try.

As the self-professed oracle of all things rugby, I felt it was time to wade in my my tuppence-worth.

The problem with him is what we're all taught at school: tackle around the ankles - they can't run if you've got 'em around the ankles - and the bigger they are, the harder they fall. Now that's absolutely fine, until the player learns to off-load like SBW. So you have to tackle him around the body and risk being handed-off, or run over. So you have to double-team him - one around the ankles and one to stop the off-load. And then that opens up gaps for Smith, Nonu, or who-ever it happens to be.

Luckily ABs can only put 15 players on at one time.

I'd rather tackle SBW than Nonu. And the likes of Fruean or SBW would give me equally sleepless nights. Who ever the ABs select at centre will be a great handful especially if the ABs forwards get on top.

that's fine, allocate two players for Williams, and leave Nonu un-marked. That cunning plan sure to work. So often headlines like this - 'shut down Genia', 'shut down Carter' etc - mistake for any team to become obsessed with one particular player. How many cunning plans were there when Lomu was at his peak?

@ Philly

I totally agree with you.

In rugby it's always a matter of skill rather than a matter of physicality (although having both helps).

Philly says...

Of course he can be tackled as can all players. But its what he does as he is tackled. Those subtle offloads are a nightmare for the opposition. And they are just beautiful to watch. SBW attacking skills are second to none. He may not have the rampage of Lomu or the speed of Howlett, but what he does is artistry.

passtheball says...

@ Springbokrugby - yes he can be tackled but the Sharks put two big men on him and it only worked from set play in the first 15 minutes. That marking leaves space for others anyway so he is a problem for all teams and Aus will be aware of this.

Springbokrugby says...

What a lot of nonsense! I think you'll find the Wallabies are preparing to meet the All Blacks, of whom Sonny Bill Williams may well be a team member, albeit and admittedly good and in-form team member.

Don't build this guy up into something he is not! He CAN be tackled, he CAN be stopped from scoring, and he CAN'T defeat the opposition entirely on his own!
