Chaps, it's not that I don't think he could have handled it in terms of not being good enough, he simply, literally, did not play enough rugby over the course of the season. I think he should have played more (and I also don't think Tigers should have let him leave), but it would have been irresponsible of the England team to play a player, even in the midweek games, who hasn't got enough rugby under their belt for the season.

@lawynd
I also disagree with you reference SA Tour, players need to play the best to become the best, he has had two seasons playing for the Saxons and he is the best English 12 in the Premiership hands down. I would have played him in the two midweek games and bought him off the bench in the last Test.
It will be interesting to see where he stands after what I expect will be quite a good season for the Cherry & Whites.

@ lawynd - I can't agree with the SA tour part, although the rest I understand. An international tour is a great place to "blood" new talent - that's really what the mid-week games should be all about. I'm not saying he was ready to stand at 12 against the Boks, but he wouldn't have taken a backwards step and may have given us a little more in attack. He's a big unit too and his defence isn't too shabby.
10 Burns (Farrell / Ford / Heathcote?)
12 Twelvetrees
13 Tuilagi
A pretty tasty combination...

He simply hasn't played enough rugby for a full call-up yet, and he underperformed with the Saxons this year. He's got the talent and hopefully he'll play week in, week out with Gloucester to realise that talent. Picking him for the tour of South Africa would have been like throwing him to the lions.

@Centre12... Couldn't agreee more, I really thought we would see him in the mix with England especially as we were battling a bit in the midfield, can't understand how he has been overlooked.

Im not sure who he has upset but its someone at the RFU, why he has been constantly overlooked by England I do not know, I thought that with SL at the helm, he would have been picked especially over the likes of Barrit, Turner-Hall and Hodgson, but then when he didn't get picked for the SA tour I was completely shocked.
Now as a Bath fan this is the one "Tigers reject" that we should have signed.
Billy I wish you all the best at Kingsholm and hopefully you will have cemented yourself in the #12 Shirt for England by the end of the season.
