New rules will apply for an ITM Cup pre-season match Taranaki v Waikato today. A few former and current ABs playing, incl Marty Holah back for Waikato, Beauden Barrett, Jarrod Hoeta and Jason Eaton. Hoeta unusually playing at 8 rather than lock, may be his position this year for when lock Craig Clarke returns from injury.

glad to see the 5 second rule implemented...I feel that ruck time had become really pedestrian and teams spent more time on setting attacking patterns as opposed to just playing the game...the time limit on conversions is also good - although Sexton will be up against it as he is one of the slower conversion takers in the game...

I always hated the 'crouch, touch, pause, engage' at scrum time as I genuinely believed that it was the cause of most of the scrum woes that we have seen creeping into rugby - players lost focus waiting round for the scrum to start...although I wonder are there any timings on how much time was wasted in setting and resetting scrums in games as I think it would be quite scary - in particular I am thinking of the passage of play at the end of the first half of the Rabo final when there was at least 8 minutes wasted...

Some are practical. Some are trying to rule on the tempo of the game based on some peoples opinions on what the spectator wants. Drop the latter, keep the former.

Practicality and safety and continuity should be the drivers for rule changes and prevention of changes. If a team wants 10 seconds from the back of the scrum or wants to play slow for the win their fans judge and that's their decision. I love to see different teams with different styles.

Control freek rule changers: the game is not yours to mess with!!

And if the ball isn't used after 5 seconds what happens ?

Having said that, there is nothing major here. And some of the measures to speed up the game (breakdown clearances, try conversions) are welcome.

Some people have noted, rightly in my opinion, that the scrum set has been changed just as most teams and refs have got used to it. There have been few re-sets this year.

@kappelange

I assume you are tired of all the law changes. I am too. I like the game; everyone gets used to playing it, reffing it, watching it, and it gets changed again because it wasn't working a year or two earlier. It's too much.

Maybe they could get the halfback to put the ball in straight? And go back to an old rule where, at scrum time, the halfback cannot go over the halfway mark. Then the No 8 can stay attached and the half can pass the ball out unhindered - simple.

5 second delay??

Hmm, I'm not sure some teams will be able to maintain their structure or organise their set of tactics properly if they HAVE TO play at speed.

how do you explain the rules of rugby to a newbie if the rules keep changing?

I like the one about not having to kick for touch again after a penalty at a 5 yard lineout. That did always seem pointless and also introduce an unnecessary risk for the kicker (albeit fairly small).

However, I don't understand what is meant about expanding the short arm penalty options for teams benefitting from a know on or throw forward into touch? Can anyone explain?
