Cant see it happening,England already has a proffesional 7s squad ,and Wales and Scotland are moving in that direction.A GB7s team would be something though.England are regually in the top 4 nations already and Wales are the current and i think will be the last world champons,so have some decent players and Scotland also have good players in 7s.Specalist 7s players only will feature in Rio

spam: sorry dude, you are of course correct. you know what its like with union though, its hardly ever GB, always England Scotland Ireland and Wales. My head was in a traditional 6n's place.
My overall message though was that 15-a-side professionals should butt out and leave the medal winning to the 7-a-side professionals who live and breathe Sevens. I bet NZ and Fiji will stick with their sevens stars. If we go for more popular names just to get a little more exposure then ultimately that exposure will be about team GB losing.

Irishlad. Agree. I would stick to 7s specialists. Just saying Goode and Ashton are not the first British 15s backs I would look at. Perhaps Rob Kearney was a bad example.
Like the idea of a British Lions 7s team that would tour and do the Olympics.

They might like the idea of getting picked, but the chances hopefully are nil. Different game where skill levels and outright pace are king. Few if any of the current British squads would get to play in an Olympics. Only those on the regular sevens circuit perhaps with the odd real sevens specialist now playing top level would be considered. The British sides are currently not in the top two on the sevens circuit and unless there is a change in basic skill levels then that is unlikely to change.

I remember the last lot of posts when it was announced 7s was going to Rio, everybody was picking their England team, Gollings was going to stay on ...blah, blah, blah.
The current world champions have some real talent ( Smith for one ) . These guys from Eng, Scot & Wales put in the time and effort and absolutely no way should players be picked from outside 7s squads. It has worked for Scotland before bringing in external squad players but on this occassion it surely is the 7s players' RIGHT.
On a seperate note I see that knob John Inverdale has started commentating at the rowing in the Olympics...all the rowers will become English now.

I agree with the posts below, I can't see the likes of Ashton being selected over a genuine 7s specialist like Dan Norton. There is a reason that top 7s players rarely make the switch to top level 15s and vice versa, because whilst there are obvious similarities they are ultimately different sports that require different things of the players. There's nothing to say Ashton and Goode wouldn't be really good, but why risk taking them at the expense of really good 7s players who play top level 7s tournaments on a regular basis?

markmassive, none of those bulked up 15-a-side players will cut it a whole tournament of two days. Just look at the Commonwealth Games, were only a few All Blacks were selected for the NZ sevens. If Ashton of Goode want to play at the Olympics, they will have to take part in a strict sevens regime for at least 4 months to get them in shape. And then there's the skill level... No chance.
Bums on seats isn't an issue, as Sevens has more than enough super stars

I don't understand why we'd offer places in the team to either of those two, or to any players not already associated with sevens; England currently have a 7s team that's amongst the best in the world and Scotland and Wales aren't bad either and have some talented individuals. Sorry to burst your bubble chaps, but this one is not for the likes of you.

At least it can't be a massive squad and all nations have the same issue. Less for Eng Scot Wales NIre as only one nation. Not sure Goode and Ashton would go ahead of the likes of Visser North and Kearney.

Seriously, within the next 4 years england will have out and out full time specialist 7's players and 15-a-side players shouldn't get a look in. If they do it'll be a money making decision to get bums on seats and it'll probably cost england any chance of winning a medal.
If we're serious about olympic gold then let's be professional about it and build a full time team.
