Carter drop breaks Irish hearts

All Blacks: Deny Irish at the death

Ireland turned up the heat in freezing conditions to push New Zealand all the way, before eventually succumbing to a 22-19 defeat in Christchurch on Saturday.

With the scores level at 19-19 and one minute remaining in the match, All Blacks pivot Dan Carter broke Irish hearts with a last-gasp drop goal to win the game and the series.

It was a valiant effort from the visitors, who led the world champions by one point (9-10) at half-time, but were left playing catch-up following an early try to Aaron Smith two minutes after the break.

But the men in green managed to claw their way back and when All Blacks full-back Israel Dagg was yellow-carded in the 72nd minute, Ireland were presented with a golden opportunity to retake the lead from 49m out.

However, Jonathan Sexton's attempt had the direction but not the distance as the ball fell agonisingly short. From there the hosts put themselves into a position to set up Carter for the match-winning drop.

His first attempt off his right boot, however, clipped an Irish hand and sailed wide. But Carter wouldn't miss the second attempt, and this time - off his left foot - sent the ball between the sticks.

Jubilation for the All Blacks, heartbreak for the brave Irish.

Declan Kidney's troops had promised they would up the intensity after being run off the park a week ago and they were certainly true to their word as the visitors - roared on by dozens of Irish fans - threatened to snaffle their first-ever Test win over the All Blacks in their 26th attempt.

Ireland supporters would have been choking on their Guinness after looking at the scoreboard to see the visitors 10-0 ahead in the opening quarter of the match thanks to an early try from Conor Murray and the boot of Sexton.

Ireland made the most of an early line-out close to New Zealand's line with brilliant effect, mauling the ball superbly before Murray - despite having no blindside support - made a dart to get the ball over for the try. Sexton added the conversion and nine minutes later he added his first penalty.

The All Blacks were able to put their first points on the board through a Carter penalty in the 21st minute. As in the first Test, Ireland went off the boil when the game headed into the second quarter and as New Zealand's intensity grew, the home side forced errors at the breakdown. This allowed Carter to add two more three-pointers that closed the gap even further.

The number ten had a chance to put his team in front on the stroke of half-time, but his fourth penalty attempt didn't have the legs and allowed Ireland to head into the half-time sheds 10-9 ahead.

That lead lasted just two minutes after the resumption before Smith grabbed his first Test try after a burst from Sonny Bill Williams. Williams crashed into the Ireland pack and as the All Blacks piled in, their livewire scrum-half was driven over the line for the try that Carter duly converted.

Any thoughts that the floodgates might open as they did in Auckland seven days ago, were dispelled as Ireland rallied with Sexton adding his second penalty in another strong attacking period that had the All Blacks scrambling to make try-saving tackles.

But with that storm weathered, the momentum again swung the other way and Carter's fourth penalty extended New Zealand's lead to 19-13.

Ireland then came back with two more Sexton penalties levelling the scores to set up a dramatic finale.

Pressure mounted on New Zealand as Adam Thomson joined Kieran Read on the injured list, leaving them only two specialist loose forwards. Dagg's sin-binning for a late charge on Rob Kearney didn't help matters either for the hosts.

But at 19-all and a man down, the All Blacks rallied one last time and fittingly, Carter - a Canterbury local - was there to hold his nerve and seal the outcome.

Man of the match: For New Zealand, Dan Carter was obviously the man of the moment thanks to his match-winning drop-goal. But it's hard to look past the gallant Irish who silenced their critics with a superb effort that came within fractions of the most famous Irish win in history against the world champions. And it's for that reason why we've opted for a collective award to the entire Ireland team.

Moment of the match: With 40 seconds of the match remaining, it has to be Carter's winning drop goal.

Villain of the match: Israel Dagg's brain implosion that so nearly cost his team defeat.

@lacroix, because becoming the man of the match of the final is the only reason the RWC is held right?

I believe Mr Kaplan has the honour of officiating in the most number of NZ losses.

Crazy having 2 or 3 grabs at McCaws face, not like the Irish to be dirty but they were in for the lot last week.

@ new_j4a... I live there & can assure you he's nothing like the blokes I work & socialise with: most are NRL and/ or AFL rather than "ra-ra" followers & very opinionated on their preferred sport(s) but never have I met anyone with such blatant disregard for the facts. Nothing wrong with a good yarn of course but trying to pass it off as some kind of truth is a tad dishonest don't you think & really no better than the "cheating ref, corrupt ref" sh1te that (rightly) gets you worked up from time to time...

@melkiwi and irish shirt pulling....too right.

to argue that the ABs have not deserved both their wins is to ignore the facts of the games. ireland cannot expect to compete when there are so many weaknesses in their front five, and such poor decision making at 9 and 10. the ABs were poor last weak- but still deserved to win.

Similar incident on Jamie Heaslip during the match: http://i48.tinypic.com/2j5mc74.png

By the way if people are going to point out the McCaw incident, they should probably mention the one on Heaslip too and be more even-handed in there criticisms. 57th minute.

@melkiwi

Did you not notice the ABs doing something very similar at almost every ruck? It goes both ways, my friend.

Looks like a definite rake there. He may have gotten him a few times across the face, but only one was in the eye area. Should have been cited though. Can't deny that.

@isthatrightref, I just assume that he's making stuff up...as long as you know its fiction, you can enjoy the art? He is one funny bugger though. I may visit Queensland soon just on the off chance that there is a whole province full of bullsh!tters like Trinats.

Another unforgivable assault goes unpunished. Did you see the marks on McCaws face in the immediate post match interview. No wonder he knocked on a couple of times. McCaw just keeps coming back for more, if ever the epithet of Captain Courageous applied, it applies to McCaw

@ new_j4a... a bit like your relentless campaign against the ref-bashers, eh? My knowledge of the Laws isn't deep enough to fight that particular battle so I'll leave it to those better-qualified & stick to pulling up the more blatant falsehoods spouted by the master baiter & others... as I've said many times, by all means have an opinion & feel free to express it but don't just make stuff up in support of it :-)

@isthatrightref, who says "claims..... he has lots & lots of kiwi & saffa mates who all think he's a hoot." I have never seen him claim this himself. I have seen several kiwi and saffa posters jump in to his defense...including me on several occasions. I do find him funny....and his predictions are often nothing short of psychic (predicted Ireland v AB last week almost to the exact score). I also find your relentless attempts to corner him a hoot....and the title you have conferred is brilliant...pure poetry. So keep it up guys....better than a Tom and Jerry cartoon.

@ bigb6969... another of the Master Baiter's traits is that when someone gives him the opportunity to substantiate his drivel (or, God forbid, admit to having made it up for the sake of posting something, anything, no matter how true or false) he will instead try to divert attention away from the original drivel by spouting yet more, even less-relevant drivel... oh and another trick when cornered is to claim it was all just a wind-up (his "!!!!" is a bit like Sheldon's "bazinga" only not as funny) & that really he has lots & lots of kiwi & saffa mates who all think he's a hoot... I think he works on the moving target theory but forgets that in zigging out of one line of fire he's often zagging into another...

Well, well , well, none of ther above and NZ (and islanders and Aussie !!) JUST win at HOME by a drop goal !!! Nuff said !!

@ bigb6969... last year I also researched the Master Baiter's claims re yellow cards in AB/ Wobbly matches & found that in the Deans era (RWC included) the AB played a man short on 5 occasions, Wobblies twice (albeit they got a double whammy in Melbourne (?) when Mitchell got a yellow in the 1st & a red early in the 2nd half). Gave some thought to researching the try count but didn't want to melt my abacus...

Also suggested that, what with SA being the "other" member of SANZAR, it was reasonable for SA refs to control most AB/ Wobbly fixtures & NZ refs the majority of SA/ Wobbly fixtures, while the absence of oz refs in SA/ AB matches is due largely to the absence of oz refs from the IRB ref panel...

In terms of AB v Ireland (pretty sure that's what this thread started as before it mutated) oldmate also claimed, shortly after the oz/ Ireland RWC match, that "only red cards & spear tackles" had prevented Ireland thus far defeating the AB: still waiting for this claim to be backed up, not holding my breath but...

You could say that, however you cannot take away the fact the the two games won by Australia were won with a try (O'Connor in HK !!! and Samo half the length of the field try in Briso) and not the with penalty after penalty !!!! Top points scorer in Tri nats, as the case with NZ (or red and yellow cards Mel - Drew Mitchel)

funny how irish fans have the cheek to call abs cheats when they were the ones constantly pulling the jersey of all blacks runners. One would have been a try had conrad smith been pulled back.

@ bigb6969... welcome to the world of the Brisabane master baiter: any fact that turns out not to be a fact gets re-written so as to prove his point e.g. wobblies always lose to AB with a saffa in charge... except when they win & the saafa ref in question becomes a home-town- as opposed to AB-favourer.

I seem to recall researching this last year & finding 2 NH refs in amongst the saffas during oz's 10-match losing streak v AB... can't be bothered doing it again but maybe you could have a quick look at your archive & confirm...

@Trinats2, you say..."What I think you misinterpreted is that I find it a strange FACT that out of the past 13 games Aus V NZ (home/away/neutral) Aus have won twice, both had (non saffa refs) and lost the other 11 (all Saffa refs)"

Given the relative strengths of the 2 sides, I'd say that this clearly indicates that the 2 non saffa refs were significantly biased against the ABs?

What I siad was that Jubes wasn't that bad, he just favours the home side, hence the AUS win in SYD (which is a home game for them !!!)
