Knockout blow: Canada and England draw does for New Zealand

Defending champions New Zealand are out of the Women's Rugby World Cup after England drew with Canada in their final pool game.

Fixtures/Results

Ireland 40-5 Kazakhstan
Spain 41-5 Samoa
England 13-13 Canada
Wales 35-3 South Africa
New Zealand 34-3 USA
France 17-3 Australia

The draw was enough to see England top Pool A, while Canada's two points saw them finish as the best runners-up, meaning they will face France in the semi-finals and England will take on Ireland.

Four-time champions New Zealand, meanwhile, faced the USA knowing that regardless of their result, they could not reach the last four, with just six points from their first two games.

It was a slow-burner in Pool A, with Canada scoring the opening try through Karen Paquin after an early Emily Scarratt penalty for England.

Scarratt added a second before the break as England led 6-5, but the Canadians came back strongly thanks to Kayla Mack's try.

Sarah Hunter's try 15 minutes into the second half put England back in front, only for Magali Harvey to knock over a late penalty to tie things up at 13-13.

Ireland had earlier booked their place in the last four for the first time when they cruised past Kazakhstan 40-5 to make it three wins from three.

The Irish, who had been so impressive in opening victories over the USA and New Zealand, did not have it all their own way in the early stages, leading just 7-5 late in the first half before Tania Rossier's 36th-minute try eased the tension.

Flanker Sharon Lynch had scored the first Irish try after just six minutes, but Kazakhstan hit back through Svetlana Karatygina midway through the half.

The second half started in similar fashion, with Kazakhstan frustrating the Irish at every turn, but eventually the pressure up front told.

A penalty try from a five-metre scrum made it 21-5, and Ireland followed that up with a long-range score for Siobhan Fleming before Lynch and Vicki McGinn added some gloss to the final score.

In the final game of the day hosts France faced their toughest test yet but eventually prevailed 17-3 against Australia to finish as the top qualifiers in the pool stages to set up a semi-final against Canada.

In the early stages it was the Australian backs who looked the more threatening, but French power up front began to tell at the end of the first half.

They were awarded a penalty try after pressure in the Australian 22, and in the second half they added a second try through skipper GaŽlle Mignot after some good work from the driving maul to lead 17-3.

Australia gave it everything to come back, but the French defence held them out ahead of a semi-final at Stade Jean Bouin on Wednesday.

New Zealand took some of their frustration at their World Cup exit out on the USA, racking up six tries in a 34-3 success, and they will now look go into the 5th-8th place play-off games, as will the Americans.

In Pool A Spain comfortably accounted for Samoa 41-5, with skipper Ana Maria Aigneren scoring two of their six tries.

And in Pool C Wales saw off South Africa 35-3 to finish third in the pool, with Sioned Harries scoring a hat-trick in the bonus-point success.
