Richie McCaw

100 Test victories: Richie McCaw

This week we will mostly be concerning ourselves with inimitable achievements, risky appointments, lifelines and an ironic twist...

That the records keep tumbling is little wonder considering the dominance of the All Blacks over the past few years. But there are some records that just might never be beaten.

Richie McCaw's performance in his 100th Test victory was far from vintage, but then he's given enough of those down the years that he's permitted a couple of off-days.

There are, right now, 21 players who have achieved the 100-Test milestone, in itself a remarkable achievement. But with the current advances in conditioning and the ever-increasing number of international games, there's been a rush on that milestone in the past couple of years. A couple more players - Keven Mealamu is set to be the next - will hit the magic marker in November and there's a few more in an illustrious queue who could crack it in the next twelve months.

But 100 Test victories? That really is something else. That's winning a number of international matches that only 21 people have thus far been lucky enough to survive long enough to play in.

It's a monumental achievement, a testament not only to McCaw's durability but also to the continued excellence of the team he has played for and led since stepping onto the field in Dublin and giving a man of the match display on his debut in 2001.

More is to come of course. Each time he steps onto the field he'll be setting a new benchmark. But the question we've been asking ourselves all weekend is whether this achievement will ever be matched?

We doubt it. But it's fitting that McCaw, who is a holder of so many shared achievements, a member of so many small and celebrated troops of players in terms of career milestones, now also has one that singles him out. The best player of his generation is now truly alone above all others.

The only question that now remains is whether he'll notch 100 Tests as skipper? 24 remain...

How paths differ. McCaw was made captain a couple of years after the coach who first picked him despite eight minutes of Super Rugby under his belt, John Mitchell, was offloaded by the All Blacks' hierarchy in the wake of the 2003 World Cup exit.

Since then, Mitchell's has been a chequered path. He's had some unenviable tasks, attempting to entrench rugby union in Western Australia with the Force and attempting to turn the defective Golden Lions back into one of South Africa's rugby forces.

He's had success. Lest we forget, his record as All Black coach was an 86 per cent winning one. The Force are now an established team in Super Rugby, even if not one of the top ones, and the Lions won the Currie Cup out of nowhere last year.

But everywhere he goes, the spectre of his tough approach follows him. He was stood down briefly from the Force position amid accusations of his authoritarian approach becoming way too dictatorial, he is currently suspended from the Lions on similar grounds. His All Blacks tenure ended in controversy too, amid rumours of internal rifts over his strange decision to drop Christian Cullen.

Mitchell now heads to Sale, where he has coached before. He will join an equally authoritative regime in Bryan Redpath and Steve Diamond. But is it a happy one? And more importantly, is the addition of even more military-command style coaching really what Sale, where the players are labouring under a lack of imagination and looking like the world rests upon their shoulders, need right now?

One coach who is probably mopping his brow and relievedly hitting a well-earned stress-relieving squash court right now is Robbie Deans.

Few have doubted Deans' abilities as a coach, but many have doubted the toughness of the connection between he and his battered squad over the recent weeks. At times, the players have looked out of sync, fed up and tired in equal measure. And of course, there's been the Quade Cooper tweets of the 'toxic' atmosphere behind the scenes and the restrictive game-plan.

Well, after Saturday's siege mentality victory, the pressure should be a little less. It was a team effort, a group of players determined to prove its detractors wrong, rather than one trying to work toxins out of its system and frustrated by its tactics.

Deans has earned a brief stay of execution - and the question is now pertinent: if there was a toxic atmosphere for Cooper, who was really causing it?

Ahhhh, the irony! As things stand with a game to go, it's the Blue Bulls who might end up bottom of the Currie Cup table.

Should they finish there - and there are still four teams who could do so, so it's no guarantee - that would pit them in a promotion/relegation playoff with the Southern Kings.

Which means the following scenario is likely:

1) One of South Africa's Super Rugby teams will be a Currie Cup second division team.

2) Given the Lions' current position at the top and their form, a non-Super Rugby team might well be domestic champions.

3) While the Kings enjoy their newly-manoeuvered status as South Africa's new focus of curiosity, it could be the Bulls, the flagship team of the recent successful era, who drop from the top tier domestically as opposed to the now non-Super Rugby Lions, making way for the Kings

Are we the only ones to see the irony in all of that?

Colin Meads and Don Clarke were also handy for NZ, in an era when the teams that made the (Whites only) trek to South Africa were likely to be told by the referee during play "that's not your ball for the put-in, it's ours."

So it's hard to compare, in an era when players were smaller, less aerobically fit, the referees weren't neutral, and the number of tests in a year was far fewer.

But that's for the pedants. McCaw is simply brilliant and has earned his accolades. A towering achievement.

@2eyedkiwi says..."They have rugby in the northern hemisphere now?? Awesome! " Well, eh, it looks a bit like rugby, but its much slower. I think that they must put weights in their boots so the ref can keep up. It's a bit like watching the U16 C's in the SH....lot's of dropped ball so that they can all lean against each other in a sort of scrum, but without any hit or power. Even Sincero is able to keep up (intellectually)

Well, Kiwi Kev... you were nailed on to win it, but in fairness, the Pumas are building, while the Wallabies and Boks are very shabby at the moment. The ratings lie.

That said, you should be congratulated on winning a trophy that Paddy O'Brien didn't need to organise for you. Well done.

European Cup back next week- the best club rugby competition in the world. (Six Nations in the spring- the oldest rivalries and friendships in rugby on show... so we got that going for us too.) A little coverage of European rugby, be it league or cup, would not have gone amiss, PR, instead of this bag of zeds.

@benski

Mealamu needs 15 more wins and Carter 19. They are the players still currently playing international that are closest to McCaw in test wins. Conrad is a little far off needing 44 and has only played 62 games for the ABs

Got to have a chuckle at some of the vitriol and dislike directed at Mccaw when you know he's pretty much a down to earth country boy that just happens be brilliant at rugby. Dudes a great team man and captain! Is always humble in winning and gracious in defeat. If you listen to his after match speeches he always acknowledges the opposition...which some teams often tactically refuse to do.. which is a standard procedure as they will talk about their own missed opportunities without recognizing there opposition win ..that's cool..they're competitors and dislike loosing. You find me an open side in the world whose MO is not to contest and attack rucks...Smith,Kronfeld,Heinrich,Pocock,Back,Waugh,Williams,Thierry..all good flankers in successful teams! just not quiet as good as McCaw! Obviously the easiest way to deny he' a great player is to discredit his achievements (from your couch..again and again) lol. He's the best of the modern era! hands down..the greatest?? time will tell

Heyneke Meyer pulled out a little story of how he took his son down to hopefully meet the ABs a few years back and Richie took him aside for 10 mins for a chat and gave him his boots, just an all round GC.

McCaw is the greatest player we have seen in rugby, a title he may well keep for a long time. Once he has retired (post RWC15 having successfully captained 2 RWC Trophies leading the only team to have defended the Cup and won 3 times - hey I am a Kiwi I can dream!) I think it will be easier for non-Kiwis to appreciate him. Especially when he is not frustrating the hell out of opposition players, coaches and fans at the ruck.

And Richard, 'not a vintage performance'? Certainly not his best but once again he was the AB's top tackler and 1st 3 to breakdown. Along with #3 on the carries count. Most loose forwards in international rugby would dream of a performance like that!

There seems that there is an increasing trend in English rugby of population distribution equalling team support and success. As the old industrial north begins to decline in population so too does the success of it's clubs: Newcastle down last season, Leeds the season before, Bristol (I think) two seasons before that and likely Sale this season whilst we've seen a resurgence in clubs down south with Exeter and London Welsh coming up strongly and Sarries then Quinns claiming the top prize in the prem. Obviously this is bad news for more Northern clubs eg: Sale, Northampton and Leicester but thankfully for Northampton and Leicester they act as beacons for fans of rugby in the midlands, east midlands and north midlands so still have great support.

Euro club rugby versus a competition amongst the top three and the Argies who I rate as better than their IRB ranking. Not much of a question as to what should be covered in this column...

McCaw, like Carter, is a humble country kid who loves playing rugby with his mates on a Saturday afternoon/evening. Pure and simple.

Great they are because they are consummate team mates, playing the ultimate team game for the world's most successful international team.

I look forward to following the rest of their respective journeys.

How about some news/opinion from the civilised side of the planet? Richie McCaw to John Mitchell to Robbie Deans to the Blue Balls... you do realise that people in Europe use this site too, and that there's rugby happening in the Northern Hemisphere, don't you?

Hummmmm --wait till the bulls get their players back from international service -- will be a different story ---

as for mcCaw -- never in the history of rugby has so much time been spent looking groggy on the wrong side of a ruck, and then seconds later legging it down the field- the absolute master of the rugby equivalent of `diving,` and he also has the ability to `hypnofrog ` the ref. refs just cant resist his cheeky little grin.

R.McCaws achivement wont be beaten not in many lfetimes i suspect, and you have to applaund him ,and his teams(though out his career) for that. Also his planned sabitical will hopefully allow him to build on it.One thing is sure though,he is the greatest player of this generation or ever imo,to play rugby.

J.Mitchells career has been chackered, and least we forget ,he helped England become the powerhouse they where in the late 90s and early 00s,as part of SCWs set up.aswell.That he is a good coach isnt really the question, its his man mageagement ,that seems to be his achilles heel,im pretty sure that QC would never have dared tweet his toxic nonsense if Mitchell was wallaby coach, even if it was true lol.If he could just get his man mangeagement right ,what a asset he would be to any team.Going to Sale is going to be interesting to say the least,3 tough no nonsense personnalities in Diamond ,Redpath and Mitchell,How they gell and work together is going to be the question regarding Sales success or failure imo.

R.Deans deserves to have a break ,his connstantly under pressure from the un realistic expectations of the australian press and fans imo.Every year every campaign its the same, with those who wont accept just how good a coach he is ,calling for his sacking. He must be seriously considering not extending his contract if offered later next year.,given the connstant crap he has to take..A series loss to the Lions wont help either,he must be praying he doesnt have injury problems next year on this years scale. As even with everyone fit ect, beating the Lions is no sure thing ,in fact its odds on they will lose really. But his so good he may beat the odds .Only time will tell.

LOL no PR you arnt the only ones to see the irony of the of the Blue Bulls or that the Lions look odds on to be domestic champions after losing their S15 berth.Pity didnt merge with the Cheetahs imo.

I mentioned on another thread that McCaw is up there with the true greats of their own sport, such as Lara and Schumacher. These are the people who we'll tell our children and grandchildren about; the "I was there when he..." stories.

Sale Sharks need somethign, but whether John Mitchell is that something, I don't know. I hope they get sorted, as they're a club with hitory and we need a Union presence in the North West.

Dingo escapes, eh? Let's see how he's doing at Christmas...

The Bulls in a promotion/relegation playoff with the Southern Kings - Cheeky must be smiling at that thought too!
