Super Rugby: XV of the play-offs

Made it: McLeod and Mtawarira

Now that the dust has settled after the Super Rugby play-offs, Planet Rugby looks at the players who stole the show in the knock-out round.

15 Israel Dagg (Crusaders): Of the four full-backs in action, Dagg stood out the most but this wasn't his best match of the season in the red and black jersey. Did enough, but could have done a lot more with the amble ball supplied by the under-par Morne Steyn. Opposite number Zane Kirchner didn't do too shabby at the back for the Bulls either.

14 JP Pietersen (Sharks): The classy winger turned heads once again with a sublime outing out wide in front of a shellshocked 36,500-strong crowd. Pietersen found the chalkdust for the opening try of the match and threw his body on the line multiple times on defence. It's pretty hard to argue that the Bok flyer is currently the hottest wing of the competition.

13 Paul Jordaan (Sharks): Relentless on attack and defence. It was intitially thought the Sharks would suffer somewhat without the influential Frans Steyn in midfield, but Jordaan stepped up to the plate magnificently and hit a home run. Also bagged a super try for his efforts.

12 Ryan Crotty (Crusaders): Is starting to become a regular in our weekly XV, and based on this performance it's easy to see why. Crotty was an imposing presence in the Crusaders' midfield with ball in hand and refused to yield as he carved the Bulls to shreds.

11 Digby Ioane (Reds): The shining light in an otherwise rudderless Reds back-line. Ioane threatened every time he touched the ball and would've got it more had it not been for some brutal defence from the Sharks.

10 Dan Carter (Crusaders): Once again left his mark on a match after contributing 23 points from the boot in what was a near-flawless kicking performance, whilst the world's best pivot also orchestrated matters superbly on attack.

9 Charl McLeod (Sharks): Saved his best display in a Sharks jersey for when it counted most. Mcleod's job was probably made easier when opposite number Will Genia was shifted to fly-half, but take nothing away from a polished performance that included a match-clinching intercept try.

8 Richie McCaw (Crusaders): In his 11th season of Super Rugby, the Crusaders skipper was monumental - even by his incredible standards. Indeed, Crusaders' supporters are certainly resting easier at night following McCaw's impact in the less familiar position where his ball carrying was particularly strong.

7 Marcell Coetzee (Sharks): The Springbok flank blunted the Reds' attacking intent after making a whopping 16 tackles. Even more impressive for the Sharks' brick wall, was the number of tackles missed: zero.

6 Keegan Daniel (Sharks): Once again, Daniel was his inspirational self as he led his team to a historic win in Brisbane. Daniel was also a Trojan on defence after putting in 22 hits, and was responsible for setting up Jordaan's try in the first half.

5 Luke Romano (Crusaders): Played in the number four jersey for the Crusaders, but switches to five in our XV. The former cricketer continues to bowl us over with his energy rate around the pitch after making 12 tackles, whilst he was once again a tower of strength at line-out time.

4 Willem Alberts (Sharks): John Plumtree's decision to play his Bok flank at lock was vindicated thanks to Alberts' powerful performance at the collisions and breakdowns. He constantly put the Reds' forwards under pressure at the rucks and forced several turnovers, while he also gained most metres with ball in hand than any other lock over the weeekend.

3 Owen Franks (Crusaders): Franks owned the scrum as he huffed and puffed and blew the Bulls pack down. Surpringsly though, he's been rotated with brother Ben for Friday's semi-final against the Chiefs...

2 Bismarck du Plessis (Sharks): Dominant in every facet of play for the Sharks - Du Plessis bullied his hosts into submission and also coupled brains with braun after showing good hands to set up Pietersen's try.

1 Tendai Mtawarira (Sharks): We didn't hear the familiar screams of 'Beeeeeeeeeeast' every time Mtawarira got his hands on the ball - which was a lot - partly due to the home crowd's stunned silence. But we're sure his fans were letting rip back home at the site of the Bok prop in full flight. Interestingly, Mtawarira made more than double of metres gained by any other front-rower over the weekend (Bismarck du Plessis was next best).

AVP1, I think Trinats means being put in the stocks or prison when he refers to justice for Quade.

Common assault or burglary charges that have both gone unpunished..

Yes, three weeks for Cooper and a great tackle from anyone else !

@ billybob - I think we're in agrement and thanks again for your answers.

@ Trinats2 - I agree that Cooper deserves proper justice. I felt it was worth at least a three week ban.

Pretty good team. was really impressed by the Sharks performance, ok admit I wanted them to beat the Reds, did they ever, but Bismarck and co. were pretty damn good as were Richie and co., Sharks v Crusaders final would be the icing on the cake.

Not sure why Ioane is in there, he only touched the ball twice. No Red player deserved to be in there, probably one of their worst performances of year (and they have had a few, losing to the Bulls and Force and throwing away a 17 point lead against the Sharks). Them's the breaks

JUSTICE 4 COOPER !!!!!

I quite agree with kpe12 there about George Whitelock. Not the fanciest of player but he does the job very well. Very very strong in defence and his stand-offs are also superb.

Bit surprised he hasnt received a recall to the ABs yet.

@ Ed

What about having posters team of the week?

I am sure it would be more interesting, Let's go social and be creative, this hopefully would get rid of of poor posters

APV1 well then why did you ask the question. It's actually not about getting your two best locks on the field it's about getting a pair which work best together. And as we now know Back, hill and dalligo formed one of the best and most balanced back row in the world

Posted 19:57 24th July 2012

APV1 says...

@ billybob - thanks for that. But, essentially, it's more important to get your two best locks on the field than to worry about the number on the back? Much like Richard Hill's article which stated that he, Backy and Dallaglio didn't necessarily perform the "traditional" 6, 7 and 8 roles - they had complimenting skills.

APV1, yes there actually is a difference, a four normally jumps at 2 in the line out, they tend to be a bit heavier and more of a bruiser. Whilst a 5 tend to be a bit taller and more of a line out expert and less of a ball carrier. There are certain difference such as which side of the scrum they pack down on, but that could be personal preference. But it most cases team either select their best two locks, or the best two who complement each other. ie Victor Matfield (5) and Bakkies Botha (4). Luke Ramano (4) Sam Whitelock (5), O Callaghan (4) O Connel (5) Leo Cullen Normally wears (5) for Leinster, Martin Johnson was a (4) I could go on for a while here

Kankowski ahead of Richie (is that blasphemy coming from a die hard Crusaders fan?).

Pietersen is working his way to player of the tournament.

Also I think there should be more credit for George Whitelock, he is having another standout season doing his job under the radar (check out how many turnovers this guy forces by holding opposition up and waiting for the cavalry).

The Chiefs and Stormers didn't play on the weekened.... but these two teams will be up against the Crusaders and Sharks this weekend. It is not surprising to see the composition of the XV that was picked this week. Of course it is the associated comments accompanying the selections that are also important.... the Sharks really did play well against the Reds. They squeezed the life out of the Reds.... 8 Sharks, 6 Crusaders and 1 Red... is probably a fair reflection of what was on display in the two quarter final matches. What was disappointing was the performance of the Bulls.

APV1 says...

I suppose, considering their mediocrity, this is as good as we can expect. The sub-par skill level of the players in these four teams in particular, was glaringly obvious.

Phew! Now that's out of the way.

On a different note, who can tell me what the difference is between 4 and 5? Is there one? When I've played it's made no difference, but the level I've played at isn't quite up there with the professionals.

Anyone?

Anyone..?

Good 15, you can see why the sharks are my favourite team of the 4 involved over the last weekend, my only query is 9 where genia was still better than his opposite number for the few minutes he played there, the sharks scrum half was very loose at points in the first half.

I'd have Ludik ahead of Dagg, and Guildford in for Ioane. Apart from that, thumbs up!

Good choices overall.

While Marcel was good, Liam Gill was better.
