USA FLAG

Oh say can you seeeee....

This week we will mostly be concerning ourselves with promotions of all kinds...

The English Premiership will next year be festooned with a new name after all, following the success of London Welsh's appeal against their non-promotion at the end of last season.

It's certainly a victory for common sense and fairness, although now the decision has taken until July 1 to fall it ends up being somewhat harsh for Newcastle as well, who have to tear up their plans - and doubtless a few contracts - for the season ahead. Again, the assertion must be made: this process must never take this long again.

Maybe it won't, or to be more precise, maybe there won't ever be one. The judgement by an independent panel to overturn the 'minimum standards' decision has set a precedent for the promotion criteria to be closely-examined and possibly even scrapped ahead of next season.

Geoff Irvine, chairman of the Championship clubs, says it is time for change.

"The decision brings into question the whole principle of the criteria," Irvine told the Telegraph. "Forget the primacy of tenure. What I hope will come out of this is a pure and simple thing - whoever wins the Championship will be promoted, warts and all.

"Instead of Premiership Rugby trying to denigrate them because they haven't got their facilities right, they should give the clubs some time to get their facilities in order and also try to help them do it.

"This decision is a great step forward for English rugby and I hope it is accepted in the spirit it was intended."

But back to promotions... so now London Welsh need to get a few big names in to both bolster the squad and bring the masses flocking to Oxford.

But Gavin Henson? He of misbehaviour on flights and trains, of inane celebrity commitments, of undoubted potential but of limited mental power to help carry it through?

A wide boy of Welsh heritage, Henson rather epitomises the name of the club. But he will come at a cost and with a lot of baggage. After all the Exiles' hard work, is that really what they need on the eve of pre-season? Not according to a few coaches we've spoken to.

But he will bring some bums to seats. It's tough not to see the Exiles' courtship of Henson as more than a very public effort to bring a very high-profile name to the team the day after promotion became a reality.

Meanwhile over the pond, rugby is basking comfortably in the immense heat of this year's US summer.

All three June Tests were screened live on network television including the defeat to Italy in Houston which saw two USA players sent off for NFL-style no-arm hits on their opposite numbers.

A shame, but the numbers in attendance - in sweltering Texas heat - also don't lie: people are beginning to take rugby more seriously.

A lot of that is down to the IRB's efforts to help a willing USA promote itself, more is down to the success of Sevens and its impending jump into the Olympic arena in 2016. The USA are the reigning Olympic champions after all.

So it was with immaculate timing that the USA's little piece of unique rugby history was very visibly celebrated late last week as the IRB inducted the 1920 and '24 Olympians into their hall of fame - a hall of fame membership is a prized piece of American culture in any discipline.

Rounding off the tidal wave of good news sweeping the USA was a home win in Saturday's Junior World Trophy against Japan, a win which takes the USA youngsters to France next year and the challenge of the Junior World Championship.

Murray Park in Salt Lake City was rammed full for all the match days, network television again covered it all, not to mention the live streaming on the internet.

USA Rugby CEO Nigel Melville praised the IRB for bringing the event Stateside.

"The JWRT has made a great difference to Rugby in America," he said.

"It has raised the profile of the Game, particularly in Utah, and has left an important legacy that we will capitalise upon in the coming years. I would like to praise the vision shown by the IRB in awarding the staging of the tournament to USA Rugby and thank them for demonstrating the faith in us to deliver."

"It's an exciting time for Rugby in the USA. It continues to develop and grow stronger. Being able to attract international events like the JWRT to our shores certainly helps us in that process."

The Americans are coming...

The answer to improving rugby in the USA is putting the bulk of the effort into the youth levels of the sport, including coaching and refereeing. Once we have a generation who grew up playing rugby we'll be much more competitive against the top tier nations. It also would add to our overall esteem to have American born and trained refs overseeing major tournament matches. I support the Eagles 100% but my fellow Americans on here should probably chill out on the "we're coming to dominate" talk for a while. We can't even beat our friendly neighbors to the north on a regular basis so I don't think we're going to make anybody in a black shirt nervous anytime soon. Let's take it step by step and enjoy the progress as it happens, starting with our U-20's recent success. Also focusing on 7's is, in my opinion, not beneficial to the 15's game.

Alot of very sensable posts here ,on why it will take time for the USA to become a major rugby nation. The skill sets for American football and rugby are very different ,in all positions, not just in the forwards .But lets hope america can and will develop those skills ,as rugby is imho a better sport to watch even than NFL football overall,to much stop and go for my liking really

@ KubilaKhan - why just England?

Agree Rohan.

The argument over the sport is stupid. Tell me any rugby player that could go to NFL and play QB?

Rugby will never work in the USA

It will never get the numbers to compete with the NFL MLB or NBA.

Best bet would be develop if in collage where it has a alot more interest. If it did tho and people did take rugby seriously then there would be a new super power on the block.

rohan1992 says... So I was reading from the bottom up having a good laugh, until I hit your post. You are right on the money mate! Finally someone who isn't just spitting out bollocks about how the US are going to take over rugby world without any substantial reasoning or a plan, other than we're American that is... all rah rah booyah crap. USA will improve and possibly become world beaters, only if the game is rolled out at all schools (middle school min) and offered up as a legitimate alternative to American Football. Even then it will take a generational change for parents to encourage their kids to play, not until it becomes as immersed as Football, basketball, and baseball will the USA develop players that have rugby intuition and when this happens, it will be the starting point to greatness. The parents need to encourage the kids and not just the odd couple either,, it needs to be played in the neighborhood parks and on school grounds during breaks. Kids need to go for a rugby ball first when they go to the park to play. In my opinion the USA are at the very least decades away from being world cup contenders and only then if things change as prescribed above.

@fozza... Take a look at the individual players in the USA side...a lot of them ARE former college football players, in fact is has only been in the last decade that the team hasn't been completely dominated by former grid-iron players, and if you ask me the team has improved! Yes the outside backs would pay to have experience in Grid-iron as kick returning, receiving and rushing are easily transferable to Rugby, but the forwards are the downside, especially the front row and loose forwards who need to have developed specific skills from a younger age. I'm not arguing as to which sport takes more skill (I've played both, and couldn't tell you which required more talent) all I'm saying is can we please drop the idea that the USA team will improve by taking reject athletes who didn't make it in their desired sport, and start developing genuine Rugby players from a young age...believe me that is when the sleeping giant will truly awaken.

Very good news from the USA that rugby is growing there, and that finaly the TV networks are airing it .The IRB has now started to ask the major nations to tour in the USA. Canada, and soon England .Wales ,maybe even New Zealand ect will tour there .This hopefully will raise the standard of both the USA and Canada in the comming years .Much as it has for Argentina in the past. There is alot of untapped potential players ,and considering that people can make a good living from Lacross there a veru minority sport ,why not rugby. Also now that the JWRT has gone stateside ,Lets follow it up with the JWC asap, and even maybe the RWC in 2027.Stadia wont be a problem as alot of college stadia easily surpass AP or Top14 ones even now,and lets face it the USA is a great place to vist ect without the RWC ,so by defiantion would be even better with.

As to London Welsh i really do hope the critea BS is scrapped ,as has already been pointed out alot of premiership atm fail it

All they need to do now is start producing the goods on the field. Im sure its not only me that thinks, despite constantly hearing about how the game is growing rapidly in the US, they don't ever seem to get any better. But never mind about any of that because the crowds are starting to turn up and the TV networks are tuning in!

I pity the London Welsh centre who helped get the side promoted. Imagine losing your first team place to a runt like Henson. This modern celeb-obsessed world has left me behind for sure.

I agree with Fozza, having played football before rugby I have seen the physicality that gridiron brings. If it could transfer to rugby...well we'll see.

@sextons_on_fire - Well yea! If thats a jib at overseas internationals though...c'mon man, look at England.

fozza says...

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the untapped potential of former college American Football players is huge and the sooner rugby is seen as an honest alternative to Grid iron the sooner the yanks take over the rugby world!!!

As for Henson, would he really cost that much? Did i miss all the other teams battering at his door?

aah Sexton's_on_fire but the question everyone wants to know was whether it was purchased in the Munster region.

RFU - please learn from this. As has been suggested many times, echoed by Geoff Irvine, "...they should give the clubs some time to get their facilities in order and also try to help them do it."
