Richie McCaw

100 Test victories: Richie McCaw

This week we will mostly be concerning ourselves with inimitable achievements, risky appointments, lifelines and an ironic twist...

That the records keep tumbling is little wonder considering the dominance of the All Blacks over the past few years. But there are some records that just might never be beaten.

Richie McCaw's performance in his 100th Test victory was far from vintage, but then he's given enough of those down the years that he's permitted a couple of off-days.

There are, right now, 21 players who have achieved the 100-Test milestone, in itself a remarkable achievement. But with the current advances in conditioning and the ever-increasing number of international games, there's been a rush on that milestone in the past couple of years. A couple more players - Keven Mealamu is set to be the next - will hit the magic marker in November and there's a few more in an illustrious queue who could crack it in the next twelve months.

But 100 Test victories? That really is something else. That's winning a number of international matches that only 21 people have thus far been lucky enough to survive long enough to play in.

It's a monumental achievement, a testament not only to McCaw's durability but also to the continued excellence of the team he has played for and led since stepping onto the field in Dublin and giving a man of the match display on his debut in 2001.

More is to come of course. Each time he steps onto the field he'll be setting a new benchmark. But the question we've been asking ourselves all weekend is whether this achievement will ever be matched?

We doubt it. But it's fitting that McCaw, who is a holder of so many shared achievements, a member of so many small and celebrated troops of players in terms of career milestones, now also has one that singles him out. The best player of his generation is now truly alone above all others.

The only question that now remains is whether he'll notch 100 Tests as skipper? 24 remain...

How paths differ. McCaw was made captain a couple of years after the coach who first picked him despite eight minutes of Super Rugby under his belt, John Mitchell, was offloaded by the All Blacks' hierarchy in the wake of the 2003 World Cup exit.

Since then, Mitchell's has been a chequered path. He's had some unenviable tasks, attempting to entrench rugby union in Western Australia with the Force and attempting to turn the defective Golden Lions back into one of South Africa's rugby forces.

He's had success. Lest we forget, his record as All Black coach was an 86 per cent winning one. The Force are now an established team in Super Rugby, even if not one of the top ones, and the Lions won the Currie Cup out of nowhere last year.

But everywhere he goes, the spectre of his tough approach follows him. He was stood down briefly from the Force position amid accusations of his authoritarian approach becoming way too dictatorial, he is currently suspended from the Lions on similar grounds. His All Blacks tenure ended in controversy too, amid rumours of internal rifts over his strange decision to drop Christian Cullen.

Mitchell now heads to Sale, where he has coached before. He will join an equally authoritative regime in Bryan Redpath and Steve Diamond. But is it a happy one? And more importantly, is the addition of even more military-command style coaching really what Sale, where the players are labouring under a lack of imagination and looking like the world rests upon their shoulders, need right now?

One coach who is probably mopping his brow and relievedly hitting a well-earned stress-relieving squash court right now is Robbie Deans.

Few have doubted Deans' abilities as a coach, but many have doubted the toughness of the connection between he and his battered squad over the recent weeks. At times, the players have looked out of sync, fed up and tired in equal measure. And of course, there's been the Quade Cooper tweets of the 'toxic' atmosphere behind the scenes and the restrictive game-plan.

Well, after Saturday's siege mentality victory, the pressure should be a little less. It was a team effort, a group of players determined to prove its detractors wrong, rather than one trying to work toxins out of its system and frustrated by its tactics.

Deans has earned a brief stay of execution - and the question is now pertinent: if there was a toxic atmosphere for Cooper, who was really causing it?

Ahhhh, the irony! As things stand with a game to go, it's the Blue Bulls who might end up bottom of the Currie Cup table.

Should they finish there - and there are still four teams who could do so, so it's no guarantee - that would pit them in a promotion/relegation playoff with the Southern Kings.

Which means the following scenario is likely:

1) One of South Africa's Super Rugby teams will be a Currie Cup second division team.

2) Given the Lions' current position at the top and their form, a non-Super Rugby team might well be domestic champions.

3) While the Kings enjoy their newly-manoeuvered status as South Africa's new focus of curiosity, it could be the Bulls, the flagship team of the recent successful era, who drop from the top tier domestically as opposed to the now non-Super Rugby Lions, making way for the Kings

Are we the only ones to see the irony in all of that?

@APV1. if you wanna join the PFJ, you've got to REALLY hate the Romans. I do already. Oh yeah, how much? A LOT.........right, you're in then.

Hmmm, I wonder if this is what the backroom HCup negotiations are like :-)

@Rosbif, if that is a sniff of "running with the foxes and hunting with the hounds" that I smell on the air, then I am disappointed....and what is this "common enemy" crap? You surely don't support all the anti-English crap this idiot spews? What about the "Joubert is a cheat" or "the RWC was rigged" stuff? I am disappointed.

@APV1, I agree though I have fallen into that trap myself. I'm an Irishman myself, but its scum like this knacker that make me unwilling to admit it.

@osinlondon, Well said. But remind me, what was the score in the last test between Ireland's finest and the poor people of that little island down dere called New Somethingorother? Was it 60 to nil, bejaysus? And which team got the 60, doya say? God, its no wonder them knackers from Leinster are bitter.....they haven't backed a winning side since the last World War....before that even, now that i remember which side dey was pulling for in dat one.

Sincero

"Wallabies and Boks are very shabby at the moment. The ratings lie."

You're right of course. After all, the Wallas beat the Grand Slam 6N champs 3-0 (I'm sure it didn't count for some reason), Ireland lost 3-0 to the ABs (but I'm sure the 2nd game was the only "true" indication of the difference between the teams), and England managed a draw and 2 losses in SA.

Since then the NH teams haven't played... but you're right, clearly the NH teams should be ranked much higher than SA and Aus. The results don't lie.

I live in the UK and love the 6N and HC and Premiership, and it is a little annoying/embarrassing when SH types comment when they know nothing about the NH game... but no more annoying/embarrassing than NH types who claim superiority to SA and Aus simply because the ABs beat them. The rankings don't lie and neither do the results they are based on.

When NH teams start beating SH teams in their own back yard consistently, the rankings will change. Until then... suck it up.

I apologise in advance for any typos or misspelling.

@ new_j4a - I made a decision a short while ago to ignore him, due to the fact that he's (or she's) obviously just a troll. However, it genuinely concerns me when people correct typos and mistakes. They have no idea how challenging it can be for someone to post on a forum - dyslexia, foreign language, etc - and to ridicule them borders on bullying.

We all type quickly and often make mistakes and most of us will defend critisism or ignore it. But there are those who might be genuinely put off posting, hence me getting involved.

I'm not some self-proclaimed Forum Police, nor on a crusade, just want to get people involved and not have them put off.

He'll probably come back with some scathing and hilarious insult and blame everything on England, or some other daftness. But even if he ignores me, perhaps others will think twice before getting so pedantic.

@APV1, Thanks for the support. No dyslexia, just 20 years in the U.S. and a Microsoft spell checker. I just read some of Sincero's other postings. He's the rugby equivalent of a Holocaust Denier and an admirer of that sleazy, dishonest excuse for a journalist and complete waste of otherwise useful oxygen Matty Williams. I think that Sincero may be BokvanDumb reincarnated as a thicker than usual Leinster supporter.

@ Sincero - stop being a nob. English isn't the first language of many posters on here; some English people suffer with difficulties, such as dyslexia; and others just make mistakes.

Whilst new_j4a is quite cabable of replying to your post, by ridiculing these errors, you might make people less confident stop posting on the forums (or is it fora..?).

To correct every grammatical, punctuation and spelling error just make you look like an unkind and stroppy pedant.

Posted 08:52 11th October 2012

new_j4a says...

@Sincedro, Not true in American English. Absolutely correct that "practise" is the verb in the pedantic echelons of England, and more commonly of Ireland where the extremes of inferiority complex mean that the inhabitants of Leinster, for example, try very hard to be more English than the English. You have, after all, had a lot of practice with your English usage, especially when sending requests for another infusion of cash?

Posted 08:22 11th October 2012

Sincero says...

Practise as a verb has an S in it, mate... Just remember: it's not a complex if you are actually inferior, as you clearly are.

@Sincero, homage accepted....you may now rise and scuttle away, bowing vigorously, to practice your grovelling in private.

Richie McCaw certainly deserves to be named the greatest in rugby simply based on his 100 TEST wins alone. His influence on the AB's can't be ignored and many in NZ would already agree that he is simply the best.

Sadly however, his contribution to rugby is not as well received outside NZ and for this reason the 'Greatest' title will probably elude him.

Robbie Deans has performed miracles with the resources and players he's had available to him. Interestingly though, after the 2007 RWC McCaw says in his book that he preferred Henry, Hansen & Smith as AB coaches rather than Deans.

new_j4a says...

@Sasquatch, long time since we heard from you! All well? IMO the Boks have a perfect opportunity to start building on that young talent. I hope HM is the man for the job (would love to have Deans). ABs have shown us that there is daylight between irb number 1 and the rest. I am more worried about Oz rugby than the Boks. We need them to build with us. It won't help SH rugby if they fire their excellent coach and drop down to number 5 or 6 (even if we got Deans as a result, which is unlikely). So I think SH rugby is in great shape, but it is the Kiwis who are way out ahead showing the way. We shouldn't lose up north. but I would prefer to lose and grow some young players than stick with the old tired players and game plan (Lambie starting at 10 against Ireland and England for example would be great...or EJ for that matter)

Best player of this era / ever? Certainly one of the top 2, but I'm always hard pressed to decide who is the better overall player out of McCaw and Carter. Both have been a big loss to both NZ and Canterbury when they haven't been present and both are extremely rounded rugby players with very few weaknesses.

Carter already had his sabbatical and has played 21 matches less than McCaw with 19 less wins - the question is if he'll catch up those 21 matches or not, as most will be wins.
