Who's hot...and who's not!

Hot or not feature image

Aaron Smith is really hot while Piri Weepu is definitely not

It is time for Planet Rugby's weekly wrap of who has their name in lights right now...and who is making the headlines for the wrong reasons...

They're smokin'!

Bryan Habana and Aaron Smith: The Test between the All Blacks and Springboks in Dunedin produced two solo five-pointers of great calibre. Bryan Habana's effort for the Boks deserves a special mention as he created something out of nothing and scored one of the best tries of the tournament. The speedster's touchdown was extra special as under the current Bok game-plan, he hardly gets the ball from a well executed back-line move. Smith's effort, although not as spectacular as Habana's, came shortly after he joined the action from the All Blacks' bench. His try and subsequent display also redeemed himself after he was dropped from New Zealand's starting XV for disciplinary reasons.

Pumas: Despite being the only team in the Rugby Championship that haven't won a game yet, Argentina's performances have been of a high standard throughout and they are certainly making their presence felt against the three southern hemisphere heavyweights. Last weekend they gave the Wallabies a scare by racing into a lead before losing narrowly on the Gold Coast. After their draw against the Springboks and holding the All Blacks for 60 minutes, their most recent result proves even more that they deserve their place in the Rugby Championship.

London Welsh: Taking their cue from los Pumas, the Premiership debutants showed they can hold their own against the big boys by seeing off Exeter's challenge to claim their first league win since being promoted. Credit to coach Lyn Jones who had little time to prepare his troops after they only found out at the end of June that they've won promotion thanks to an RFU appeals process after they were originally deemed not to meet the required off-field standards for the Premiership.

Scarlets: Under the guidance of new coach Simon Easterby the Scarlets have made a flying start in the PRO12 and are unbeaten after three matches. After starting their campaign with a convincing win at home against Leinster, they claimed a deserved - albeit narrow - away win over Glasgow Warriors before notching another impressive away victory over Connacht last weekend. Ulster, also unbeaten, are in hot pursuit on the table but the Scarlets have a two-point lead thanks to some crucial four-try bonus points.

Griquas: The men from Kimberley are the form team in the Currie Cup after beating the Golden Lions, Sharks and the Blue Bulls in successive matches. Those three teams are traditionally amongst the more fancied teams in the competition but Pote Human's charges have shown little respect for reputations and are now genuine contenders for a spot in the semi-finals. What makes their achievement even more remarkable is that they lost their opening four matches of the tournament!

Taranaki: Although they are in second spot on the ITM Cup table, Taranaki are the only unbeaten side in the competition and they have played one match less than Wellington who are above them. Taranaki are also the current Ranfurly Shield holders and have seen off three challengers for New Zealand's famous Log o' Wood from Tasman, Hawke's Bay and Canterbury in recent weeks.

Toulon:After another victory over Montpellier, Toulon are the only unbeaten side in the Top 14 after five rounds of matches. Four of those wins have come away from home which shows that Bernard Laporte's side are serious about going one better after finishing as runners-up to Toulouse last season.

Get these guys a cup of warm soup!

Springbok goal-kickers: It was a night to forget for South Africa's goal-kickers whose poor kicking game cost them a rare victory on Kiwi soil. The normally accurate pivot Morne Steyn slotted over one penalty but missed three others in the first half alone while his namesake Francois also missed two long-range penalty attempts, which would have seen the tourists go into half-time 18-5 up instead of 5-3 down. it didn't get any better in after the break - the two Steyns' and replacement fly-half Johan Goosen combined to add to South Africa's kicking woes.

Piri Weepu: With Smith dropped to the bench it meant that Weepu had a golden opportunity to cement his place in the All Blacks starting XV. The 62-Test veteran, however, failed to take his chance and delivered a below-par performance. It's a far cry from 2011 when the 29-year-old was New Zealand's hero during their triumphant World Cup campaign.

Dean Greyling: It's going to take a long while before the Bok prop is allowed out of the doghouse following his "cheap shot" on Richie McCaw. Not only did the replacement front-rower spend 10 of his 30 minutes off the bench on the naughty chair, but gave away a string of penalties and dropped the ball with New Zealand's try-line under his nose. It must have been a very long flight back home...

Blue Bulls: It's been a difficult season for coach Pine Pienaar and his players who are currently the bottom-placed team on the Currie Cup table. Unfamiliar territory for the Pretoria outfit and their supporters who are used to challenging for honours. Last weekend's loss to Griquas is their third on the trot after going down to the Golden Lions and arch rivals Western Province. In the clash against Griquas they didn't know what hit them and were trailing 0-26 at the half hour mark.

sorry APV1 and new_j4a.... PR seems to have skipped my prior post so the banjo comment is a little out of context!

I was just saying the whole grammar and capital letters discussion had me in stitches. haven't laughed so much since the Monty Python days. hence the banjo post. to be honest, the Piranha brothers sketch may be more appropriate..... with the "merciless use of sarcasm, dramatic irony, metaphor, bathos, puns, parody, litotes and satire." ouch. that's gonna hurt in the morning :-)

@ new_j4a - glad you survived! I can't remember the minute, but it was obvious enough to an eejit like me, so you should see it. I seem to remember it being replayed too.

Don't get me wrong, his try was amazing. But this just took the shine off his performance for me and I would have listed him in both "Hot" and "Not".

@APV1 just back from the bush so have yet to watch the game. Your comment re Habana and cheating, will it be obvious or can you specify the minute? Your stories about what you and your uncle Jack get up to when you are bored had me weeping with laughter. On your point "As such, if you're writing a list you have to use commas instead," I haven't checked with Billie Strunk, but I suspect that you'll find that he advocates the use of commas to separate elements of a list except in those very unusual cases where each element is and independent clause or each element is itself a list (separated by commas). Oh and by the way, South Africa over Australia by 15+ points on the 29th.

APV1 says...

@ daibok - I think you're underestimating the importance of grammar: it's the difference between knowing you're sh!t and knowing your sh!t.

And don't forget the appropriate use of Capital Letters: it's the difference between helping your Uncle Jack off a horse and helping your uncle jack off a horse.

;-)

Gentlemen. I think we can live without semi-colons. Particularly those as erudite as JayStar and APV1.

As for Greyling - I dont know what he was doing there in the first place. Every Curry Cup province has at least one prop who is as good as Greyling and less of a liability. I can only think that the colour of his shirt was a factor.

It would appear that they've fixed the semi-colon glitch. They did say that they'd get their techies onto it, but I wasn't hopeful.

Regarding Piri Weepu, I don't think too many kiwis would agree that he was a 'hero' of the RWC. In the final he missed all his kicks at goal and it was his fly-kick that led directly to the French try. He almost lost the match on his own.

@cuw3100

Interesting comment there. Why would it worry us that our brand new halfback is tearing it up? He's only early 20s... he'll be around for another 10 seasons if we're lucky. And by all accounts TJ Perenara is only being held back from the ABs as he's still too young (19 I think)... and Kerr-Barlow was unlucky to miss out after his Super 15 form and will surely go on the end of season tour. Piri is really just holding the fort until A. Smith gets a bit more experience, as we're probably not keen on having two rookies in the squad at once.

And so what if we look weaker without KR, DC or McCaw? They are arguably the best in their respective positions in the world... and last I checked Cruden was developing nicely, Sam Cane had two excellent performances against Ireland for a 20-yr-old (not that it looks like McCaw is slowing down anyway), and while Read is hard to replace right now, he's only 26... so has a good few years on the clock just yet, with Vito a more than handy replacement.

Seriously, can you give me a team on the planet with more strength in depth than the ABs? We've brought in a bunch of rookies into the team this season (Savea, Smith, Retallick, Romano, Cane and Barrett... and you could probably include Ellison and B Smith in there as well) and not one of them has looked out of place any time he's been picked... sure, they aren't world class yet, but between the 8 of them they have about 20 test caps, so you couldn't expect that!

Other teams talk about re-building and the likes and accepting losses as "part of the process" (i.e. England), but the ABs have replaced 1/3rd of a team and haven't lost a match yet this season.

@ APV1: hahahaha! Yes, it might be... Because I have certainly overcome my nagging tendency of using semi-colons; It's hyphens or commas all the way now...

Dammit!

@ JayStarr - I have had similar issues with comments. It appears that the forum cannot cope with semi-colons. As such, if you're writing a list you have to use commas instead.

That might be the reason.

It could also be because you're CRAZY, of course!

Maybe if PR's commenting system wasn't so screwed at the moment there would be more comments on this article...

Lately it is quite a frequent occurence for me to type a comment, only to be told that you are "unable to accept that comment at this time"... losing my whole comment (and the time I spent typing it). However, if I break it down to a couple of sentences it seems to be fine then... But even when it does go through it is taking AGES for it to appear on the site (slower than before), making a conversation with other posters practically impossible.

If you are trying to get us to type less, lower the amount of allowed words. Otherwise sort it out. I'm sure it's frustrating other people as well.

I'm so annoyed I forgot what I wanted to say about this article in the first place, so I'm not going to bother. Not even sure if this one will go through...

@cuw3100 - And the AB's are the only team that struggles if they miss world class &/or experienced players? It's kind of stating the obvious isn't it? & it's the same for any team.

BTW funny that you should point out the scrum half position - We've struggled for world class players at scrum half for a while but right now that particular position is probably the healthiest it has ever been in NZ. Along with Smith... Kerr-Barlow, & Perenara are probably the top 3 young, most exciting prospects for scrum half in the world. I guess you are right about the MIB management being worried.... worried because they've got figure how to keep these 3 young men in NZ.

When Leinster U19s lose a pre-season friendly vs full-strength Saints team they get pilloried by PR. Toulouse get smashed in a T14 local derby with a full-strength team and there's no mention. Come on chaps!

Elissalde and Toulouse's players' attitude = NOT HOT

Not: - Bryan Habana - for deliberately misleading the ref and TJ's and knowingly claim that he didn't touch a ball. Cheating? Perhaps. Poor sportsmanship? Most certainly.
