The 3 incidents?? (missed that admission on 1st reading) - sorry, I would have bet my house on there being only one - but any excuse for a Brit. When you going to go write for News of the World??

Is it not shocking that a serious incident like this marred the whole post game chats. In all honesty it was a very good game, winning or losing in the last 20 secs is a shocker. There are many people that saw many things and please remember that the ref can only see what he is able to, sitting at home on a couch sipping a beer and chirping does nothing for anyone. I thought that the ref was very fair to both the Lions & the Boks. There are things he missed on both sides, but that is the game. The Lions have no one else to blame but themselves for losing the game, it was theirs for the taking, I mean what was O'Gara thinking, he knows what he should have done!!!

hi - i am french and have truly enjoyed the game which was a great test match - howver when i see all the british people criticising so heavily the referee this makes me laugh - for years and year and years the french have been many times stolen by british referees who could be very partial at times to say the least (not all of them but quite a lot) - also when i see the british lions getting along so well i wonder how it is still possible to allow bristish referees to refer a game between a british team and france (why dont we have referees frm southern hemisphere) - so only to say to british poeple come on cut the crap about the referee - this said that was a truly great test match and both teams can be really proud of the way they played - and as a neutral person i enjoyed every minute of it - i feel sorry for the lions to loose it at the last minute on a penalty kick so far away for their posts but this article frm this journalist is really a disgrace - yes burger should be punished heavily (more then the 8 weeks he was given) but to blame so heavily the referee and to cry that owise the lions would have won is just pathetic

I agree Danny, that Burger's sent off was a huge turning point in the match. Unfortunately the Lions could not make full use of the opperetunity to seal the match.

Haha, we won, they lost, same in the worldcup :) we're world champions , everybody else isn't. Hopefully we'll win the Tri Nations too, then we'll be World Champs, Lions series winners and Tri nations champs and everybody else isn't. Even if we don't win the Tri Nations, we'll still be Worldchamps and Lions series winners. Bwahahahaha. Everyone else can eat it. As a South African, say what you want, right now at this very moment the scoreboard and the silverware says we're better than the rest ;) if everybody else stops whining about it, I'll stop gloating about it. if we beat them once, you could argue luck, we beat them twice, no luck involved.

Yes, referees (sigh) .... O'Driscoll going over the maul .... advantage not played when Habana had a clear run to the tryline .... numerous high tackles by the oh-so-clean Britons ... sigh

Why oh why cannot Br Lions and South African rugby move away from refighting the Boer War. If all this Burger stuff would have happened vs the Wallabies or All Blacks there would almost be no issue. Certainly the bile and hatred shown towards the Springboks would not be present if other ANGLO countries [ie NZ or AUS] would have been the opponent. It must be faced that rugby as an ANGLO sport rugby harbours deep hatred for the non anglo who plays the game .The French, the Argentine and especially the Afrikaans South African. This ,like eye gouging must be eradicated from the game.

I think it is all blown out of context, when i last looked it is rugby and rugby is a hard game so a little rough housing is expected in every game. SA need to address the coaching as White was far superior to De Villiers (who can even give a good interview) bring back white!

Aye Jimmy! Did you not read the article before you posted your comments. Title.."Ungracious and Hesitant". I dont live in the UK so I don't watch Sky sports. But I saw the immediate post match interviews on SA Super Sports with the captains, and the word Lions did not pass John Smits lips. BTW, Mealamu is not the Allblack captain...(idiot) Its Mils Muliaina.

Jimmy_Pitt says...

rugbyspook88, you're an idiot. John Smit spoke admiringly of how the Lions provided a contest in every aspect of the game, whereas O'Connell and McGeechan never once mentioned the Boks, all they did was whine about how the injuries prevented them from winning. Not once during this tour have the Lions coaches or captains given any recognition to their opponents. I'm neither a Kiwi nor a Saffer, but I acknowledge that Kevin Mealamu knows how to both win and lose gracefully, as also does John Smit. Sadly, the Lions don't. If you had watched Sky Sports UK, the studio panel (all former Lions themselves) were unanimous in praising John Smit's post-match comments.

I would admit that Peter de Villiers is an idiot, he's after all an ANC supporter. But sheesh, stop whining! Your going on as if the Burger incident was a major turing point in the game, but Fitzgerald wasn't even seriously injured! Are you implying that the only way the Lions could have won, would have been against 14 Boks?

A great game of rugby let down by a few incidents on the field and a complete lack of decorum off the field. I thought the lions were fantastic as were the Boks. Its a pity that neither the Boks coach or their captain had the class to acknowledge that fact. The Boks one and all were very bad winners. BTW, I am NZer.

First comment. Very surprised!

Wanted to clarify a couple of things first: a) I am a South African b)missed the alleged gouging incident as I missed the first 2 minutes of the game. That said I have read what seems like a millions articles on the subject. A couple of things stand out. If he did indeed gouge then he deserved a red card and a big ban. This behavior does not belong in rugby. What an idiot. And De Villiers is an even bigger idiot for his post match comments. These commenst were made post match after he had time to reflect. How can you condone that by saying its part of the game. Someone please get rid of him!!! Boks have been trying to shake this thuggish image for a while. This image, has in the past, cost us numerous penalties which might have gone the other way had it been other teams. Refs penalise on reputation sometimes. Enough Bok bashing. I find it funny that the Lions think Burger only getting yellow swung the game. Surely the idea of a match is for 15 players to play 15 players and test eachother to the full. Surely the Lions would not have wanted to play 14 men. There has been talk that the uncontested scrums gave the Boks the advantage. No-one can predict what would have happened had the scrums continued as normal. I would like to see a replay of Bothas tackle before making further comment but did anyone not notice BOD's shoulder barge on Rossouw?? It is a pity that a couple of incidents have ruined a Lions series.

It is always the case that rules are left for the interpretation of the referee, sadly, I have yet to see a referee to be consistent, nor apply the "harsh" end without looking for a way not to!

As for Peter de Villiers, when you make a political appointment, don't cry when he mouthes politics!

Completely agree with article there is no place for gouging or foul play in sport. And the actions of burger botha and the defense by de villiers only sully and throw into doubt given the points scored when burger was off what should have been a great result for s africa.

teri says...

The difference between Scott Murray and Burger is that Scott Murray was not looking at the player he kicked and was unaware that he would make contact with his boot - he was being held illegally and was trying to get free. Burger's was a deliberate attempt to damage not one but both eyes and he knew exacltly what he was doing. Should never be back on a rugby field. How many parents of young players are going to encourage them to be involved in a game where players like Burger are allowed to continue to play after an act like that .

Danny, I believe the Lions played wonderfully and really brought it to the springboks. They returned the complement to the springboks and played hard, 'in your face rugby'. From John Smit's post match interview, this is really the kind of rugby South Africa respects. I think Schalk Burger's actions were silly and done in a moment of madness. The way it was dealt with however, is quite consistent (so far) with the Parisse incident in the preceding AB vs Italy match on the day. To try and seek more mileage out of this incident is simply to what end? Are we supposing that the way things should have happened, is that it should have been a red card ..and then Lions play 14 instead and then level the series? Where is the glory in that? I was surprised that Sheridan's punch into Danie Rousseau's groin after putting him down at 61:46 minutes of play did not get any follow up - but then again, that would have required someone to make a song and dance of it at the time - which did not happen. I find it somewhat embarrassing for the sport nowadays how the press goes on and on and on. Especially here in the Northerrn Hemisphere. The Lions must now give it one more push, with the courage and deepened determination Wales showed last year. I think De Villiers could have responded with the normal ' it is in the hands of the siting commissioner ' as his Lions counterpart did. De Villier's is his own worst enemy when it comes to the press and I think the press is rather cruel to inteview him, because the scalping is definately one way. But fair play he stands up for his boys. As does Ian McGeecan who himself has refrained from passing any praise or acknowledgement of the Boks' effort. So it is maby just a matter of more sophisticated bias. There is one more match and I will expect nothing less than a fierce contest from both sides - looking forward to great rugby.

SpringbokPete says...

I couldn't agree more.. Pieter de Villiers conduct since he took over as SA coach is lamentable. He is an embarrassment to our sport and I hope SA rugby take a firm stance against his conduct. His incoherent mutterings, and abrasive, even hostile reaction to the media and others who do not agree with him is bad enough. To top that off he has shown no indication that he possesses the skills as a coach in guiding SA rugby forward.

We won this series in spite of him, not because of him, and were rather lucky to do so as well. His stubborn refusal to play in-form players from the start ( Heinrich Brussow, Jacques Fourie, Morne Steyn, Wynand Olivier - to name a few ) and his farcical substitutions in the First test, show a coach lacking in understanding some of the basics of being a top coach.

Lets not forget how poor we were in the Tri-Nations, last year. We finished stone last from a team that had just been crowned World Champions. Pieter De Villiers can take a large portion of that blame with his mystifying and naive tactics and strange team selections. Not to mention his ridiculous after match comments after each test.

This current Lions series has shown us how talented our players are even with a rudderless coach at the helm. I can only imagine how good we could be under a Robbie Deans for example.

His comments regarding Burger would be laughable if they weren't so offensive and embarrassing ....He has become the Joke and the sooner SA rugby remove him from his position the better .

SA rugby deserves better than this !!!
