Going under the knife: Tom Smith

Ospreys flank Tom Smith will undergo surgery to his knee having sustained an injury in a recent clash against Edinburgh.

Having consulted with a knee specialist, the bad news for the Welsh region is that Smith faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

"Tom suffered a complex multi-ligament injury to his knee that will require surgery to repair the damage,"said Ospreys head physio Chris Towers.

The 27-year-old's surgery will take place within the next fortnight. The surgical procedure will be followed by an extensive recovery and rehabilitation process.

Smith, who made his debut for Ospreys in 2007, signed a contact extension in 2012. His absence will be felt as he offers versatility across the back row.

The Welsh-based side next entertain Ulster at the Liberty Stadium on Friday.
