Thirteen points: Dan Biggar

Tries from Ryan Jones and Hanno Dirksen helped the Ospreys claim a 23-16 victory over the Scarlets in the PRO12 at Parc y Scarlets on Friday.

In a tense and scrappy opening period - largely dominated by kicking - Dan Biggar slotted three penalties to Rhys Priestland's two efforts.

And after Priestland had levelled with his third three-pointer, Jones and Dirksen touched down late on to give the visitors their first win of the campaign, despite a late try from George North.

The two sides have endured contrasting fortunes so far this season. While the Llanelli-based outfit have emerged victorious in their first three encounters, the Ospreys have recorded the opposite - defeat in every PRO12 game thus far.

It was the hosts who started the brighter and looked to take advantage of a potential lack of confidence in the visitors' ranks. And they opened the scoring with a Priestland penalty from a breakdown infringement after four minutes, but Biggar responded with one of his own to level.

The Scarlets' fly-half added a second three-pointer as the home side regained their advantage before the away side's fly-half once again got the Ospreys back into the game.

Biggar then scored his third from the tee to put his side into a 9-6 half-time lead.

There wasn't much change in the second-half either with the match remaining attritional.

Priestland's early penalty was all either team had to show for most of the period. However, the Ospreys hadn't read the script and went over for two late touchdowns to seal the win.

North did score late on for the hosts to rescue a bonus-point but it wasn't enough.

Get off the AP soapbox!

Munster and leinster have great squads, and rest their players to prevent burn out.

Why gripe about them, when they are doing it right?

As you know, I am not Irish, but Welsh, if we had the strength in depth, I'd be happy.

What an excellent match to watch. Both sides went hammer and tongs for the win ,and no one held back in the tackle.Scarlets still need a bit extra in the forwards ,if they can retify that ,they are going to challange Leinster/Munster ect this season. While the Ospreys have finally won ,and hopefully now have thrown off the hang ups from earlier.Hopefully both Leinster and Munster are going to find themselves really challanged this season by at least 2 welsh clubs and 1 scottish .Making it harder for them to play 2nd strings for most games,if they want to be Pro12 champions.

Well done to the Ospreys - the pack outclassed the Scarlets!

Shocking refereeing all night long! First two penalties weren't penalties, then two clear ones were missed and it just continued that way. Ridiculous yellow for Samson Lee who had actually got the initiative in the scrum. The new law change to the scrum has been of no assistance as anyone with an ounce of sense could work out. This idiot penalises teams going forward lol!

I would add that there was no sign of bias - just complete incompetence.

Clearly the TMO got 2 decisions wrong, one in favour and one against the Scarlets. Where do they get these idiots from?

MarcosGGuti , TMO could only respond to what the ref asked.

On the Stowers incident, he could have asked about foul play. But the TMO cannot answer what he is not asked!

Maybe he did not have a good enough view of the incident to consider there had been foul play.

The commentators have the benefit of replays to point the finger, and then go the wrong player, blaming Kahn, the 9 not Stowers the 6!

As I said, Ospreys were lucky to keep him on the field, and not concede a pen try.

Maybe the North "try" being given was justice of a sort.

As I said, law only mentions being in touch or touch in goal.

Overall, I'm happy for Scarlets to get losing bonus, as they have suffered and missed playoffs because of officials mistakes in the past.

I notice my post berating PR for originally saying the game was at the Liberty!, has not been posted.

OK, PR makes mistakes.....

Go, Ospreys! I don't think the TMO had a great night, for either team. But well, it was nice to see a good win and a good rugby match :)

There go the Scarlets' chances of being taken seriously this season- if you couldn't beat the Ospreys at home in the state they're in... well, pack it in, lads.

Ok...please help me clear this out. Last try, North's body was outside and THEN he ground the ball....try givin'. That's to me a NO try. What the laws say about this instance?

Good game anyway, big win for Ospreys

Well done Ospreys, beat Scarlets in the forwards. Scarlets need that extra grunt up front.

Lucky for Ospreys Stowers was not red carded (though at this level, they would only give a yellow), as well as a penalty try.

Ryan Jones showed how he has been missed.

I think TMO got it wrong over North's try, he was over the dead ball line, not the touch in goal line.

Law 22.4 g, talks about player "in touch or touch in goal", not player over dead ball line.

If it was a kick ahead, and he picked the ball up from over the dead ball line, he makes the ball dead, but who are we to deny Scarlets a losing bonus point when we were so lucky?

:-)
