Dragons must reward pack - Leach

Frustrated: Pat Leach

Dragons centre Pat Leach is desperate for he and his teammates out wide to capitalise on the good graft of the region's pack.

The Rodney Parade outfit were wasteful in their backline play last Thursday, kicking ball away needlessly and spurning try-scoring opportunities in a 23-19 defeat to Edinburgh.

That the Scots played the better rugby - scoring two tries to one - despite the hosts enjoying the lion's share of possession and territory, spoke volumes about the lack of precision and ruthlessness out wide.

Though the performance was much-improved from the previous home game's meek loss to Connacht, the defeat came as a bitter blow under the circumstances.

And Leach feels the Dragons backs must start to reward to impressive efforts of their forwards, led by captain Andrew Coombs.

"It was a very frustrating night and we lost it in the first 20 minutes when we didn't put the points on the board for all of the pressure that we had," Leach told the South Wales Argus.

"It was a much better performance than Connacht but we didn't take our chances and that's so disappointing.

"Credit to the forwards because they had a great game and I was gutted that they didn't get the reward that their efforts deserved with a penalty try at the end.

"They have had a hard season but they worked so hard and had the better of Edinburgh's pack."

The four-point loss left the Dragons with just one win - a surprise victory over high-flying Glasgow Warriors - in seven games, with a disastrous 2014 spoiling what had been a compelling start to the season.

Now they are left battling it out with capital rivals Cardiff Blues for the unenviable title of the worst-placed region, with the Blues just three points behind Lyn Jones' ninth-placed side.

"We don't want to slip further down the table and it's in our own hands to finish strongly to maybe climb a couple of places," added Leach.

"There are four games left and we have to push on because it has been a much better season.

"The Blues are close and a massive aim of ours is to finish above them but, and I know it's a cliché, all we can do is focus on the game in front of us and Treviso away will be a big challenge."
