Violent game: Anthony Foley

Munster forwards coach Anthony Foley believes rugby has become a "violent game" and that protecting possession in contact is now critical.

Foley, whose side take on Irish rivals Leinster at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday, admits that times have changed as the hits increase in intensity.

"It is turning into a violent game," he told the Irish Independent about the professional game today.

"It's got to a level where the ball must be protected as it can be so difficult to get it back, where the hits are massive."

Managing such physical onslaught on a weekly basis has seen Munster change their thinking since Foley's day, as he confesses to the paper.

"We used to train on Tuesday and Thursday. Have a few pints Saturday, a few pints Sunday," he said. "Maybe even a few pints on the Monday."

"These lads (Munster) sacrifice a lot, their education sometimes and their social life. Nobody on match-day will have seen their preparation during the week."
