Racing edge Munster at the death

Racing metro scrum half Maxime Machenaud v Munster

Try for Racing: Maxime Machenaud

Racing Metro needed two late penalties to scrape a 22-17 Heineken Cup victory over Munster at the Stade de France in Paris on Saturday.

Racing Metro came back from a poor start to stun Munster in the dying moments.

The Munster pack, led by the returning Paul O'Connell, dominated their French counterparts in the early stages and, after they were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty try, Ronan O'Gara got his side on the scoreboard with three points.

The Irishmen didn't have to wait long for their opening try though as some brittle Racing defence allowed Peter O'Mahony to break through and offload to Sean Dougall to crash over under the posts.

Newly-arrived Racing fly-half Olly Barkley reduced the deficit with a penalty midway through the half on his first start for the club and, after an error in the Munster backline, Jacques Cronje hacked the ball on and Maxime Machenaud touched it down to level the scores.

And, despite the visitors looking the better side for the vast majority of the first half, they went into the interval 13-10 behind after Barkley kicked another three points late on.

Barkley extended the home side's advantage to six points early in the second half and, with the rain falling and the pitch cutting up badly, both sides struggled to create any clear-cut opportunities.

As the match moved into the final ten minutes though, Simon Zebo exploded into action from a quickly taken line-out. The Ireland winger attacked from deep and targeted forwards standing out wide to burst through the defence and score in the corner.

Ian Keatley nervelessly slotted over the conversion from the touchline to give Munster a one-point lead with eight minutes to play but more Munster errors allowed first Barkley and then Mirco Bergamasco to kick penalties and seal victory for Racing.

The welsh clubs have asked Murray how he avoids yellow cards. Still waiting a response, but he must have a good strategy in place, given he committed the most clear 2 yellow card offences of the weekend, and only had one penalty given against him!

Must check out this Paul Marshall fella. He must be in with a good chance for the November series. If Murray is dropped hopefully Kidney wont fall back on the tried and failed Reddan. He's always good for an intercept pass or 2.

NHSaints I assume you're referring to the Match between Munster and Northampton in Thomond Park last year? That's what you get when your team don't compete for the ball and rely on the ref to win it for them. In any case, had Munster lost that match, they'd still have qualified handily with 5 non controversial wins out of six.

Munster have been falling apart for a couple of seasons now. Some disgraceful descisions made by the crowd at Thomond park rather than the ref have led to munster getting out of jail on numerous occasions over the past few seasons, they shouldn't even have made the QF's last season...Leinster seem to be waning a little now as well...O'driscoll has been off, without Kearney Madigan hasn't been the most potent threat at 15 and the Leinster set peice didn't look remotely dominant against the cheifs today.

Really disappointed with Murray. He was superb when he broke through in 2011 but has just gone backwards since. He desperately needs to rediscover that form.

munster were poor for much of the game, and didnt deserve a bonus point. Murray has always been a poor decision maker so perhaps not surprising he made such a comical blunder..and should have been yellow carded anyway.

Present Munster look a pale version of past Munster. RM92 are hardly the zingiest team out there. Leinster struggled with Exeter too. Are two of the recent Irish powerhouses finally waning? Toulouse might be joining them too!?

not sure Murray is to blame. you just got the feeling that Racing were always going to find a way to win. (and you can't say that about them very often!!)

Munster threw it waay through the stupidity of Conor Murray at the end. He should be dropped for next week's match. He has to pay the price

First twenty minuets you would think Munster will win quite easyly, but no Racing really competed at the breakdown ,and started to get on top,and forced Munster into making mistakes.S.Zebos try from nothing gave pause for thought ,but again Racing just battled back and got the penalties to win in the end.O.Barkley looked very good with Herendez, and they directed the fight back well O.Barklay was my MOTM.

Absolutely disgraceful play from Murray at the end not to kick that ball clear. I hope he gets a bollocking from every single member of the squad over that. They should make it clear that he cost Munster three points with that.
