liam2me - I'm Munster born and bred so I care. Hands up, I will hold my peace and hope for a better result than the McGahan / Fisher experiment. I don't actually doubt his potential or credentials (although that top level is missing so there is a small extra gamble here) but if we are bringing in World Class expertise, then we need a strategy to bring on Irish expertise behind it so we're not in the same boat in 5 or 10 years time (as is the case with Foley in Munster but not in Leinster, Ulster or indeed Ireland). There are a number of coaches in the AIL that should be brought on, Reggie Corrigan for example, and Jackman doing good things with Clontarf.

POG, they're all contracted, and Munster have had people who are too close to the set up with pre-conceived ideas and opinions for too long now. We needed a clean break (much as Ireland does really) and someone who has fresh ideas and a fresh philosophy. Foley was kept on to learn from Penney. None of the 3 Irish coaches you mentioned have a CV anywhere near as impressive as Penney's, being it his ITM success of his ability to manage a transition from old to new.
As soon as he was mentioned and those of us who care enough to do the research had a look at his background, he was the clear favourite.

swiwi and XavierG - I beg to differ. Look at their records. They all struggled in their first season, Cheika took 2 seasons to get going and McGahan never really got his head above water. Even Schmidt took a few months to find his feet although he quickly brought his experience and excellence to bear. Can you remind me however, what S15, Top14, Premiership or ProDirect club any of these guys were HEAD coach of before they took the Leinster and Munster jobs? Which is the point I was making. It's a step up.
liam2me - I never for a moment questioned Penney's credentials. However, IMO Munster have a good forwards coach already and don't need another one. To answer your question, McLaughlin, McCall, Bradley could all have been looked at.

There is no doubt that the 'intellectual capital' that non-Irish coaches bring to Ireland rugby should be captured through Irish Assistant coaches. After all there is no point in having the best teams in Europe (largely with Ireland qualified players) ONLY to then forget about nurturing and developing the next generation of coaches.
Rob Penney has a very good track record with Canterbury in the NPC in New Zealand.... and he has also worked at academy level, NZ U21 level and with the Crusaders.... He will certainly know what it is like to build a winning culture at Munster. This indeed is an inspired appointment!

who would you suggest is better that's Irish? You say that it's too early for Foley (who is staying as forwards coach) yet in the same breath say it's wrong.
This is a great, progressive appointment and one most Munster fans are delighted with.

Food for thought indeed. A lot of attention on imported players but not much thought to the coaches.
Now question is if OShea came back would we call him home grown being as he has cut his coaching teeth in the English set up and the premiership?

Another import. IRFU at least need to be aggressively putting in homegrown assistant coaches to learn from the best. Kidney is still playing a schools game at top level, Bradley would never have had a chance outside Connacht and had to go Edinburgh to shine, same with McCall and Saracens, Brian McLaughlin completely shafted. On the other hand we've taught Cheika, Schmidt, McGahan how to be effective top level club head coaches... while it probably still is a bridge too far for Foley this early in his career, there something wrong here.

I hope they get a good attacks coach, and Munster need on the field is a top drawer Back Row player.
