Rhys Priestland: Late penalty secured the draw

Scarlets and Munster played out a cracking 20-all draw in Llanelli on Saturday as the hosts lost valuable ground on the top four in the RaboDirect PRO12.

Nigel Davies' men needed a penalty inside the final ten minutes from fly-half Rhys Priestland to secure the draw after the two teams had matched each other blow for blow.

The hosts looked in trouble in the 55th minute when an Ian Keatley penalty extended Munster's lead to ten points.

However, a try from flank Aaron Shingler and five points from the boot of Priestland ensured that honours ended even.

Neither team headed into this evening's game in decent form, although both had recorded wins a week earlier.

The first points of the match came during a frantic opening 15-minute period and the lion's share were scored by Munster.

Scarlets were the first off the mark, courtesy of a Sean Lamont try, but the visitors roared back and established a seven-point lead thanks to scores from Donnacha Ryan and Simon Zebo.

Munster then went further in front when Keatley booted over a penalty, although the hosts were able to reduce the deficit thanks to a three pointer from Priestland.

The two penalties seemed to slow the pace of the game following a quickfire start and there were to be no further points before half-time.

The beginning of the second half did not bring with it the avalanche of points we'd seen in the first half, but a Keatley penalty on 55 minutes gave Munster a ten-point cushion.

That score left Scarlets with a mountain to climb, but they were able to regroup and force their way back into the contest in the final quarter.

Just after the hour, Shingler crossed for Scarlets' second try of the evening to take the home side to within three points of Munster.

And the scores were level as the game headed into the final ten minutes thanks to Priestland's second penalty of the match.

Both sides searched desperately in the closing stages for the points that would win them the match, but defences held firm, ensuring that the spoils were shared.

TMO decisions have been very poor this season.

Maybe the TMO is watching something on another channel that is more interesting?

I know the screen in the van is only a small monitor, but Whitehouse must have seen the gap between the fingers and the ball, as it travelled forward before the final touch?

Quite the definition of a knock on.

@Hermes - are you being serious - the idiot failed to penalise Munster time and time again for illegal play at the breakdown. Read the other posts here. You can't disagree that they were playing the ball when they were the tackler, surely????

Surprised welsh out halves sherked the option of a drop to win the game. When has that happened before?

Scarlett's intensity at the breakdown was appalling for a team fighting for something. Sometimes it's down to luck but sometimes it's up to the team to sort out problems on the field. I can't believe that Scarlett's management have said that the ref decides tight games. Unbelievable.

@POCandROG - I think you blame the person with the biggest impact - i.e. the ref!

Maybe the Scarlet fans should blame Priestlands horrible tackling instead of the ref......

I thought Kilcoyne looked very promising - did his reputation no harm at all. Kilcoyne and Archer - two promising young irish Props at Munster...thankfully!!

That coupled with P. McAllister and also D. Fitzpatrick (even though he's almost 29) of Ulster, we have Irish options that need to be used.

IRFU need to set a directive to make the Provinces play Irish Props. I do not agree with IRFU being too invloved in the Province's operations, but this is turning into a crisis and we need to start preparing for 2015 now...

All the whinging about Rolland. Munster were lucky to come away with the draw.

Some appalling kicking from hand. Zebo try was obviously lost forward. I don't understand how anyone looking at it could think otherwise.

That was astonishing as a game. I can't believe Munster got out of their half, let alone drew that game.

Rolland does not know that the tackler has to release the tackled player before trying to take the ball from him. There were about 7 or 8 penalties against the Scarlets for not releasing and all of these should have been awarded to them.

Other than 3 scrums where Munster were dominant, the Scarlets had the better of it. Two early scrums that were clear Scarlets penalties were interpreted by idiot head as being Munster penalties.

Even during the last play of the game, Munster were offside 3 times, slowed the ball down twice and came in at the side once.

Munster lived offside and slowed the ball down illegally all night.

So the Scarlets probably missed out on around 35-40 penalties, and Munster should have had around 6 or 7 yellow cards. Rolland - don't come to Wales again - you are clearly a cheat!! Shame the coaches can't tell you that!

Too many sloppy decisions by Rolland.

Not refereeing the so called interpretations.

Assist tackler not needing to release.

Ball ripped away, is not a knock on, that wsa cahnged before the 6N.

But he'll still get appointed!
