Leinster saw off the challenge of Scarlets and secured a try bonus point in a 36-19 victory in Saturday's Pro12 clash at the RDS.

A penalty try along with scores from Brendan Macken, Jack McGrath, Eoin Reddan and Zane Kirchner gave Leinster a comfortable victory over a Scarlets side who were missing a host of international players.

Gareth Davies, Gareth Maule and Adam Warren all touched down for Simon Easterby's side but they were outclassed by a powerful Leinster side who climb up to second in the table behind leaders Munster while the defeat leaves the Scarlets in sixth place.

After a slow start, the reigning champions took an early lead through the boot of Ian Madigan after Aaron Shingler had been pinged by referee Ian Davies at the tackle area.

Leinster were rampant in the opening stages and soon scored the first try of the evening as centre Macken broke through the Scarlets defence before diving over the try-line after a powerful break by Kirchner.

The hosts were dominating at the scrum and after penalising the Scarlets for wheeling, referee Davies awarded Leinster a penalty try, which Madigan duly converted, to give the Irish side a 15 point lead.

Matt O'Connor's side were even further ahead soon after as newly capped Ireland forward McGrath touched down for Leinster's third try after only 26 minutes. Madigan converted to make it a seven point play and despite losing Leo Cullen to the sin-bin, Leinster went into the half-time with a comfortable 22 point cushion.

The Scarlets flew out of the blocks in the second half and soon had their first points of the match as Davies stole the ball from Shane Jennings inside Leinster's 22 before jinking his way over the try-line.

Just as the visitors were getting to grips with the match, Sione Timani was shown a yellow card for a cynical trip to give Leinster the numerical advantage.

As Leinster pushed for the all important fourth try, the Scarlets secured turnover ball and broke the length of the field, with Maule eventually touching down. Aled Thomas kicked the conversion to reduce the deficit to 10 points as the game ticked into the final quarter.

But Leinster secured the bonus point as Sean Cronin powered into the Scarlets 22 before scrum-half Reddan crossed over the whitewash, with Madigan adding the conversion.

The hosts ended the game in style with a fifth try as full-back Kirchner touched down after impressive build-up play from Lote Tuqiri and Jimmy Gopperth, before Madigan added the extras from the touchline.

Centre Warren scored a late consolation try for the visitors in the final minute, which Thomas converted, but the damage was already done as Leinster claimed another impressive win.
