New scrum laws please Healy

SKY_MOBILE Cian Healy - Leinster Heineken Cup final

Advantage: Cian Healy

Leinster and Ireland loosehead prop Cian Healy has expressed his satisfaction with the new scrummaging laws.

The implementation of a new "crouch, bind, set" set of calls, along with greater emphasis on scrum-halves feeding the ball straight and hookers making an earlier decision whether to strike for the ball appears to be paying off.

Healy believes the new laws have given him more freedom with regards to attacking an opposition tighthead at the scrum.

The Leinster loosehead was part of his team's two Heineken Cup victories so far against the Ospreys and Castres, as they seek a fifth European title in five seasons.

"I'm happy enough with it," Healy told the Irish Independent.

"A big heavy tighthead was always the one I struggled with. It is a bit possible for looseheads to do more now.

"The main thing for tightheads is to hit down the back of a loosehead and keep them down low and stuff.

"But now you are in there, starting off in the sweet spot so it is a chance to go at them.

"It takes the element of them using their weight out of it. It goes down to a muscle-off, using strength and technique."
