Ruaridh Jackson glasgow v scarlets

Warriors: Rise to third

Glasgow's bid for a place in the RaboDirect Pro12 top four was boosted by a 19-9 win over play-off rivals Scarlets at Firhill.

A huge-forward effort from the Glasgow pack was the bedrock for the success, which lifts the Scottish side into third place in the table.

Scotland fly-half contender Ruaridh Jackson was Glasgow's match-winner with four penalties and the conversion of Jon Welsh's maiden try.

Jackson and opposite number Dan Newton traded penalties in a fast-paced first half where both sides stayed true to their tradition of attacking rugby.

Glasgow came closest to crossing the whitewash on 29 minutes when Samoan speedster David Lemi attempted to touch down his own kick ahead only for Gareth Davies to get there first.

But Glasgow did not have to wait long for what turned out to be the decisive try when rookie prop Welsh crashed over from close range on 33 minutes.

Jackson added the extras to make it 10-3 to the home side at the break.

Lemi used his lightening pace to burst through the Scarlets defence early in the second half and his pass found openside Chris Fusaro up in support, but he was denied a clear run to the line by a last-ditch tackle.

The game then boiled down to a kicking duel with Jackson outscoring Newton three penalties to two to deny the Welshmen even the consolation of a losing bonus point on their long journey home.
