Financial concerns for Connacht

Irish province Connacht are facing an ominous shortfall of €900,000 at the end of the current financial year, according to reports.

Due to overspending and a shortfall in projected outcome, the alarming deficit is like to affect Connacht's recruitment plans for next season according to the Irish Independent.

Currently coached by former Samoan international Pat Lam, Connacht were unceremoniously thrashed by Saracens in the Heineken Cup on Saturday as their European season came to an end.

The smaller Irish province's squad is still dwarfed by those of Leinster, Munster and Ulster, but Connacht have fought above their weight this season, famously defeating Toulouse in France.

While Irish talent is present in the form Jack Carty, Matt Healy and Kieran Marmion - not to mention Ireland international Robbie Henshaw - the club has work to do in replacing departed chief executive Tony Sears in order to arrest their current financial slide.

Connacht were threatened with extinction in 2003 but have steadily improved their standing in the game since then. While that threat has not yet returned, work needs to be done.
