Boks blow it in Dunedin

Opening try: Israel Dagg

New Zealand took one step closer to claiming the Rugby Championship title after seeing off South Africa 21-11 at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin on Saturday.

The All Blacks, unbeaten in 14 Tests, outscored the Springboks two tries to one for a win that sees them take a commanding lead in the competition.

It certainly wasn't the best performance by the home side and they can count themselves lucky to come away with four points after South Africa blew several scoring opportunities - particularly in goal-kicking - that could have seen the match end in their favour.

Morne Steyn, Frans Steyn and Johan Goosen managed only two of nine attempts between them, whilst the visitors also let three chances slip with the try-line begging.

Indeed, this was a Test the Boks could have and should have won. Instead, South Africa's woeful kicking display and questionable tactics eventually proved costly and now leave New Zealand empty-handed after Aaron Cruden denied the visitors a losing bonus-point thanks to his successful penalty kick on full-time.

South Africa drew first blood when Morne Steyn raised the flags for the first and only time on 18 minutes after his namesake Francois had missed earlier from long range and Bryan Habana failed to hold an awkward pass with the line open.

The All Blacks struck back immediately though. Hooker Andrew Hore put in some hard yards before a beautiful offload from number eight Kieran Read set speedster Israel Dagg - who also handled four times in the movement - away for the opening try. Cruden missed the conversion, but the All Blacks were in front (5-3).

The two Steyns then missed three penalties between them, including a regulation shot from the Bok number ten on the stroke of half-time that could've put his team in front at the break.

But it was New Zealand who held the slender lead, even though the Springboks had 58 per cent territory and forced six turnovers from the All Blacks while conceding two.

South Africa came out firing in the second forty, but once again squandered points after Habana lost the ball on the run with the try-line in sight while Zane Kirchner's drop attempt missed the posts.

They finally broke through when Habana produced a moment of genius, chipping over the top and gathering for a super try - Morne Steyn missed the conversion, but the Boks were in front and deservedly so (5-8).

Cruden levelled the scores with a successful penalty (8-8) and then converted another sensational solo try - this time from replacement half-back Aaron Smith who dummied and sidestepped through the defence from 25 metres out.

Disaster then struck for the men in green and gold when replacement prop Dean Greyling was binned for taking out All Blacks skipper Richie McCaw. It was a night to forget for the Bulls prop, who also coughed the ball up with the try-line beckoning in the dying minutes and conceded a string of penalties.

Down to 14 players, South Africa's kicking woes spread to a third player when replacement Johan Goosen missed from halfway but he kept the game alive going into the final 10 minutes with a successful effort to make it 15-11.

But two penalty calls handed Cruden a pair of three-pointers that he made no mistake with to deny South Africa a bonus-point and make it four wins from four for New Zealand.

Man of the match: For South Africa, Duane Vermeulen was rock-solid while try-scorer Bryan Habana injected plenty of pace into the backline. However, it's hard to look beyond the inspirational performance from All Blacks captain Richie McCaw who gave as good as he received in the forward exchanges.

Moment of the match: Habana's touchdown was certainly one for the highlights reel, but replacement scrum-half Aaron Smith - dropped to the bench for a breach of team protocol last weekend - turned disgrace into triumph when he came off the bench to score New Zealand's decisive try.

Villain of the match: We seriously doubt we'll see Dean Greyling in a Bok jersey again after his error-prone and ill-disciplined 30 minutes on the field... oh, make that 20 minutes on the field - he spent 10 in the bin for his assault on McCaw.

ABs ground out the win, not pretty but 21-11 the scoreboard says. Boks may have won if they kicked their goals and didnt have so many meatheads getting binned

Also the Substitution of Grayling for Beast must surely go down as one of the biggest mistakes in recent Rugby History.

There for the taking and the Boks blew it thanks to Heneke Mayers blind loyalty and dogged determination to stick to Bulls players and styles. How is it SO clear to everyone else that Johan Goosen, Saral Pretorious and Pat Lambie need to be starting but HM can't see it?

Terrible kicking and some bad play from Greyling gifted the game to the All Blacks... Morne Steyn needs to either get better or stop trying to kick. Shockingly bad kicking.... MS hasn't kicked well in a game for a very long time. Why oh why can we not have Peter Grant?? He missed 3 out of around 50 in the entire Super Rugby season! MS missed more than that in just 60 minutes! Very disappointed.... That game should have been ours....

or you could rewrite that front page headline 'Boks Too Bad for All Blacks'.

The after-match video viewing won't be fun for either side.

But, they'll get over it, may take posters here longer than the players! Blame the ref! I'm sure someone will.

One note from commentary team this was NZ's 103rd consecutive game where they have scored a try, unsure if this is a record, just another stat.

Well a better showing from the bokke today, what a differance Louw made at the breakdown. But the aimless kicking ,and bad gameplan again let them down,i even dozed off in the 1st 15 mins of the 2nd half it was that bad Perhaps now HM will actually start with Goosen and Lambie and Jd J ect withSA at home from now on,we can only hope so anyway.ABs still not firing on all cylinders it seems aswell, both teams will be looking for improvement for the final rounds

I don't think you can miss 5 kicks at goal and expect to win in New Zealand. The sad thing is that there were positives in the Springbok's performance, but that was down more to the All Blacks uncharacteristic impotence on attack. Not the way HM will see it though. I enjoyed Habana's try, the old war horse has still got some gas. Oh, and Dean Greyling, you are a big fat c**t.

unassailable lead? I don't think so.

NZ has 16 pts, 2 to play, SA 7 also 2 to play; Oz on 4 have three remaining games. Arg on 2 are out of it, but if nz scored nil (nil - a phrase well known in australian rugby circles) table points in remaining matches and either SA or Oz had 4-try bonus 5pts per match. . .

Unlikely, but not unassailable or they could have presented them with the trophy today.

or am i wrong (could be)

Bokes forwards must be thinking WTF because their backline are devoid of any ideas on how to score. They kick poorly and really squander the hard fought ball the pack gained for them.

The ABs had less ball but did an awful lot more with what they had. Rich McCaw had an outstanding game.

Hard luck Bokke, If Morne had only...

On that performance, the ABs are lucky they played the Wobblies early this season.

When was the last time an AB backline looked this poor???

Ian Foster, how long is his contract?

ABs good win in the end but they had to work very hard in such a physical match, The boks possibly may have won if they had kicked their goals and didnt have so many meatheads in their team.

The boks game plan worked well and the game suited them as was stop start and lots of penalties and scrums.

Good lessons for the younger ABs players in a hard match.

A Smith is definitely the starting 9 as Piri didnt play well around the rucks especially.(reminded me of the WC final)

Lambie cannot have sufficient impact when he only gets 5 minutes. Greyling on the other hand had enough time to have a masive impact on the game. New Zealand are a very good side and you canot leave this many points on the park with missed kicks. Surely it is time to have a relible kicker in the team. Steyn has an apaling conversion record this year and Goosen brings so much more to the game in other areas that to persist with Steyn is downright stupid.

Meyer said before the gam that to beat the AB's we need to be tactically smart. Seems he has just proven his lack of ability in this department.

The Boks contrived to lose this one. Maybe HM will drop Morne stern & all the other Bulls players especially the dumb front row. No brain no pain!

Congrats AB's IMO this has to be one of the worst Bok teams in years. They can not get their kicks over or kick strategically, bad discipline, experienced backs not completing passes. Hell they even bought the AB's down to their level in some cases.

Sad, sad, sad

I don't think its a case of the kiwis being too good.

The way the boks messed that up was exceptional! Steyn needs a time out. Fact. Greyling should never put a bok jersey on again(he's thicker than 2 bricks).

I really rate the kiwis - when they are in flow it's beautiful to watch... but when teams put them under pressure they aren't as good as everyone expects.

Habana's try was absolutely top class!
