Boks focus on attacking gain-line

Not worried about counter attacks: Ricardo Loubscher

Springbok backline coach Ricardo Loubscher says his team's preparations for Saturday's clash with the Wallabies have been focussed on getting over the gain-line.

The Boks were heavily criticised after their 16-16 draw with Argentina but judging by comments coming out of the South African camp this week, there is little chance of a change in game plan.

Instead the Boks are concentrating on making sure they dominate the breakdown in the hope that their backs will make better use of the opportunities they get.

"Australia will be a different challenge for us but our focus this week has been purely on us as a team," Loubscher told reporters in a wet and windy Perth on Tuesday.

"We had a look at our performance against the Pumas and we are focussing on our attack and the things that we have to do well.

"Our focus point as a team is the gain-line and we want to make sure that whatever we do, whether it is off first phase or second phase, is to get over the advantage line and it definitely has an impact on the backs if you get slow ball. The ideal situation is to get quick ball but we have spoken about it and it is something that we need to sort out.

"The backline created some good chances and got a lot of momentum especially in the wider channels. But it is not enough to create chances if you don't convert them into points so that has been an area we have focussed on.

"It is about the execution of our kicks and the chasing lines. We are not worried too much about whether they are going to counter-attack, we just want to make sure that we execute our kicks well and we will get the results and opportunities that we want."

Dingbat 32 for coach!! Makes more sense than the recent bull coming from the coaches. Is Loubscher for real? Is he trying to explain it to a class of 8 year olds? Condescening and arrogant to speak to the press and fans as though we are stupid children who are going to be impressed when he states the most obvious and basic plans.

@Lebock: Bok management have already stated "there's no such thing as plan B". We've all had it wrong all these years. (Ref their inane comment no3 last week.)

What a crock of crap! Are the Bok management/coaching staff brain dead??? No wait, dont answer that.....

I wonder if the Wallabies will be able to surpass their previous highest score against the boks? The boks current strategy appears to be pointing towards it......

Boks are good team. To win, they just need to target over-rated, non performing players in Wallabies like N.Sharpe. D.Dennis and B. Barness. Also pressure K.Beale into submissioon.

So plan A is to get over the gain line and dominate the breakdown. Plan B?

How about just playing like the Cheetahs? at least we could enjoy the game while we get beaten.

"We are not worried too much about whether they are going to counter-attack". What an idiot. Most of the important games SA have lost in recent years were down to just that: aimless or poor kicks, or turnovers conceded, followed by ruthless counter-attacks by the opposition. Just hold onto the ball!!

I am still so stunned to see "Ricardo Loubser: Springbok backline coach" that I can't even read the article...

I dunno.

all these friends here claiming the huge amount of talent - i do not see it.

admittedly, am only watching from far, but the selections of the past 2-3 yrs did not present the amazing backline-runners-crashers-offloaders i would rate a huge talent. let alone the halfs.

Gio Aplon sometimes is gifted. often not. JdV, Steyn and even Fourie have presneted much too little surprising stuff on the pitch.

Am a bit afraid, that the talent is wasted long before bok-level, as no imaginative backline game is trained in the veld. or so.

What drivel he talks. Imagine if the SA teams had good selection and coaching as well as the players they have available----(remember what Eddie Jones achieved).

Oh and someone to talk to the media--

Inane Bok coaching comment number 6 or 7? Still Dean's "one eye on the bledisloe cup" was perhaps the best.

Big forwards smash holes in opposition. Clever scrum half directs forwards and at the right moment spins ball out. The big and fast backs remember to catch ball, then run ball hard and fast remembering to pass ball to right person at the right time. Back without the ball to support ball carrier and add a bit of variety in running lines.

There you go - one paragraph and the Boks have a better game plan than they have since...............Jake White did pretty much what I have above.........and then Nick Mallett before him.

Stop wasting the talent Boks!!!!

I watched the Taranaki - Tasman match last weekend and neither of those two teams had a 'gameplan' or were overly focused on other rubbish truisms. They played without fear of losing or retribution, by running hard into space and off-loading in the tackle. And the fans loved them for it.

Novel concept!! Get across the gain line, supprised no one has come up with this idea before. So the next play is to kick it to the Aussie backs and then become a brick wall. Geez an I thought the object was to score tries ect. I learn something each day.

melkdave says...

Isnt this what the bokke have done for years.Big forward or back runs hard at the defence and pushes it back 2,3,or 5 metres ,only for them to not be able to get quick ball for the next run ,so hoof high chase and hope.Nothing new here i fear, and what nonsense,we arnt worried if the wallabies are able to counter-attack.Isnt that why SA where knocked out of the RWC Australia counter-attacking and getting a vital try.Better hope the bokke can keep hold of the ball this game,as they should dominate territory and possesion imo

"We are not worried too much about whether they are going to counter-attack, we just want to make sure that we execute our kicks well and we will get the results and opportunities that we want" Uh Oh, hopefully no Australians read this or they may decide to counter attack, then the Boks will be in real trouble!!

I wonder if the different coaches ever speak to eachother and at least try to develope a whole game approach rather than trying to be really good in one area, guess that'd be asking too much.

I am expecting a misfiring Bok backline that isnt sure whether to be a brick wall, chase kicks, or try and use the ball out wide, Ill be playing some Laurel and Hardy music while watching the game cause this should be good.

"We are not worried too much about whether they are going to counter-attack"

Lets see how worried he is when we kick possession away to the back three of the Kiwi's. Bokke management is a hindrance to our talented runners.

This is brilliant! Get over the gain line over and over again and then suddenly it becomes the try line and then BOOM you have 5 points. This could set off a whole new direction for rugby!!!
