Kieran Read: Missed training on Friday

All Blacks number eight Kieran Read is doubtful for Saturday's Test with Argentina in La Plata after he missed a training session on Friday.

According to Fairfax Media, Read stayed at the team hotel and is thought to be unwell. Liam Messam trained at number while Steven Luatua took over Messam's regular role on the blindside flank during Friday's training at Saint George's School in Buenos Aires.

If Read, who is also the All Blacks' stand-in captain, is ruled out, hooker Dane Coles is set to come onto the bench and provide cover for the thin loose forwards.

Regular skipper Richie McCaw, who is recovering from a medial ligament knee injury, ran freely at training but it is highly unlikely he will be rushed onto the replacements bench.

If the All Blacks require additional cover for next weekend's clash with the Springboks in Johannesburg then Bay of Plenty's Tanerau Latimer would be called in after Canterbury's Matt Todd had surgery on a pectoral muscle injury.

An update on Read's fitness is expected later on Friday.
