Matt Todd: Out with a pectoral muscle injury

All Blacks flanker Matt Todd's season is over due to a pectoral muscle injury sustained while on ITM Cup duty for Canterbury.

Todd sustained the injury in Canterbury's 25-19 loss at Wellington last weekend.

According to Fairfax Media, he had an operation on Wednesday and Canterbury coach Scott Robertson has confirmed he could be on the sidelines for up to six months.

Todd, who has played two Tests for New Zealand, was on standby for the All Blacks in case Richie McCaw failed to recover from his knee injury ahead of next weekend's test against the Springboks in Johannesburg.

Hansen has made it clear that Sam Cane is McCaw's deputy but Todd, who was one of the best openside flankers in this year's Super Rugby tournament, was in the running for his first run-on appearance for the All Blacks for their match against Japan in Tokyo on November 3.

But the 25-year-old's injury means he will miss that match and the rest of New Zealand's end-of-year tour to the northern hemisphere.
