Horwill's Wallabies to "have a dig"

Leader: James Horwill

Australia captain James Horwill has issued a rallying cry to his players to "have a dig" ahead of the battle against New Zealand.

The Wallabies are looking to bounce back from a 2-1 series defeat against the British and Irish Lions when they play in The Rugby Championship curtain-raiser on Saturday.

Working under a new head coach in Ewen McKenzie following his appointment from the Reds, Horwill, who worked under McKenzie in Queensland, wants his squad to not be daunted by the occasion.

Horwill also stated that the onus was on the forward pack to supply enough possession for the Wallabies dangerous back-line, which includes Israel Folau and speedster Jesse Mogg.

"I'll tell the new guys it's just another game of football, as big as it is," said Horwill.

"You got yourself here because you're good footballers so you've got to go out there and back yourself.

"Don't think twice and if you think something's on, have a dig because I'll never criticise you for having a go and having a crack and neither will Ewen.

"We've got to make sure that whatever we do, we don't do it half-hearted and go out full bore and make sure we enjoy it.

"It's enjoyable, you get that physical confrontation, the rivalry's been going for so long and these are the games you want to play.

"You love playing the All Blacks because at the moment they are the benchmark and we need to play as well as possible because we want to get our hands on that trophy.

"We need to make sure as a forward pack that we get as much ball to our backs as possible because we've got a very dangerous backline that can really do damage when they get clean ball.

"(Israel)'s a guy you want to get the ball because he makes things happen. He's got free rein to make sure he gets the ball as much as he wants."
