Rebels off to solid start

AAMI Park for Rebels v Force

The opener: Home win at AAMI Park

The Rebels got their Super Rugby season off to a strong start on Friday as they defeated the 30-23 in a come-from-behind success at AAMI Park.

Second-half yellow cards shown to Chris Alcock and Alby Mathewson saw Michael Foley's outfit struggle to halt the home side's resurgence.

The Force had been 0-11 ahead with half-an-hour played when Alfi Mafi crossed the whitewash following two penalties from Kyle Godwin.

However, the home side gradually fought their way back into matters and ultimately prevailed thanks to scores from Ged Robinson, Hugh Pyle and Richard Kingi, with James O'Connor kicking strongly off the tee with fifteen points to his name.

The match began with the underdog Force on the front foot and they fully deserved their early 0-6 lead when Godwin pushed them ahead after missing his first shot at goal. Those points came either side of Scott Higginbotham being sent to the sin-bin for an alleged punch on 22 minutes.

Foley's men were in great form and looked hungry to cause an upset in the campaign opener, a result that looked all the more likely when Mafi crossed wide on the left after good initial driving saw lock Sam Wykes held up over the line.

With 30 minutes gone at AAMI Park the Rebels looked slightly flat until one of their more consistent players from last season, Ged Robinson, sliced through a hole on halfway to spark something of a resurgence in the Melbourne camp.

Higginbotham was now back on the field when the Rebels won a line-out and then drove over the line, with the aforementioned hooker the last man up from the scoring move.

O'Connor's conversion was good to make it a four-point ball game on 34 minutes as the Rebels continued to dominate the latter stages of the opening half. They added to their tally before the break when the Wallaby back kicked a penalty that sent the teams in at 10-11.

The second-half continued as the first ended and with more pressure applied, the hosts took the lead for the first time in the game thanks to a well-worked try. It came from a lovely inside ball from Kingi, who had worked a one-two with Hugh Pyle before the lock carried over. O'Connor was again successful with his kick as the Rebels went 17-11 ahead.

The Force weren't done however and when a nice set-move off a scrum saw them go blind via Sam Christie and Winston Stanley, the space was created for Mafi to grab his brace. Unfortunately for the visitors though Godwin's kick was wide so they remained behind.

However, the Force saw their hopes of claiming victory suffer a major setback when first flanker Alcock and then former Blues scrum-half Mathewson were sent to the sin-bin.

That allowed the Rebels to take the game by the scruff of the neck and they moved 27-16 ahead when wing Kingi pounced on a long pass to score in the corner. O'Connor added the extra two before the Force admirably hit back through replacement Richard Brown's converted try, which set up a grandstand finish that the Rebels managed to see off.

Switched on to watch this game a bit late and thought Melbourne must have had it's first rain since November and it was washed out and they were replaying an old Kiwi NPC game. However it was actually two Aussie Super 15 sides, the depth Aussie rugby is building is simply breathtaking.

I was in the stand behind Mathiewson when he was sent off. From my perspective it was an inevitable and correct decision.

Referee A. Gardner made blunders in the first half and tried to even things out in the second half by being consistent. A very poor control of the game. Impressed with Rebel locks H. Pyle, L.Jones and C. Neville. J.O.Connor is just great. Rebels are stronger than last year and deserved to win. Force hooker N. Charles is fast coming to age. Very impressive.

Very good game of rugby, lets hope the rest of the season is filled with exciting ball running rugby and not a pommy or saffa kick a ton.

Thought it was a really good game 1st up. Applaud decisions to go for 7 points rather than 3 as a 1st option. Now if we can just keep the tight forwards out of the backline...i counted 7 times when the fatties lost the ball cold or spat it up in a tackle

Atrocious decision to sin bin Alby Mathiewson.

A few quick points. If you don't understand the ref, then go do a ref course or something similar. The sin bins were from the touchiest / asst refs who watched the things we didn't see on the camera. Oconnors hair I think was to raise money for autism. And the an opening match between two Aussie sides, it was quite open and entertaining. Watch you Godwin, he had a good game

Close game between two well matched teams.

A few non rugby issues though

Alby Mathewson is a cheat and got what he deserved for poor sportsmanship

Scott Higginbottam likewise is a cheap shot merchant and Reds are better of without players of that ilk

James O'Connor....baby sumo wrestler ??? In the words of George Thoroughgood 'get a hair cut and get a new job' , seriously mate that hair style is gay !!!

If yellow cards were removed or shortened, you'de have player flopping over the ball constantly when defending their 22/try line. And they would continue to do it because 5 mins or whatever, isn't really a deterrent to ill-discipline.

Refereeing decides the game again--let's look at Aussie Rules ---maybe they have it correct; award a penalty so the non offending team gets the chance to score points or relieve defensive pressure--if in ref's opinion it's what is now a yellow the ref also issues a white card to penalise the offender after the game (subject to an appeal process) he gets a hefty fine or misses a match or more. The current situation allows a ref to decide the game and possibly incorrectly (not saying the ref was correct or incorrect to issue yellows in this game) but 13 v 15 is ridiculous.

I know it is easy to attack the refs but the whole game was destroyed by Mr Gardner who sent two players off. These were dubious decisions at best but is underlining my absolute hatred of the 10 minute sin bin which has destroyed far too many good games of rugby at the behest of a touch judge (so-called assistant referee.... aye right!). 5 minutes maybe but 10 minutes is just wrong and can change the whole tenor of the game.

Incidentally: if the ref or assistant ref can send off a player for a mistake then I would like to know why there isn't a similar back up for the players and supporters. ie if the ref or assistant ref has made a proven stuff up they can be sent off for 10 minutes as well.... what's good for the goose......

Ref didn't help the game at all. Poor decisions. Should have been the WF's game really....

6 tries in the opening game. Thought it was a cracker of a game to get things undetway. Well done rebels. I don't think either of these sides will be walk overs. The Force did well considering all the Wallabies that are lined up for the rebels.

Turning point was just after half time when the force failed to score and 3 minutes later the rebels did. later, being down to 13 men certainly made it hard for the force.

Early season game -handling errors, gaping holes, not rolling away, flopping all over the ruck/tackle thingy. Ugh.
