Schalk Burger has been discharged from hospital and sent home to recuperate after being diagnosed with bacterial meningitis.

Bok flanker Schalk Burger has been discharged from hospital and sent home to recuperate after being diagnosed with bacterial meningitis.

Burger contracted the disease while in hospital following an operation to reduce pressure on a nerve in his calf.

The Stormers talisman was diagnosed with the potentially serious infection on March 27, but remained stable throughout his stay in hospital.

Burger's agent, Craig Livingstone, released a statement on the flank's behalf, thanking the hospital for their efforts.

"We would like to thank the specialists and hospital staff who have given Schalk excellent care," the statement said.

"Special thanks from Schalk and Michele to all the family, friends and fans who have sent overwhelming messages of support to the family over this time."

Burger has not played for the Stormers since injuring his knee over a year ago. He was due to return to Super Rugby this season for the Cape Town outfit, but hurt his calf ahead of the start of the campaign.
