Stormers v sharks preview 2012

Breakdown battle: Kolisi v Daniel

Only two teams have managed to beat the Stormers this year, but the Sharks will fancy their chances of doing it for a second time in Saturday's Super Rugby semi-final at Newlands.

History suggests that the odds are against the Durbanites winning consecutive knock-out games on the road, but after last week's stellar performance against the defending champions in Brisbane, John Plumtree's team have every reason to believe they can become the first visiting team to win in Cape Town in 2012. And the question marks hanging over the Stormers' attack will only fuel the Sharks' confidence.

Not since Jake White told the world the Boks didn't need a fetcher has a debate raged on at Planet Rugby like the one currently surrounding the Stormers' season. Is top spot in the standings a true reflection of the Stormers' credentials for the title? I, for one, am not convinced.

One faction in our international-inter-office feud has long insisted that the numbers speak for themselves: 14 wins in 16 games. Winning is all that counts, they argue, and Jean de Villiers' boys have done plenty of it.

Those stats are truly impressive, yet the Stormers' record against the other three semi-finalists is far less so. They did not play the Chiefs this year and lost to Crusaders. A very late penalty was required to scrape past the Sharks at Newlands and they needed an intercept try and then a late consolation score from Gio Aplon to save a losing bonus point in Durban.

The Capetonians' inability to score more than three tries in a match all season has been well documented and while fans in Cape Town will point to their side's brilliant defensive record, unconvincing performances in their last two home games - when they struggled to overcome the lowly Lions and Rebels - only served to highlight the apparent limitations of their attacking game.

Pessimists will suggest that grinding out results week in and week out might be enough to earn a semi-final berth, but to win a spot in a final you must be able to step it up a gear and knock out a top team. This time last year, the Stormers failed to find that elusive extra gear against the Crusaders... and we all know how that ended.

Ok, enough Stormers bashing. Finishing top of the overall standings demands respect. Some might even go so far as to say their defence-oriented style suits 'finals' rugby. Indeed, the fact that a plethora of back-row injuries didn't halt their march to the South African conference crown underlines the strength of the Stormers' structures. They keep the error count low, which is always the most important part of winning an elimination match.

The Sharks have not tasted victory at Newlands since 2009 and their cross-continental travelling schedule over the last fortnight will count heavily against them. While Plumtree insists "it's not unknown territory for us, we know what it feels like to be a bit jet-lagged, you do improve as the week goes on", it's hard to imagine changing 16 times zones in under two weeks will have no effect on bodies already worn out by a long season.

Any neutral South African fan will surely be cheering for the men in blue stripes because the Sharks will have little chance of winning a final in New Zealand after yet another long-haul flight. But we're getting ahead of ourselves - any premature thoughts of the final will spell disaster for either side.

While the Stormers have certainly developed a winning habit this season, considering the results of the past month and the Stormers bye week - which can often play havoc with a side's rhythm - the Sharks are probably carrying more momentum. If they can burst out of the blocks the way they did against the Reds, it'll be interesting to see if the Stormers are able to wrestle back control.

Both coaches have highlighted the importance of the set piece and while the Sharks will aim to build on the go-forward ball generated by their monster pack, the Stormers will expect to dominate at line-out time.

On paper there is very little to pick between the sides and, as is always the case in South African derbies, the collisions will be brutal. Don't bet your house on this one, it could go either way.

Players to watch:

For the Stormers: Just like his team's track record this year, Peter Grant is at the centre of wide-spread debate. While elements of the press in Cape Town are calling for the pivot to be handed the Springbok 10 jersey, others are suggesting that his combination with Dewaldt Duvenage is at the origin of the Stormers' stale attack. Whatever side of the fence you prefer, no one can deny that Bash has made very few mistakes and has been in devastating form from the kicking tee, slotting 45 from 48 attempts at goal this season - a very impressive 94 per cent success rate. He's a class player and his contribution with both his hands and feet will be vital to the result. Also keep an eye on hooker cum number eight Deon Fourie, who has been a revelation in his new role. But his loose forward credentials will be given their toughest test yet against one of South Africa's form players at the moment, Ryan Kankowski.

For the Sharks: Veteran French international Frederic Michalak could be playing his last game for the Sharks. "He's pivotal to our game," said Plumtree earlier this week. "He's a big game player who loves the big occasions; the bigger the occasion, the more he loves them and they don't get much better than the knock-outs we're involved in now. We give him a lot of responsibility as to how we want to play the game, and he's going really well." Enough said. Perhaps even more crucial to the Sharks' game will be their principal source of front-foot ball, Springbok flank Willem Alberts, who starts at lock. The Stormers second row is one of the best in the competition so Alberts will have to produce another big performance to justify Plumtree's decision start with four loose forwards.

Head to head: The Sharks thrive on the platform provided by their pack busting over the gain line with Marcell Coetzee and Keegan Daniel key to backing up the raging bull that is Bismarck du Plessis. Their battle at the breakdown with Rynhardt Elstadt and Siya Kolisi could hold the key to the outcome. As much as Alberts' place in the Sharks second row is an illustration of the Sharks' tactic of running off big ball carriers, Elstadt's inclusion in the Stormers loose trio points to their desire to dominate in the air and in the tight stuff. A new generation of loosies has emerged in South Africa, who will rule on Saturday?

Previous results:

2012: Sharks won 25-20 in Durban
2012: Stormers won 15-12 in Cape Town
2011: Stormers won 32-12 in Cape Town
2011: Stormers won 16-6 in Durban
2010: Sharks won 20-14 in Durban
2009: Sharks won 20-15 in Cape Town
2008: Sharks won 12-10 in Durban
2007: Sharks won 36-10 in Cape Town
2006: Sharks won 24-17 in Durban
2005: Stormers won 26-12 in Cape Town

Prediction: This is first ever Super Rugby knock-out match between these sides. There have been 32 semi-finals since 1996 and the home team has lost only five times. However, this has happened twice to the Stormers (in 1999 against the Highlanders and in 2011 against the Crusaders). The Sharks are one of only four teams in the history of the competition to have won a semi-final on the road - in 1996 against the Reds. If the Sharks get an early lead - the way they did in the regular season game in Durban and against the Reds a week ago - we reckon they have the self belief to extinguish whatever the Stormers have to fire back with. Sharks by four!

JayStarr:

"beat the Reds convincingly at Suncorp, with Quade Cooper in the team"

Which dream was that ? Cooper didn't play in that game, neither did Ioane and both Ant and Saia Faingia to name a few. It was Sam Lane at 10 who got injured after 2 minutes and a couple of minutes later centre Tapuai.

Remember last year in Kip Town ? Reds won and still had Injures then !

But keep it in your head that you beat a full strength side if it helps.

If the Sharks win tonight, it'll be an extraordinary feat.

Has any Super12, 14 or 15 team travelled halfway across the globe twice and won twice before? I can't recall this happening before, so 3 times in 3 weeks would be a miracle.

Something tells me irrespective that like the Chiefs / Crusaders this is going to be a blockbuster event.

Would,ve loved to see Steyn-de Villiers clash in this one. Also unfortunate for Lambie.

Prediction: Bok skipper to rally his troops for a home final.

This should be a cracker. The top team over the comp vs currently the most in form team! I am a complete neutral on this, but here's hoping for a Sharks victory, for no other reason than a home final in Hamilton next week!

(Trinats4 - man, you really have turned in to a bitter little girl since your Reds got smacked. Cheer up mate, you're usually much more fun)

JayStarr says...

Just put yourselves in the Sharks position for a moment...

You've had all the pre-match motivation and self-belief talk... You've started the game with all hellfire and brimstone you could mustre, yet at half time it's still close... So you come out after half-time knowing that you score most of your tries then and give the Stormers hell... But their defense holds... And eventually they get the ball and start giving you hell back... Forcing you to defend... And about 15 minutes into the 2nd half you start getting that weak feeling... That jetlagged feeling you got in the Reds game the last week when you also started defending... Only this time it's twice as bad... And the well-rested Stormers don't seem to be tiring... They just keep coming at you... Andries Bekker, Eben Etzebeth, Rynhardt Elstadt, Tiaan Liebenberg, Steven Kitschoff, Jean de Villiers ferociously bashing away at you... Gio Aplon, Joe Pietersen, Juan de Jongh and Bryan Habana testing your sharpness... You're defending for your life, but you're just feeling weaker and weaker as the time ticks on... The jet lag is overwhelming... It feels like you've got ankle and wrist weights on... You need something to lift you... to motivate you... But what do you get if you win this game? You have to get on a plane and fly all the way back to New Zealand to go play the Chiefs, where it will be biologically impossible for you to win... only to fly all the way back again directly after that game.

That is NOT motivation. And that is why the Sharks will lose.

JayStarr says...

Yes, please stop your Stormers bashing. Last year we went down to our 5th fly-half and this year we are down to our 11th "loose forward"... Please tell me how many other teams have suffered such losses in these key positions and still made the semi-finals... nevermind top the table?

Also, that loss to the Crusaders in Christchurch could've easily gone the other way. You also seem to conveniently forget how brilliantly the Stormers played against the in-form Highlanders the week before, after flying accross the Indian ocean, Australia and the length of New Zealand... And how they also beat the Reds convincingly at Suncorp, with Quade Cooper in the team... Or how they beat the Bulls at Loftus with a seriously depleted squad... THAT is why they are top of the table - because they won the difficult games too.

After flying accross the Indian Ocean and Australia twice in 2 weeks, the Sharks need to start well if they want to win on Saturday. However, one of the things the Stormers have done really well this year is start well. The Stormers will also inevitably have more energy than the Sharks in the last 20 minutes. The Stormers also have (by far) the best defense in the competition: they have only given away 21 tries in 16 games (that's not even 1 and a half tries per game) - the next best is the Chiefs with 30 (33% more). Peter Grant also has the best goal kicking percentage of any kicker: 45 out of 46 kicks (that's 98%). The Stormers also have one of the lowest penalty counts in the competition...

So please explain to me how the Sharks are going to breach the Stormers' defense so many times that the Stormers (who are playing at home) can't come back in the last 20 minutes, while at the same time staying out of their own half and not giving away any penalties? Because that's the only way they can win... Which is what you predicted them to do.

seaninhalf boet, I am a sharks supporter, and cannot see us progressing to lifting that cup even if we beat your Stormers. I really want a South African team to win this and really hope that if we do loose, that you score some tries...Best defence in the league YES but that, as seen in previous super rugby seasons, doesn't mean anything without and equally good attack. I understand that statistics mean nothing to an individual unit, because on their day the Stormers can outclass anyone who steps on the same rugby field - especially with that back line, I just hope is an open game so we see some real running rugby from the franchises best performing conference! All the best. Come on SHARKKKSSSS

@pikes

The irony is they topped the log and had a week off but still the predictions is against them. The sharks won the reds because they lost their playmakers and had bad combination because of injuries...The stormers will win against the sharks...

Stormers to win. It's a home semi final, we have most of our big guns back and we really should win this. I'm not sure about winning the final, but hope springs eternal! Our defense (throughout) has legendary status; Peter Grant's kicks have been the most consistent of any kicker this season (I think he's only missed 3 out of almost 50??). These 2 sides are the most equal - Bulls were terrible this year - Steyn hasn't been able to kick to love nor money and their defense has been abysmal. 2 of the games the Bulls won, they gifted the losing side with 2 bonus points! Who does that?? Sharks, I am very glad that we have you guys in the semi final. Going to be an absolute cracker! Can't wait! STORMERS!!!!!!!!!

kappelange if the Stomers do prevail tomorrow, then your attributes summary for a Stormer vs Chiefs should read defense vs great attack & great defense, were you not watching the match today, Anyhow my monies on the Sharks tomorrow..

Stormers are in trouble at the mo, you could forgive having problems beating the woodenspooners once, but twice in a row speaks for itself (I am a neutral punter)

Were The Chiefs really great in SA earlier in the comp? They beat the Lions by 7, Cheetahs by 6 and a Beastless Sharks by 6. I think that if they have to come to CT in a final then they will struggle. Traditionally a strong champions Saders tour would destroy all before them, the Chiefs were not the same. I'm glad to see the back of the Crusaders. The Sharks could stay in contention in NZ or The Stormers can win in CT. I thin kthat SA have the advantage.

A Sharks win would be great, however IMHO the Stormers are a formidable outfit it is with reason that they topped the Super15 chart. I also believe that if needed the Stormers have an ability to score tries; the same side, coached by the same coach changing this much without having an ability to respond with running rugby as it did in the past is an anomaly - no professional ever loses their basic skills they only adapt to what is needed to be more effective.

Stormers to win.

Sharks by 10. They are on fire and nothing can stop them at the moment not even time zones or Welsh. The key is they are playing as a team and not individuals. Someone has make them believe. Go Sharks

Kappekange: the point you miss is that the sharks will be at a HUGE disadvantage (so much so that I think they have no chance) having travelled so much by the time they get to the final. So it won't be a true "match up" at all. Just a gift to NZ rugby. For the sake of SA rugby, the stormers MUST win on Sat.

Come on a final between Stormer and Chiefs will be awesome, great attack vs great defense, best of SA vs best of NZ, two teams that have a small back three and powerful centres, inexperienced forward packs yet underrated, both teams produced an international second rower in his first season.

They didnt even play eachother this season. You cant ask for a more even matchup than this.
