Sharks snap up Kings' Marais

On the move: SP Marais

Southern Kings full-back SP Marais has joined the Sharks on the back of the Eastern Cape franchise's relegation from Super Rugby.

The 24-year-old was a solid performer for the Kings during their maiden season, but like many of his team-mates has moved on from franchise.

The Sharks get their Currie Cup campaign underway on Friday night against Griquas, but Marais is unlikely to feature as the Sharks are still waiting for clearance from the Kings.

"SP Marais is a new recruit from the Kings, subject to release from them, we're hoping soon as possible," Sharks director of rugby Brendan Venter explained to the team's official website.

"SP is coming in as a squad member, not to start as a fullback. When losing Riaan Viljoen and there is a good chance we're losing Louis Ludik as well, losing both fullbacks, we needed to strengthen our squad at fullback.

"He's a good addition because he can play a couple of positions, it's a long term investment for SP to be at a top union like The Sharks, it's a great step up for him as well."

Prior to playing for the Kings, Marais turned out for the Leopards and Boland at Currie Cup level.
